- Als Überraschungsgast startete der legendäre Lotus 72 an der 5. Bergprüfung für historischer Sport- und Rennwagen in Altbüron am 21. August 2011. Mit diesem Fahrzeug gewann der unvergessliche Jochen Rindt 1970 mehrere Grand Prix.

Kids today have no idea how massive a design departure the 72 was in 1970 when it was introduced. Essentially every car looked pretty much the same as it did during the 1960's with the front radiators and oval front intake. Then some wings were added on to the same design, then Chapman came up with this. Then it lasted almost five full seasons.
I remember when I first saw the Lotus 72. It was like something from another planet and made all the other cars look ancient. The only other driver I saw who came even close to Rindt's driving style was Ronnie Peterson. I'm surprised Colin Chapman didn't take the brakes out of the car to save weight. Rindt never used the brakes - why use the brakes when you can slow a car down by sliding the car sideways into the corners? Jochen - du warst der Beste.

Jochen was fast. Up there with Jim. Saw them race each other at Mosport ~ 1966. The only posthumous F1 Drivers' Champion, right?

1966: Rindt and Surtees in the Cooper-Maseratis chasing Jack Brabham - that was a fantastic season.
Tragically, both Clark and Rindt died in cars that had the same "Gold Leaf Team Lotus" red and gold liveries.
Magnificent to see a Lotus 72 running again. Anyone know who the driver was decked out in Jochen's distinctive black helmet with white visor?

The main car looks 1970 set up with aero but the rear suspension has outboard coil springs/dampers, not the torsion bars used up until 1974. So its a hybrid 72E maybe?
For Rindt, Clark, Peterson all died in same vessel

The car he died in doesent look that good, lol
I doubt it. Usually cars that were in fatal accidents are completely scrapped.
The wreck of the car Jochen died in was still in existence in a garage of a private collector near Milano in recent years. It never left Italy after the fatal accident in Monza.
