    I learned how to harvest the seeds. ❣ This was certainly helpful. ❣ 💕 💚 *thanks,* Scarlett. _I have a "watchman" holyhock plant (dark maroon/ almost black)._ 😊 💜

    I got hollyhock seed to plant this year. This was a HUGE help to me! I've never planted, or know anybody that has planted, hollyhocks before. I didn't realize that they won't flower this year!!! Good thing I saw this video. I would have been super disappointed & wondered what the heck I did wrong. I bought the black variety. AND, I didn't know to cut back these & peonies either. Once I decide what to plant, I'm going to go back through your videos before planting anything. Love your homestead, rock borders around the beds, and your goats! Hugs from FL!

      Hi J. yes, plant then this year, as many as you can and next year you'll have a beautiful display of flowers everywhere. I continue to plant hollyhocks every year in new places at my home and my friends homes. Young hollyhock leaves are edible and the leaves can be used to make a soothing demulcent poultice while the petals make a lovely diuretic red tea.

    I thought the seeds need light to germinate? When I figured that out I now have a hollyhock forest in my garden.

    Quick question, you mentioned cutting peony bushes pretty low to the ground. Do you have a recommendation about when to cut those down? Or is it just in the fall when everything winds down anyway?

    • @HowToGrowAGarden
      @HowToGrowAGarden  3 года назад

      Yep. Any time in the fall is good. Or if it develops powdery mildew.

    I got a question. Maybe it was already answered below. I was mailed a bag of last years seeds. They were inside sense last year. Would they still grow or do they have to be left outside all season ?

      @HowToGrowAGarden  2 года назад +1

      I suggest starting a few seeds in pots and seeing how they do. They should sprout in a few weeks.
      But yes they should still grow depending on how you kept them. You can also start your seeds right in the garden beds and in 2 years you’ll have beautiful hollyhocks.

    My brother gave me a whole bag of hollyhock seeds last spring from his garden that he had collected a couple years ago. I planted all of them and never got a single plant. Are the seeds only good for a year? Maybe he picked them when they were green? I was so bummed! They sure are gorgeous

    • @HowToGrowAGarden
      @HowToGrowAGarden  4 года назад +1

      start with a small seed pack from the grocery store, plant them now and start them indoors. this will give you a head start. keep then happy and next year you will have millions of seeds to collect and plant again. It only takes not plant to make a lot more. But don't pick the seeds until they're brown.
      As for the seeds your brother gave you, you can start them on a blotter ( wet paper towel) and see if you have any success if they sprout, pot them up and treat them like any other seedling.

      Hollyhocks will grow in zones 2 through 9 but they like a lot of water. they do grow in Arizona
