Are the variation images taken from the product variation thumbnail or the attribute thumbnail?

Will you have an option to show the variation thumbnail in the single product or archive page instead of the attribute thumbnail. Logicaly i want to have 1 attribute with 3 terms for example:
Attribute: Model
Terms: Model 1, Model 2, Model 3
And use the same attribute for all my products so that i can create variations. But want to use the thumbnails of each product so i dont have to create 400 attributes for each of my 400 products with variations.
