- The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, NPR Music presents four very special Tiny Desk Home Concerts recorded especially for this week. This video from global superstar Ozuna is a world premiere.
Oct. 16, 2020 | Stefanie Fernández -- From a verdant room tucked away in Miami, Ozuna's Tiny Desk performance might allow you, as it did me, to forget for a moment that he's one of the most watched and listened-to artists on earth. For someone whose work often operates at galactic proportions, this performance of five songs makes room for Ozuna's sweet tenor to take center-desk in a love letter to the global communities that supported and streamed him to god tier status.
The Puerto Rican singer kicks it off with a breezy rendition of "Caramelo" that leads into a solo version of the sun-drenched "Del Mar" from ENOC, his fourth album that he's deemed a return to his roots. This pared-down performance makes good on that promise, reworking star-studded collaborations, like the ballad "Despeinada," as they should be sung: languorously and with intimacy. Even the pop smash "Taki Taki" sounds brand new, buoyed by his alchemical flow and energy.
Ozuna is a crown jewel in the global crest of Latin pop, a movement whose modern success in reggaeton and Latin trap is indebted to the Caribbean genres Ozuna heard growing up in Puerto Rico, sounds like old-school reggaeton and reggae en español, dembow, dancehall and more. From then to now, Ozuna's bare talent remains his greatest asset. It's rare to see a star of his magnitude brush the earth so closely, and when it does, it's even rarer for it to feel and sound like second nature.

Hace la voz alta fake del melodyne bien ozuna. Le queda igual.
La voz del otro chico no se parece en nada a la de Ozuna en nada. Pero hacen el complemento perfecto y tiene una afinación y una voz on point “espectacular”. Y en cuento al ozu lo he escuchado ensayando sin autotune y para mi es uno de los mejores artistas urbanos de su generación.
El genero en formato de instrumental en vivo suena mucho mejor de lo que pensé, les ha quedado excelente a todos!

This is one of the best TinyDesk concerts PERIOD
I’m gonna just say it: “This looks like a music video!” The vibe is nice, but with all of the earpieces and production it takes away from the rawness of the OG Tiny Desk sessions. With all that said...I LOVE THE MUSIC! Definitely made me want to get up and dance! I’m a fan.

Definitely check out some of the other Latin groups they've had in the last 4 or 5 years, they've got a fair few groups who have graced the desk. They've always had a pretty good level of representation of Latin music on this channel. Well, "pretty good" is subjective but a search for "Latin Tiny Desk" will give you some sweet music.

Creo q el elitismo musical se da en un movimiento contrario a lo que acá se argumenta. Este género y estos artistas tienen copado y monopolizado casi todas las grandes plataformas de difusión musical y si lo analizamos detenidamente uno se da cuenta que muchos cantantes y músicos muy talentosos se les niega la posibilidad de difundir su música. Eso para nadie es un secreto, así funciona la industria de la música. Entonces porque uno de los pocos espacios como tyni desk que se caracteriza por proyectar a grandes artistas que no tiene mucho reconocimiento decide darle más voz y protagonismo a los que ya lo tienen? Y que si uno es sincero, tampoco es que resalten por sus virtudes liricistas o musicales....
Pará mí el elitismo y la exclusividad,como dije se da en sentido contrario.

Lo mismo pasa con cada género, ese "elitismo" que hablas (y esta en cada género) va escoger lo que le va generar ingresos, obviamente. Para los que no son tan populares, pues hay otras disqueras. En la vida no importa tu talento, la calidad, etc; simplemente debe pegar, esto va para bandas como Queen, The Beatles, Elton John, Anuel A, Panic at the disco, etc; hay otras bandas que se esfuerzan más y bueno, la gente debe entender también que tu "esfuerzo" no sirve si a nadie le gusta o no pega mucho ("pegarle a caballo muerto") . ¿Alguna banda merece reconocimiento? pues eso es demasiado subjetivo y siendo sincero, ninguna banda merece una suma exagerada de millones de millones como ciertas bandas de pseudointelectuales ni otras que tienen más hate. La música es para escuchar. Tu queja nunca parara porque no se puede esperar que varias personas hagan popular justo a lo que a uno le parece que debería ser reconocido constantemente.
@@markengelbert30 creo q el fondo del asunto, que es el mismo que yo plantee, tu muy bien lo reseñaste: la música, los géneros musicales y los artistas que representan cada movimiento, se posicionan en el mercado global en tanto cumplan con los estándares populares del momento, es decir, que sean capaces de producir hits que evidentemente representan pilas de dinero para las productoras y discográficas.
Eso es innegable, como también es incuestionable que este principio, por si solo baste para decir que, en términos de Calidad, un género, cantante o música es de muy mala calidad. Mainstrein nunca va ser equiparable con basura.
Lo que yo cuestionó es el hecho de que la plataforma Tiny Desk haga eco de un género y artistas musicales que ya tienen bastantes espacios difusion y reconocimiento a nivel mundial, cuando se sabe que si algo ha caracterizado, desde el año 2011 a los Tiny de NPR, es que se ponen la palestra a artistas que no tienen mucha recepción popular y que están haciendo (o hicieron) cosas increíblemente buenas e interesantes. Muy a menudo solo se cumple la última condición. Ejemplos muchos, Outkast, que es Anderson Paak, Tyler de creator, etc.
Ozuna, más allá de ser un rockstar que pertenece a un género hiper popular, en términos de CALIDAD no tiene mucho que mostrarnos que sea diferente a lo que estamos habituados.
@@markengelbert30 el tema del reconocimiento musical no se corresponde, necesariamente al número de reproducciones que obtenga uNA canción O A los millones de dólares que genere. Y no es que crea que cantantes de la escena underground (por el simple hecho de ser underground) se les deba prestar más atención porque en estos nichos si o si se hace música transgresora, interesante o de calidad. Esto no funciona de esa manera. Sin embargo si considero que muchos de estos artistas se pierden o se esconden detrás de los eclipses que son y representan los cantantes mainstrein y que espacios como Tyni desk ayude a que sepamos de ellos me parece valioso. Ozuna queda muy dislocado en esta cuestión.
Yo tengo una lista personal de artistas que nunca fallan y Ozuna es uno de ellos. He escuchado esto más de 50 veces. Excelente trabajo del corista y por supuesto la banda.💪🔥

Tiny desk es tan perfecto, que hizo que me guste Ozuna.
Concuerdo en que hay varios temas del género que tienen letras simplonas. ¿Pero por qué el reggaeton no sería musicalmente bueno? ¿Porque tiene un patrón rítmico que se repite en sus canciones? Bueno, en muchos géneros latinos (que dicho sea de paso tienen muchas influencias indígenas y africanas) pasa algo similar. Tumbao, cha cha cha, samba... la lista es inacabable. Es cosa de escuchar algunos temas que son increíbles, como "La Sensación del Bloque" de Randy y De La Ghetto: tiene un juego de voces genial, construyen súper bien las dinámicas, tiene una letra bonita (bastante respetuosa diría yo), tiene un gran feel... "Mayor Que Yo" tiene influencia directa del merengue, por ejemplo. Y pasando al reggaeton reciente, "Esto no es una Canción de Amor" debe ser la canción de amor más linda que he escuchado en los últimos dos años.
¿Finalmente qué es la buena música?¿ La que tiene una letra más profunda?, ¿la que tiene más variaciones rítmicas?, ¿la que tiene armonías más complejas? Es un debate sin fin. Lo que sí tengo claro, es que la música, muchas veces antes de entenderse en la cabeza, se siente en el cuerpo. Y canciones como la que digo me hacen moverme y disfrutar.

Ozuna estás a otro nivel, la mejor apuesta que hiciste fue proponer siempre full la banda para interpretar Reggaetón, un resultante fino y armónico total. Nada se le compara al trabajo grupal, arreglos en vivo, timbres, etc. que este formato te permite, así como por igual, el tremendo distintivo que te distingue de los demás por ello! Entre ir a un concierto de un artista con bases a uno con toda esta maravilla de trabajo, no hay por donde perderse en lo absoluto... Simplemente, el reggaetón con banda y arreglos en vivo es OTRA COSA! Grandes Ozuna y banda, que sonido más fino 🙌🏼🎵🔥

I would love to see the R&B singers Fer Casillas (Mexico) and Chita (Argentina) on the Tiny Desk. Also, the talented Colombian group ChocQuibtown. They're also great latin artists.

The amazing thing about good music is that even if you dont speak any language fluently, it speaks for itself. And the more you listen, the more you will eventually understand....we are so blessed to have so many talented artists from so many places....love tiny desk 4 sure
