In the first story, what was the guy thinking saying he does not accept your resignation? That he was going to somehow force you to continue to volunteer? 🤣

If this wasn't a non-profit there'd at least be a somewhat stupid but logical excuse to it- by getting an employee to quit instead of firing them, they may be able to avoid some grievances like demands for work comp and so on (depending on how crappy the job is). With this being non-profit it's absolutely insane and has like... no sense. What are they gonna do, stiff you on unemployment, you weren't paying em to start with!

"You're not allowed to quit volunteering"
That's called slavery. And it's illegal in most parts of the world.

when I was a teen the teacher said this "if you dont want just leave". I was really nerd, top A student, but he was so rude that me and a couple of people just got up and start walking to the door. He asked what we were doing and we said "leaving as you said". But here in my country the school is responsible for the minors and he actualy couldnt dismiss us. So he had to swalow his pride and tell us to stay. He tried to remain as "I give the orders here" but he learned to never do this kind of bull crap with teenagers.

I went to a Christian girls camp that was sort of neutral on LGBT+ issues, like neither condemning nor affirming but sort of a don't ask/don't tell situation (which is actually pretty progressive for a Christian organization). The camp was acquired by new management who decided that LGBT+ staff would no longer be allowed in leadership roles (such as counselors) Well, it turned out A LOT of the staff was queer. They all left, and many other staff members left in solidarity with them. The camp ended up shutting down after having been there for over 50 years. They fucked around and found out!
In the second story it sounds like the substitute was traumatized and scared after Columbine happened and wasn't processing it well.

My previous job was like this. My boss was a holy terror who micromanaged everything, if you didn’t do something the way he wanted he’d yell at you. I had to put up with this and other similar behaviour for 8 months before I’d had enough and I quit. Good thing too as I went past his business about six months later and it’s gone, he went out of business. Best petty glee I’ve ever felt.

When I was in high school, I got a job at McDonald’s one summer. After I had been there for about a month, someone who I’d never seen before, didn’t introduce themselves, and wasn’t wearing a uniform or name tag, tells me from the lobby that I need to shave to work here. I hadn’t shaved that morning and was a little scruffy, so I just said “okay” and went back to work. The next week, the same guy came in, and it turned out he was an area manager. He saw me, and said “I thought I told you, you had to shave.”
“Well, you did, although I didn’t know who you were or that it was an order. But you were right, I hadn’t shaved that morning, so I’ve been making sure to do so before every shift.”
“No. I meant clean-shaven. You need to shave off your mustache and goatee.”
(Again: high school, my goatee had only recently filled-in, and this was a minimum wage job)
“Well, I had them when I was hired ,and that wasn’t a condition of my employment. I wouldn’t have taken the job if it were.”
“Well it is now. Go home and don’t come back until you shave them off.”
It was the lunch rush. I was the only person on the line assembling food, and I never came back.

7 months ago I was told by my wife of 20 years "If you dont like it , theres the door..." This was her way of ending discussions she didnt want to have and she was using this 'out' more and more to end all sorts of discussions. It became her fallback to the point that she was using it for very trivial things. I warned her a couple months previous to this that she should be careful about saying this as the more she used this 'out' the better the door started looking because she was using it to silence my opinions in the marriage. For reference our children are raised, the youngest being 19 yrs old. Long story short she was having a bad saturday morning (as usual) and thought she was going to take it out on me first thing in the morning, and of course it ended in "if you dont like the way I act, then theres the door" . That was the last time she was going to do that to me. I looked out in the drive to see I was parked in , but knew she would be leaving in an hour, so I went to the garden and straightened things up there until she left. I put some essential things in my car and drove to my sister's place. We live in a no fault divorce state where marital assets get split 50/50. So when we spoke I tried to tell her either she would have to buy me out if she wanted to keep the house, so we could either decide on an amicable split and use the same attorney, or waste a bunch of money getting separate lawyers battling back and forth. She chose the waste money option and filed for divorce . So 6 months later the court has ruled she can either buy out my half of the equity in the home or it gets sold.. Exactly what I told her was going to happen. So here I sit, just bought a new home jointly with my sister (As advised by my lawyer so the soon to be ex cant touch it). Happy as hell to be out of that situation, just waiting to see whether the ex can afford to buy me out , or whether we have to put the marital home up for sale. BEST decision I ever made was to take her advice and see myself to the door . I should have done it years sooner but stayed to get the youngest through high school. Over the years she became comfortable using this threat as she knew I didn't want to disturb the kids' home life. So she used that to keep me under her thumb.. Once there was no threat of kids being involved in a divorce , there was no thumb on me, and I was there by CHOICE , not obligation. I chose freedom , and piece of mind. She on the other hand is telling everybody I am a money hungry good for nothing etc. because I wont just walk away and give her the house. I have a TON of "sweat equity" in that place on top of the monetary equity. Bought it 8 yrs ago for $79,500.00 , just appraised out at $185,000.00 and we owe 65k on it so she honestly expected me to just walk away from $60,000 in equity(my 50% of the 120k in equity).. Don't force people to choose if you aren't prepared for the consequences of that choice.

Old crappy warehouse job I had for a few weeks one day we got back already later than we should have from a delivery and our manager was trying to force us to stay even later to unload the empty carts from the trucks and set everything up for the next day
Needless to say most of us were not happy about this as this would effectively mean roughly 2 hours of forced over time
Boss quite literally said if you don't like it you can just leave and not come back and then started panicking when half of the floor immediately picked up their crap and started leaving
Needless to say he quickly went back on that, let us all go home and keep our jobs and it wasn't that big of a deal to just quickly clean up in the morning and we just ended up using the carts directly off of the truck instead of grabbing them from the pile on the other side of the warehouse where they technically needed to be unloaded

I have one. I was hosting a role play server in a game. Now, I’ll admit my character bios are rather lengthy ( 1-2 pages ), but I spend a lot of time and effort on them. This one person joins and I say my bio. To my shock, this person goes off on a rant for maybe 10 minutes about how no one gives a (beep) about detail, stop wasting peoples time, etc. I was fuming and told them to leave if they didn’t like how I did my bios, but they didn’t so I resorted to kicking as they were saying some not so nice stuff. Later on, they had the audacity to return to my server to yell at me again😅

It always amazes me when a boss pulls that "what's more important, your education or this shitty job where you constantly get treated with disrespect and abuse?" because uh... I can get another shitty job where I constantly get treated with disrespect and abuse, no problem. All I have to do is go up the street and apply at a fast food job. Yes, I worked at a fast food job while I was in college, it certainly wasn't enough pay to cover tuition, I just wanted the employee discount for cheaper food.

Oh I would LOVE for an employer (or someone I volunteer for) to tell me I can't just resign, and have to submit a proper letter of resignation.
"Oh I can't? Go ahead and stop me." and I'd walk away with a finger or two in the air.
