I saw the video on Two Ideas on Marxism. There are mistakes in Viswanathan Cvn's arguments. I would like to make a few rebuttals here. The following are my points: There are a few labour theories of value. Marx's labour theory of value is one among them. The uniqueness of this theory is that it establishes the fact that there is a surplus value component in the value of a commodity (i.e, Value of a commodity = Constant Capital + Variable Capital + Surplus Value). There is another school of thought named as Neo-Classical School (of which Marshell was a member) which argues that value of a commodity is determined by its utility (want satisfying capacity). This theory argues that value/price of a commodity is determined by its demand and supply. Here it is assumed that people demand goods and services because of its utility. Hence, the value of a good is determined by its utility. Now, remember that these two traditions are two different theoretical approaches to understand the economic processies in the society. Now here are my points: A) When Marx uses the terms demand, it simply means availability of goods/services. However, Marshellian demand has a different meaning. His concept of demand is derived from utility (of goods/services). Hence, you cannot take Marshellian demand and apply it in Marxian schema. B) I can establish the point A more concretely. Marxism falls under the theoretical tradition known as Dialectics. However, Marshell's analysis falls under the empiricist theoretical tradition.So analytical categories used in these theoretical traditions have unique meanings in each of these theories. So Marshell's demand is not equal to demand in Marx's theory. One cannot be so superficial in understanding/ criticizing towering intellectuals like Karl Marx. :) By sreraj AP
