X4 Foundations Flak Raptor vs Defense Drone Swarm

  • Using a Split Raptor with 69 Flak Turrets to stop a Defense Drone Swarm at a Xenon Shipyard. I've never had the resource or credits to have a Raptor until after the Xenon annihilation. In this play-through, I prioritized having the Raptor before the Xenon were gone. I normally use hit and and run tactics on Xenon stations with destroyers, and flee from the Drone Swarms. This is the first time I was able to stand ground and completely wear the Drone Swarm.

    Got to love Split design philosophy.
    Argon: All around well balanced ships with good shields and well distributed turrets.
    Teladi: Slow and entirely focused on defense. Their destroyer has it's heavy turrets aimed backwards to fire while retreating.
    Paranid: More firepower and speed at the cost of some shields
    Split: PARANID ARE PUSSIES! MORE DAKKA! WHO NEEDS SHIELDS ANYWAY!?

      I've only been to Raptor level in a couple play-throughs. The first time I got one, there were no Xenon left. I pretty much had to destroy them in order to keep enough ships, to make the money, to build the stations, to do all the things. I couldn't move forward to destroy them, I had to destroy them to move forward, because ... X. On this play-through, I made getting the Raptor my priority. I used every trick I've learned from previous plays, and mostly made the Scale Plate Pact "Donate" ships for me to sell. It payed off, once you get a fully armed Raptor, not much can argue with you. When you get good at advantage maneuvers, even an I with two K can stop you.

    If Split frigates still handle like fighters, then I am definitely getting this game. Tiger (Iron Maiden) player ship, Panther carrier (Master of Puppets) with Solano fighters, and Shrike carrier (Electric Funeral) with Eclipse heavy fighters. And last, but not least, the Helot Prime (Argon TL) and Herr Doktor (my Hades bomber). That simple little fleet brought me great joy, even though I never made it very far in the game.

    • @TheClone1324
      @TheClone1324 3 года назад +2

      Sadly there are no frigates in this game. Well, there are some ships classified as "frigates" but they're nothing more than corvettes with a place to land a fighter. But those corvettes have a pretty wide variety. The Teladi Osprey is very slow und not agile but it's a TANK. Best Hull Points and Shields you can get in that class. Whereas the Paranid Nemesis is just a real big fighter with great maneuverability and two turrets on top. Best Player Ship imo. The Split corvettes are very fast but not that agile. But they have great firepower. The Dragon has the highest amount of forward mounted weapons in the game and the Cobra has all its turrets at the front to deal damage. Just make sure nothing gets behind you...
      As someone who played every game except X3AP and XR, I can say that I really enjoy this game. There are many differences in comparrison to X3 (or any other game for that matter) but it has its own charme. Like pretty much any other X game you have the freedom to do what you want. You start with a crappy small fighter and end up with multiple fleets and stations at your command.
      But you should know some of the ships from earlyer games. The Phoenix is still the slowest but tankiest destroyer and the Pegasus is still the fastest ship in the known universe, even though all ships look completely different that their predecessors.
      I can recommend this game!

    • @ScienceZombie

      I would also add to TheClone1324's comment, "The Rattlesnake". The new Split destroyer is the Rattlesnake, and just as one would expect, twice the firepower, half to one third the shields, much faster, and very maneuverable compared to the rest of the commonwealth. It's a destroyer that flies like a frigate.

    despite the awesomeness, a problem since the beginning of X4's release still persists, the difficulty of the turrets to hit fighters (even the medium size frigates/corvettes), especially with other types of turrets. you literally have more than a dozen flaks targeting a single drone and one can see several shots from multiple turrets do not hit a drone until a few seconds of continuous fire. the flax helps a bit since it seems to have AoE.
    EDIT: Another thing is rebalance of earlier version ships (argon, teladi, and paranid) to atleast have their larger ships have more firepower while still following their forte in ship design. at 4.00 and split ships have more fire power than the earlier three races and terrans have overall equal fire power to split but with more shield.
    playing in 4.00 and waiting for my raptor to finish building. it takes a lot of resources tho.
    were the Large turrets plasma or pulse?

    • @ScienceZombie
      @ScienceZombie  3 года назад +2

      I started a new for 4.0 as well. I "borrowed" a Behemoth from the SCA. I was shocked when it was able to handle a swarm about half this size. Granted it had flack, plasma, and Terran Shields with the Basic Recharge Enhancement. It does show that turret abilities have come a long way since release. I think the secret may be as simple as sticking with Argon Turrets. Their rotation speed is so much better that they seem to hit a lot more often. If you have more credit than you can spent, rolling Advance Annihilator Enhancements with Damage, Reload, and Rotation speed bonuses can help too.
      I just "liberated" an Asgard that was too busy in Scale Plate Green to pay attention to my boarding crews. Using the small amount of flak that it can mount, a Jian full of flaks on its deck, and a boat load of Argon Large Pulse turrets, it has no problems with swarms either. It did so well, that I swapped the 4 front upper large turrets to plasma in order to take out xenon stations faster.
      The Raptor in this video was mostly all flak on medium mounts, and all plasma for the large mounts.

      A little bit of all of the above. This is often a hard fight to do in person without a large fleet. You often need to defeat thee destroyers and their compliment to get to the enemy shipyard. That had already been done before this clip started. When you approach the station, it sends out it's defense drones. Often times there are more of them than seen in this clip. Defense drones will shoot and destroy your engines and your weapons, leaving you adrift with no defense. Even though they are easily destroyed, they have strength in numbers. They come in such large groups that they overwhelm the targeting and firing abilities on most ships. When this clip was recorded, this was the only ship with enough turret mounts to not only withstand the swarm, but defeat it.

    • @ScienceZombie
      @ScienceZombie  2 года назад

      Agreed. Defense Drone Swarms on Xenon stations seem to be a bit like playing the lottery. Sometimes there are none or few, sometimes you are swarmed. I've attacked some in friendly territory like Frontier Edge, Hatikvahs, or Holy Vision thinking it would be no big deal and had swarms that could completely disable all weapons and engines on a destroyer and leave me adrift waiting for help. How is the game by the way, I played just when X4 came out and the economy stalled pretty fast. Has that improved? Anyone know.

    • @ScienceZombie
      @ScienceZombie  3 года назад

      Agreed. I think the Flak in this example is split into 6-8 turret groups. Each group seems to act as a single unit, and each unit is capable of tracking and firing on a target of opportunity. Often times multiple groups pick the same target due to the targets proximity. It would be nice if the turret groups would select the next target by ignoring targets that other turret groups have selected unless no other targets exist. This isn't an issue for most ships as they have a low number of turrets in a low number of groups. The Raptor is quite the exception in the game right now.

    • @ScienceZombie
      @ScienceZombie  3 года назад

      I have not had any economy issues since the mid 2.x releases. I think Egosoft did a good job on fixing that. Even after I wiped out the Xenon, there were plenty more market sinks. Even after I chose the "Peaceful" plot finishes, the market sill has activity. The Scale Plate Pact is now consistent with their theft from stations. Boarding their destroyers is a great way to train up your boarding Ops. The addition of the Split Fallen Families has myself, and the other factions, under constant threat of FAF Rattlesnake destroyers. With 4.0 now out, it looks like the Yaki may also be a constant threat similar to the Fallen Families, and the number of Kha'ak raids seems to be turned up as well.

      Raptors don't have main guns. They only have turrets which can only be fired by the AI. You need to set up your AI on how you want it to fire the turrets. Press enter while flying to get to the menu for that IIRC. The guy in the video showed the screen you need for that near the end.

      This clip was made to show that a Raptor with a full flak loadout can withstand a large station defense drone swarm. At the time, it was the only capital ship in the game that could do so. A large drone swarm can disable engines and weapon systems on any other capital ship, and leave them dead in space. The station does have turret defenses, but the strategy here was to stay just outside their firing range, as the capital weapons on this ship out-range the station by about 1 kilometer. The key thing to do here is position the ship so that you are in firing range, stay out of the stations range, and keep a rotation that allows line of sight for as many of your capital mounts as possible. Most of the excitement that you seem to be craving happened before the station attack, as this station was being guarded by 4 capital ships and dozens of small and medium fighters. They were obviously the priority before mounting a direct attack on the station itself. Weapon projectile speed is affected by your ships velocity. Faster and more nimble Destroyers can use this to their advantage by firing while at speed, but this ship is a carrier, slow to turn and accelerate.

      Why would the speed of a projectile fired through empty space change at all? Unless it's a missile with its own propulsion, it wouldn't. And if you think there's not much to do, prioritise or decide in an X game - that's about as wrong as it gets lol, watch some more videos. In this clip, almost all the decisions have been made before the fight because of how this ship works. A slow, autonomous turret boat.
