No matter how many times I listen to this, no matter what mood I'm in when I come to it, I always end up in the same state. It's just beautiful, melancholic, full of longing and resignation, but at the same time is touched with something that is purely human, and so can not fail to be overlayed with sadness, but also optimism and the joy of living. It's just wonderful.
I return every now and then to top up my sadness.
Just one of the greatest songs of all time. Spread it wherever and whenever you can, dear People. x
R.I.P. Clive Palmer, a true rebel and pioneer!
Masterclass in songwriting. Several excellent covers on youtube but something about the fragility of Jill Johnson's voice makes this original very special.
First time hearing and i'm crying. Just beautiful.
She has such a lovely clear voice and the music is so peaceful, I love this song :)
I always thought of Clive Palmer as just a banjo plonker. Never realised he could write songs like this.
My goodness, what a stunning song. Absolutely perfect. I'm speechless. Thank you.
Forever cherish these lyrics, and this melody, paw patrol chapters have been turned, memories, cemented, and its message still stands true, Evergreen, despite the deciduous theme
Always my favourite track on the original LP Jill has a truly wonderful voice they were good live in the 60s/70s I was there this track takes me back.
This song was played after my mother passed at her celebration of life. I still cry 10 years later listening to it....
You posted this on another video...how many other tunes were played?
OH_I _Will what are you even talking Bout
Now with a slight hang over and heading gently into 2020, one needs a song to gently push them on in the right direction
absolutely haunting, such a beautiful song !
Singing bird! Thanks for posting this Jewel!
This is great!
Came here via the Clive Palmer biography 'Empty Pocket Blues' by Grahame Hood.
Likewise
Takes me back to when I went to one of their concerts in Cheltenham
such a great song. one of the greatest albums i've heard.
The Album stands up to today's standards always bwill been a favourite of mine from the release, this song is amazing.
had this song on tape decades ago....
, no idea what the title was, nor who sang it... dound the name of the lyrics with google, "a leaf must fall", and youtube found it. so sad and so wonderful...
thank you, internet...
now i would like the name of the singer. maybe someone can help
A friend of mine just said that it's Jill Johnson :)
nanoshed then there must be two different jill johnsons. because when i search for that name on YT i get a woman of about 40 as a result, and this cannot be "my" jill because the recording is from 1969, and as she cannot have sung that wit the age of ten she must be about my age => over 60
Bud Hensley this link tells about 1968/69. as jill must have been about 20 then, she must be over 65 now. what i see in the youtube clip is a woman who must be a lot younger, maybe in her 40´s. so there must be two jill johnsons. johnson is not a rare name...
I like the room tone, the place where it was recorded. I assume its the microphone placement
Thanks for posting. This recording is now rooted deep in my soul.
Steve Ferguson yeah
Fantastic song
2024 and still this song is special
Im familier with all the COB stuff, but this is a first for me. Just gorgeous. Thanks so much.
Absolutely great, this is one of my favorites.
beautiful song, , love the album
Mary Hopkin does a STUNNING version of this
You're right. Yet NOTHING surpasses this original. One day in 1969, something transcendental came to be. And this was it...
The guitar playing is better on this version. I think the ethereal quality of the voice also suits the song better.
Agreed
Is this the same Clive Palmer who ran the Folk club in Glasgow and was in the original "Incredible String Band"..??
Yes
@@susanna5347 Thank you..JK
For sure. Not sure if its the same club you're thinking of but he ran the Howff in Edinburgh where ISB and Bert Jansch started. I think he called it the 'Incredible Folk Club', or something like that. There's probably some info in Bert's biography 'Dazzling Stranger'. Legendary stuff.
Jillian Johnson-Sharp or Jill Johnson according to the green man.
Mary Hopkin does a lovely rendition on "Recollections"
Agreed
Anyone know what happened to Jill Johnson please.................
I heard she had a career in software development after her years in music. Pete Berryman will probably know more, I emailed him some years ago about one of his songs, mentioned I loved Jill's clear voice and he sent my comments to her.
@@PeterHassall Many Thanks for your kind reply
Oh but they were good.
pretty :(
Clive went far too soon.
