- Hi everyone!! Is 2023 literally evaporating into the annals of history in record time for anyone else, or is it just me? How the heck is it December already??
ok so you might be wondering, "WHY, when piano god Yui Morishita just recently released his magnificent solo piano arrangement of Corridors on the SQEX Music Channel, is Purpleschala even bothering with her outlandishly amateur version" which is honestly an excellent question I keep asking myself 😭 Well, I'll tell you (myself lol) why. It's been a decade or so since I last recorded this, and it was absolute garbage. It's been lowkey at the back of my mind to revisit and redo literally all of my Chrono stuff, which I started with Scars of Time last year, and one I'll be pursuing more actively in the coming year, so there's going to be the oddball Chrono track cropping up here and there. (And while I'm at it, if I'm not working on Legend of Mana stuff next year, someone come over and bonk me on the head please)
This is (mostly) the famous Zohar arrangement, which I reworked the first time I recorded this years ago to suit my own tastes. I decided to keep my improvised ending with some very minor tweaks, and added in Zohar's little arpeggio during one iteration, plus some other little additions and tiny little reharmonizations, but otherwise it's pretty intact. Though upon listening to my recording I don't know why I didn't take the melody into the midrange like Morishita did--I had TOTALLY set up that interlude in the repeat for it, and I TOTALLY didn't do it!!!!! 😭 well Morishita's completely to blame for not coming out with his version BEFORE i started relearning this and heard what an awesome job he did in retaining the original registers of original lines lmao (melody is supposed to go into the mids, and that accompanying ostinato into the treble).
In any case, Zohar's contribution and mysteriously sudden disappearance from the vgm piano scene in early 2000 is now the stuff of legends. Their Chrono Trigger piano arrangements were some of the first widely distributed arrangements of this caliber done by seemingly a random, very talented fan--FF Piano Collections was just starting to reach awareness in the West, since the internet was still in its infancy, and the quality and artistry of these Zohar Chrono Trigger arrangements set such a high bar for what vgm piano arrangements could be. We owe a lot to Zohar, whoever and wherever they are. ❤️
Relearning this was rather painful, but easier this time around since I completely redid the score notation condensing it into two staves instead of three, because I'll be damned if I'm reading three staves for anything other than Prokofiev 2 lol. Pedaling was probably the trickiest part of this, trying to maintain the legato of the melody line but the rhythmic clipped articulation of the ostinato and bass. I did half pedal throughout as a compromise. The lovely thing about this one is that when you get it pretty well under your fingers, it's rather hypnotic and almost therapeutic hahaha.
Anyways I hope you all don't mind me revisiting my back catalog, I had to re-record this one for me, and I hope you all like the new version! This really has got to be one of the best video game songs ever composed, hasn't it? I will never forget the way it felt to get to the Eternal Kingdom of Zeal for the first time. It was one of the best moments I'd ever had in gaming, and it was due in large part to this song. This rendition of it is so awesome! Your work is consistently superb, and you sound like you have at least three hands in this piece. Way to go Schala!
OHHHHH MAN I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU MEAN!!! You summed up my feelings perfectly when I first stepped off that transporter and heard the intro to this song, then saw all those floating islands and waterfalls, and knew this place was going to be my favorite in the game, too bad it ended up being like...the most ethically wayward place in the game 😭but YES that moment first getting to Enhasa...oh man. I'll never forget it. Thank you so much for the kind words, I'm so glad you like this new version! :)

@@purpleschala And the way that you have to go through the desolate, unforgiving stretches of snow, devoid of music, before you get to this cave that takes you to Zeal, that's just so brilliant.

Another arrangement that pulls my nostalgia to the surface. It's hard to believe this game is almost 30 years old. The impact it left on you is clear in the passion coming through in your performance.

Like the true Zohar (The Conduit), the artist only shows up when we need them, and then, the Zohar mysteriously disappears. It is quite the Xeno tragedy.

regarding Zohar, he actually came back two years ago or so to post two Disney arrangements and then disappeared again - so he is somewhere out there making music, but for some mysterious reason is not interested in a larger online presence it seems.

Morishita's arrangement and performance was incredible and so impressive. I would still sign up to listen to a Schala recording of it any day of the week though. I just feel more of a sincere emotional tone when you play this piece and get a bit of the sense of what it must have meant to you to hear this song and explore Zeal. And that kind of relatable feeling is worth a lot. Plus, I mean... you ARE Schala after all, so if you wanted to re-record and upload this song every year, I'd be 100% okay with that ;)

AND YES PLEASE DO CHECK OUT MORISHITA'S RENDITION!!!!!! it's PHENOMENAL i was crying fffffffffff they're really doing God's work on the SQEX music channel. Literally the best decision Square has made in recent memory was starting that channel and getting all these top notch musicians to do these fresh new renditions of all their most beloved themes!

OMG SAME!! There were only three save slots and one of them I always kept at the part in the game when you reach Enhasa for the first time, just so I could listen to Corridors on loop for hours. EDIT: wanna add that your chops are really friggin good here. i have been playing guitar, self taught, for about 20 years, and i don't know my music terminology terribly well. but there's this thing you do that i really enjoy that guitar players also do, but i don't know the name of it. it's basically the opposite of attack i think (perhaps staccato? tried googling around for it). the way you abruptly end the high notes that ring the main melody in at around 0:18 in contrast to letting most of them ring out prior (and directly after) caught me off guard in a really good way. kinda like a hook in a good narrative. tl;dr good shit, love your work.

One of my all time favorites in VGM. I remember when I shared the song with my brother a some years back, he was awed by the beauty of the piece, and he learned the Zohar arrangement. I loved hearing him practice in the house at the time. I played through Chrono Trigger last year or 2, and arriving in the Kingdom of Zeal with this music going had my smiling ear to ear. It really is an incredible piece.
ahhhh that's such a special memory, hearing your brother practice the Zohar arrangement!!!! ❤️ sometimes I wonder if my family will feel the same about my practicing in the future hahaha it's more of an annoyance to them right now lmaoooo. Zeal is my favorite part of the game and just hearing this song was 99% the reason why, it's such a landmark moment!

Corridors of Time and Dancing Mad are my 2 favorite vgm songs. Dancing Mad is chaotic and full of craziness...and then there's this. Just an absolute emotional tour de force. I've used different variations of Corridors of Time as my ringtone for over a decade. Everybody in my life who has no clue what Chrono Trigger is knows this song because of me lol.
Thank you Schala for covering this song. I always love hearing your takes on songs i love, because you always put your entirety into your music, and make it your own.

He's the only one who adapted Mathew Valente's remix of Corridors for the ill-fated Chrono Resurrection project all those years ago, with the guitar, and it's fantastic! I'm actually adapting Valente's remix of Schala's Theme for my new version of Schala!! =) Thanks so much for listening and for all the encouraging words, I really enjoy your reading your comments!! OH! And I don't know if you play Another Eden, but there's an Octopath 2 crossover event for that now and I'm reinstalling the game and PRAYING they still have my save file unlike COTC lol!!!
@@purpleschala I've heard of Another Eden but only after CotC launched, so unfortunately never got to try it. And yeah, Verdegrand's take on the 2 remixes he chopped up and pulled out that masterpiece just melts me whenever I relisten
