From genuine curiosity, I have always thought that using "Indian" to refer to indigenous Americans was offensive because it came out of stupidity from colonists. But it's used a lot in this documentary. Is this a weird Hollywood take or am I wrong or is it something else?

I am a native part of the Nihankuotana tribe (federally recognized as the cow creek Bank of Umpqua tribe of Indians) and know all too well about the broken treaties of the United States. My ancestors lost our land, language, culture, and my great grandfather fought to get our tribe federally recognized in 1982. I'm proud of my native heritage and am proud to know my tribe is working on reviving the Takelma language once spoken by our ancestors!

I'm Irish. I feel for the Native Americans as it is a reminder of what happened to my people. A message to all Indegenous peoples. Do not ever forget your culture. 90% of Irish culture has been forgotten. The traditional hunting, fishing, sustainable living, home craft has been almost forgotten by most Irish people. Salmon, trout and the like were a big reliant in villages, 1 halibut could feed many families. We even had our own unique hooks, nets, baskets, fishing styles ect. Traditional Irish healing is basically dead aside from few elders who know it and pass on knowledge. But unfortunately the elders often lose their memories. Places like the West are the only ones who have some of it still around. And it's in dying numbers. So please don't forget your culture. It ruins a country and a people

My great grandparents left Ireland because of the famine and went to England. My grandparents weren't allowed to tell anyone they were Irish. It was so ingrained in my grandmother that my father didn't learn he was Irish decent until he was in his 40s after he'd already came to Canada. When I was a kid and she came to visit us in Canada and I still remember how shocked he was. Because my grandmother was made to feel so ashamed I feel like have no connection to my family history.

I am Cherokee, Sadly my father passed away when I was very young and my mother and her family didn't want me to know about Cherokee's history, stories, past. I read all I can I learn all the crafts I can. I try to hold on to some a part of my history. I am glad that much more of the truth is coming out now. I am glad some of the wrongs are being repaired but there is such a king way to go. I hope the government doing pull a fast one again and things keep getting better and better.

I am 53, born and raised in Oregon, and remember being "taught" in very rough, general terms, the history of Euro-American and indigenous interactions from the East to West coast. I learned nothing about the history of Native people in the state where I lived, until recently. It has been illuminating, painful, and necessary.

Every single history teacher in the entire state of Oregon needs to watch this and integrate it into their curriculum. This is what needs to be taught in schools; the truth! And don't get me started on the reparations indigenous peoples are owed.
It was taught in my Oregon school district growing up in the 80's although it was oriented more on Native history and culture and less on "you should feel guilty" which seems to be the current theme. FYI before someone calls me a bigot for that comment my Grandmother was Native American I grew up going to Pow Wows and learning about our history, I just think it is a lot more constructive to teach about the culture and rich history rather than promoting anger, guilt and bitterness over something none of us were involved in. I am also Irish and I realized long ago it was not very constructive to hate the English now for what their ancestors may or may not have done to mine.

As you mentioned later in your post there is no reason to feel shame or guilt over things you didn’t do. I don’t think it is helpful to anyone to maintain the myth of American History as it is taught in public schools and maintained in our media culture. Some level of regret is appropriate, but that’s not the same as shame or guilt. Without some level of regret or acknowledgement there can’t be any meaningful improvement. Sure cultural appreciation has its place, but unfortunately Indian law and Government policy at its core is still based on the Doctrine of Discovery and the Marshal Court decisions from the early 1800s. It would be better for everyone if our laws were based on modern concepts of human rights rather than based on outdated 13th century racist religious doctrine. I only say this because attacks on Tribal sovereignty haven’t stopped, and no amount of cultural appreciation could ever make it stop.

Sadly I lost my language, my heritage, my identity. I was taken from my parents and put in a white home and I was classed as being white, I’m not white, I look very native. When I was thirteen I went to court to divorce my adopted parents so I could claim back my Native Status. Thank Goodness my adopted parents where supportive. Now I can’t pass on our language and heritage to my children and they won’t be able to pass it on to theirs. I can’t help but feel bitter and angry when I hear what happened and what continues to happen to our people. We should be treated a lot better and our treaties honoured. As for the things that were taken it should be given back.

I remember when my father 1st sat me down and told me about the Lakhota Sioux Indians. I was about 9 years old then he told me my grandmother who I never met was full Sioux Indian. She married a black man my grandfather. Who was half Indian as well. After hearing that I always wanted to visit my people. My father looks 100% Indian to most ppl. I always thought we were just black. Looking at the ppl in this video made mu heart fell warm. They look just like my dad.
The most sadest part of European colonization and indoctrination is that it taught so many Tribes to shun Black American people who were descendance of slaves or stolen from Mexico. Back in the late seventies many tribes received monetary compensation for lost lands .This was done by The Indian Claims Commission and tribes were paid based on acreage . This helped some tribes but not all benefited from these settlements . But one fact remains unchanged many of our loved ones who've passed are not buried near their ancestors . . Those Lands for many Tribes are lost forever.

I knew nothing of this treachery. I am publicly apologizing for any of my ancestors who may have been involved in taking away Native land. Most of my family as far back as I can see it, stated in the East, and did not immigrate to America until the late 1800’s. BUT....WHO KNOWS. We ALL need to help the Native people’s in ANY WAY possible. I am a California mission Indian gabrielino tribe. Not federally recognized. Everything that was taken from us nothing has been given back to us. Maybe the wrong people were sent up to stand in for us years ago there's something that we need to do because our ancestors suffered and our parents have died waiting, my grandmother died waiting to see what they would give us for stealing our Los Angeles and Orange County land from us.

A lot of it was hidden in plain sight! It was accepted because it was under the guise of"religion". The "forefathers" were very religious as well as their following. So once it was " discovered" that us natives didn't have Christianity, or whatever religion they followed, that we didn't understand or speak English and we didn't convert or accept their religion or language.. we were then considered "heathens." We were simple savages to them. More of a nuisance to them than anything. There is more information that WASN'T put in here that should be taught as well. Because slavery was common and accepted, the government and settlers tried to make Indians into slaves . They thought that since they had done this to the black " heathens" and it was working that they could do the same with Indians!! But native people were too proud to be slaves. They would refuse to work for nothing, theyd work, but they wanted to be paid for the work. People didn't want to pay, they wanted slaves! So the Indians would refuse to work or try running away. Children would runaway every chance they could! Men would take beatings daily and still not work. White people thought that since they beat on black people and put fear into them to make them slaves, that they could just do the same thing with Indians. But Indians had no fear of death. And didn't care if they got beaten either. They would say things such as "wounds can heal, but broken pride can never be fixed." So they'd refuse to be broken. They'd refuse to work. They'd be starved, flogged and stripped but would still refuse to work. It was just another reason, better yet, an excuse for white people to loathe the Indians. Because they'd say that they can't " learn" or be " taught" to work. That Indians were lazy! If you look at it that way from the white man's point of view, it was easy to kill an Indian. We didn't speak their language. We didn't want their religion, we couldn't be used as slaves and we lived in teepees and slept in the dirt. We were the epitome of the word heathen to white people. So presidents, governers, generals and anybody with power were sending this message out to common people. That we were "no good" and that we wasted the land that they wanted. We don't go to church or speak English and refuse to, so how can we be a civilized people!? We weren't to them. We were nothing to them. So we should be eliminated. We were like coyotes to a farmer. A nuisance animal that would "steal" from the "good civilized people". So we should be treated as such! All of these things combined gave white people all that they needed to know, to eliminate us! It became accepted and acceptable to kill Indians without fear of any repercussions. In fact several new outposts or forts would PAY for dead Indians. Just like they would do with the beaver pelts, wolf, mink and other animals. If you brought in a dead indian that you killed they'd give $10 at one point, then it dropped to a dollar. This is actually where " scalping" originated from!! The forts would have so these dead bodies laying around of rotting Indians and it became hard to deal with. Nobody wanted to bury them and burning them smelled the fort up. So instead of bringing in a whole body they just started accepting scalps as proof that you had killed an Indian. You could bring in a scalp and still get full payment, so that's how scalping started! The Indian people couldn't figure out why white men were doing this. When they'd go back to their villages to look for survivors or gather their things they started noticing that the whites were leaving the bodies of the dead but stealing their scalps! They were confused by this and assumed it was an act of war to try and put fear into the Indians . So. Not to be outdone and to try and do the same thing back.. Indians started scalping dead people to try and scare the white man. And of course you won't read this in any history books in schools, even today.. but that's how it all started.. and to help spread the hate even further, and get more soldiers out west, fort leaders would have the press come in and draw pictures or take pictures if they had a camera and write up stories about the savagery of these "dirty Indians!" And what they were doing to innocent white folks! Of course they wouldn't report or tell about why THEY accepted scalps for payment. They would omit this pertinent information. Word spread,and spread fast, to the east about the brutal scalping these Indians were doing and that's all congress needed to send even more soldiers west to eliminate the Indians and to produce and buy more guns and ammunition ! That's the true story of where scalping came from. Sorry for the long story. But I thought it needed to be explained and said.

I wish I knew as much about California Indians as I have learned here about Oregon's Native populations. This reminds me of Hawaiian history, where the missionaries came in, married into the Ali'i class, were eventually Hawaiian citizens (Hawaii was recognized in 1848 as a sovereign nation by France, England, Japan)and these "citizens" first made the king sign the Bayonet Constitution and later overthrew the queen. There is no treaty of annexation. It was never signed. Hawaii remains a sovereign nation, but it does Hawaii very little good. The US occupies it and has used it terribly. Most people have no idea.

I think what is so jarring about euro americans today is that they often view their folk and culture as stemming from manifest destiny and colonialism. I grew up in Mill City Oregon. on Santiam Kalapuya land. We were not even told there was native americans in oregon. It feels like they tried their hardest to make us think white people had only ever been here. This was in the early 2000's.
My Grandmother was Apache married a Gaditino , that's a jewish Spaniard. They had 300 acres in Silver City New Mexico. Once her husband died they took her Land. She moved to City of Commerce Los Angeles California and I was born in Bella Vista Hospital Belvedere California in 1964.
My great grandmother said her mother thought the French man that came to gather skins were the most beautiful things they had seen and married to them when they could.

I was born and raised in Southern Virginia. Since a large portion of my ancestor's history was "lost" or "destroyed", and it became law not to identify themselves as indigenous Americans, I have little to nothing to hand down to my offspring!!!

From genuine curiosity, I have always thought that using "Indian" to refer to indigenous Americans was offensive because it came out of stupidity from colonists. But it's used a lot in this documentary. Is this a weird Hollywood take or am I wrong or is it something else?

I am a native part of the Nihankuotana tribe (federally recognized as the cow creek Bank of Umpqua tribe of Indians) and know all too well about the broken treaties of the United States. My ancestors lost our land, language, culture, and my great grandfather fought to get our tribe federally recognized in 1982. I'm proud of my native heritage and am proud to know my tribe is working on reviving the Takelma language once spoken by our ancestors!

I'm Irish. I feel for the Native Americans as it is a reminder of what happened to my people. A message to all Indegenous peoples. Do not ever forget your culture. 90% of Irish culture has been forgotten. The traditional hunting, fishing, sustainable living, home craft has been almost forgotten by most Irish people. Salmon, trout and the like were a big reliant in villages, 1 halibut could feed many families. We even had our own unique hooks, nets, baskets, fishing styles ect. Traditional Irish healing is basically dead aside from few elders who know it and pass on knowledge. But unfortunately the elders often lose their memories. Places like the West are the only ones who have some of it still around. And it's in dying numbers. So please don't forget your culture. It ruins a country and a people

My great grandparents left Ireland because of the famine and went to England. My grandparents weren't allowed to tell anyone they were Irish. It was so ingrained in my grandmother that my father didn't learn he was Irish decent until he was in his 40s after he'd already came to Canada. When I was a kid and she came to visit us in Canada and I still remember how shocked he was. Because my grandmother was made to feel so ashamed I feel like have no connection to my family history.

It was taught in my Oregon school district growing up in the 80's although it was oriented more on Native history and culture and less on "you should feel guilty" which seems to be the current theme. FYI before someone calls me a bigot for that comment my Grandmother was Native American I grew up going to Pow Wows and learning about our history, I just think it is a lot more constructive to teach about the culture and rich history rather than promoting anger, guilt and bitterness over something none of us were involved in. I am also Irish and I realized long ago it was not very constructive to hate the English now for what their ancestors may or may not have done to mine.

As you mentioned later in your post there is no reason to feel shame or guilt over things you didn’t do. I don’t think it is helpful to anyone to maintain the myth of American History as it is taught in public schools and maintained in our media culture. Some level of regret is appropriate, but that’s not the same as shame or guilt. Without some level of regret or acknowledgement there can’t be any meaningful improvement. Sure cultural appreciation has its place, but unfortunately Indian law and Government policy at its core is still based on the Doctrine of Discovery and the Marshal Court decisions from the early 1800s. It would be better for everyone if our laws were based on modern concepts of human rights rather than based on outdated 13th century racist religious doctrine. I only say this because attacks on Tribal sovereignty haven’t stopped, and no amount of cultural appreciation could ever make it stop.

Sadly I lost my language, my heritage, my identity. I was taken from my parents and put in a white home and I was classed as being white, I’m not white, I look very native. When I was thirteen I went to court to divorce my adopted parents so I could claim back my Native Status. Thank Goodness my adopted parents where supportive. Now I can’t pass on our language and heritage to my children and they won’t be able to pass it on to theirs. I can’t help but feel bitter and angry when I hear what happened and what continues to happen to our people. We should be treated a lot better and our treaties honoured. As for the things that were taken it should be given back.

As a Native Ukrainian, I sympathise with the Native American people. My nation was also under the same threat, when Russians, Germans, and representatives of other nations came here and committed genocides and displacements. They looked down on our culture, language, traditions. Now we are fighting again for our right to exist, speak our mother tongue, follow our traditions, live on our own land.

A lot of it was hidden in plain sight! It was accepted because it was under the guise of"religion".
The "forefathers" were very religious as well as their following. So once it was " discovered" that us natives didn't have Christianity, or whatever religion they followed, that we didn't understand or speak English and we didn't convert or accept their religion or language.. we were then considered "heathens." We were simple savages to them. More of a nuisance to them than anything.
There is more information that WASN'T put in here that should be taught as well. Because slavery was common and accepted, the government and settlers tried to make Indians into slaves . They thought that since they had done this to the black " heathens" and it was working that they could do the same with Indians!! But native people were too proud to be slaves. They would refuse to work for nothing, theyd work, but they wanted to be paid for the work. People didn't want to pay, they wanted slaves! So the Indians would refuse to work or try running away. Children would runaway every chance they could! Men would take beatings daily and still not work. White people thought that since they beat on black people and put fear into them to make them slaves, that they could just do the same thing with Indians. But Indians had no fear of death. And didn't care if they got beaten either. They would say things such as "wounds can heal, but broken pride can never be fixed." So they'd refuse to be broken. They'd refuse to work. They'd be starved, flogged and stripped but would still refuse to work.
It was just another reason, better yet, an excuse for white people to loathe the Indians. Because they'd say that they can't " learn" or be " taught" to work. That Indians were lazy!
If you look at it that way from the white man's point of view, it was easy to kill an Indian. We didn't speak their language. We didn't want their religion, we couldn't be used as slaves and we lived in teepees and slept in the dirt. We were the epitome of the word heathen to white people.
So presidents, governers, generals and anybody with power were sending this message out to common people. That we were "no good" and that we wasted the land that they wanted. We don't go to church or speak English and refuse to, so how can we be a civilized people!? We weren't to them. We were nothing to them. So we should be eliminated. We were like coyotes to a farmer. A nuisance animal that would "steal" from the "good civilized people". So we should be treated as such!
All of these things combined gave white people all that they needed to know, to eliminate us!
It became accepted and acceptable to kill Indians without fear of any repercussions. In fact several new outposts or forts would PAY for dead Indians. Just like they would do with the beaver pelts, wolf, mink and other animals. If you brought in a dead indian that you killed they'd give $10 at one point, then it dropped to a dollar. This is actually where " scalping" originated from!! The forts would have so these dead bodies laying around of rotting Indians and it became hard to deal with. Nobody wanted to bury them and burning them smelled the fort up. So instead of bringing in a whole body they just started accepting scalps as proof that you had killed an Indian. You could bring in a scalp and still get full payment, so that's how scalping started!
The Indian people couldn't figure out why white men were doing this. When they'd go back to their villages to look for survivors or gather their things they started noticing that the whites were leaving the bodies of the dead but stealing their scalps! They were confused by this and assumed it was an act of war to try and put fear into the Indians . So. Not to be outdone and to try and do the same thing back.. Indians started scalping dead people to try and scare the white man. And of course you won't read this in any history books in schools, even today.. but that's how it all started.. and to help spread the hate even further, and get more soldiers out west, fort leaders would have the press come in and draw pictures or take pictures if they had a camera and write up stories about the savagery of these "dirty Indians!" And what they were doing to innocent white folks! Of course they wouldn't report or tell about why THEY accepted scalps for payment. They would omit this pertinent information. Word spread,and spread fast, to the east about the brutal scalping these Indians were doing and that's all congress needed to send even more soldiers west to eliminate the Indians and to produce and buy more guns and ammunition !
That's the true story of where scalping came from.

I wish I knew as much about California Indians as I have learned here about Oregon's Native populations. This reminds me of Hawaiian history, where the missionaries came in, married into the Ali'i class, were eventually Hawaiian citizens (Hawaii was recognized in 1848 as a sovereign nation by France, England, Japan)and these "citizens" first made the king sign the Bayonet Constitution and later overthrew the queen. There is no treaty of annexation. It was never signed. Hawaii remains a sovereign nation, but it does Hawaii very little good. The US occupies it and has used it terribly. Most people have no idea.

I hear that. It's importnant for cultures of the entire world to remember and appreciate their folk traditions and cultural histories. I think what is so jarring about euro americans today is that they often view their folk and culture as stemming from manifest destiny and colonialism. It is central to their identity and ideologies that they often do not want to even listen to different peoples accounts and history from those time periods and onward.

I grew up in Mill City Oregon. on Santiam Kalapuya land. We were not even told there was native americans in oregon. It feels like they tried their hardest to make us think white people had only ever been here. This was in the early 2000's.
My Grandmother was Apache married a Gaditino , that's a jewish Spaniard. They had 300 acres in Silver City New Mexico. Once her husband died they took her Land. She moved to City of Commerce Los Angeles California and I was born in Bella Vista Hospital Belvedere California in 1964.

I was born and raised in Southern Virginia. Since a large portion of my ancestor's history was "lost" or "destroyed", and it became law not to identify themselves as indigenous Americans, I have little to nothing to hand down to my offspring!!!
