This is his very first album. He recorded this while attending college and started selling copies. He was maybe 20 and completely came out of left field with one of the most innovative albums and sounds. I think this was recorded in 1999 or 2000? So he was doing something completely different than anyone else at the time. He is such a visionary. Goddamn I love Ariel so much.
havent watched through the whole vid, but one of ariel's most underrated traits in my opinion is his bass writing. he has a knack for catchy basslines that have strong melody, without pulling attention away from everything else. also, like someone said, all the drums are just beatboxing -- it takes a certain something to make such a bold decision and have it work without feeling gimmicky or obvious. his early recordings are really one of the best streaks of self produced multi-instrumentalist albums ever made, lo-fi or not. thanks for taking the time to make this vid.
and like you said, it's hard not to listen to this kind of thing and think "i really should pick up my guitar and start recording something", and that might be one of the best things music can do for a listener, inspire them to take the dive and make something of their own.
Ariel is the most important artist of the past 2 decades. He has a changed my life. I’ve been an avid fan since 2008 when I first heard my friends burnt copy of House Arrest. He’s single handedly steered pop music in a cool direction. You should do one on the album Scared Famous/FF >>. That’s his best one I think. Just hit after hit after hit. He’s such a brilliant pop writer. On par with the Beatles.
Great reaction! Ariel is my favorite songwriter, and it speaks to your ear that you weren't dismissive but noticed the qualities. Something I like about his music is all of the paradoxes: The songs are both bubble gum pop and musically sophisticated. The lyrics seem both like nihilistic babbling and principled. The production is grating on the ears while also being intoxicating. The guitar parts seem both untutored and advanced. The music is retro and somehow futuristic. For all these reasons, I genuinely have no idea how he came up with all these demos, and his music always makes me feel satisfied and inspired to record. Personally, I would recommend 'Scared Famous' as a great second stop, although I also agree with those pointing to 'House Arrest'.
This album really takes off at “Among Dreams” I noticed you perked up quite a bit with that one. It’s an absolutely beautiful track. It’s been one of my favorites of his since I first discovered him. I’m actually enjoying watching someone discover this beauty for the first time. I was completely floored the first time I heard it.
Ariel Pink is really a greatest of all time musician type and I love that you immediately appreciate the world building he creates through his creativity here.
Top album. Amazing how he did it. "Envelopes Another Day" was the song that i first heard by him. Id never heard nothing like it. He's still putting great stuff out.
i’ve heard him described as Can + Robert Smith + David Bowie + Brian Wilson + Kurt Cobain.. you hear all that in his music, along with an extreme talent for melody and arrangements
I like the insight you have about the listener having to put in effort to get something out of what they’re hearing. Very cool reactions overall. would love you to cover where Ariel carries his lo fi talents into his hi fi album dedicated to Bobby Jameson, but do as you will, always. Thanks and subbed.
Decaited to Bobby Jamieson is such an impossible mix of bubblegum pop and low fi. Ariel never ceases to amaze me in how many of his albums have the same quality, yet they all have their own sound individually. I'm lucky enough to have seen him live a few times in the past 15 years ❤
Hey Prog dog! Thank you for giving some time to AP. Would love to hear your thoughts on his later, little less lo-fi 'bigger releases'. From Before Today onwards. Some awesome records. He's had a troublesome couple of years and has more or less been completely 'cancelled' (political leanings). Which is a real shame as nobody makes music quite like AP.
@@deanwolfechannel He's a very sweet and thoughtful guy who's been through hell over silly BS. He did an hour long interview about on Triggernometry. He's remarkably human.
The only lofi I've listened to previously is lofi hiphop, chillhop and jazzhop, all of which I enjoy a lot. This was the first time I've heard this kind of lofi. Thanks for sharing.
If u like creativity, uncoventional chord progressions u should check 12 Rods "Split Personalities". Its super unique mix of new wave, indie rock, shoegaze, sophisti pop with vocalist who sounds like androgynous version of Ozzy Osbourne. Imho the best 90s album.
I don't agree with this guy's politics but he is undeniably one of the great pop songwriters of the 21st century. Pom Pom has his highest highs, but it's a White Album kind of project where it covers a lot of bases and everyone has different favourites.
Dean are you familiar with Animal Collective? Close contemporaries of Ariel Pink and one of the best progressive acts of the 21st century. Merriweather Post Pavilion was an era defining album in 2009 but my favourite is the experimental Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished
I've heard of animal collective in reading about Ariel, but havent gitten far enough to hear them yet. Also I will prob dive in to more Ariel tho maybe on my own
@@deanwolfechannel It would be great to see a reaction to them. They're proper deconstructionist, surrealistic artists who get unfairly lumped in with generic indie schlock because of scene associations

This man has an amazing soul. He's been treated quite unfairly in the last few years. I hope he's well.
I hope so too.
He is I saw him at a party not to long ago
Ariel pink completely changed how i listened to music. A vivid memory for me.

Well said. I've since watched a couple concerts of his on youtube, in France and in a radio station studio. Fascinating on many levels.

that first 4 tracks Men.. always got me
A masterpiece of an album. This was my dxm addict soundtrack
Easily one of the greatest artists of our time and this is one of his best. Happy you checked this out.

Thanks, ya if I can I want to interview him.

I'll consider it! hey I recognize your picture- I have been exploring other lofi now too - as well as releasing my own old lofi originals.

To be 16 again deep in the Ariel pink rabbit hole good times
I miss those days
Hopefully you get the chance to listen to house arrest.
That's my favorite album. Great content as always 👍
Thanks, I think this was my recommendation. These songs grow on you, just try to get them out of your head after the second listen
Ariel Pink is the best.

cancelled? That's awful. I will definitely review more of his stuff.

R. Stevie Moore may have invented Lo-fi but Ariel Pink invented 'Hauntology'

Sleep Token please. Take me back to Eden or Ascenionism is a great start
Is that a dream machine poster i see back there? Theyre big fans of ariel :))
Cool, yes it is. I may try to interview Ariel
New subscriber. You should listen to House Arrest next, his best lofi album
I just might.

This album and House Arrest are lo-fi classics also
Ariel's music is full of prog moments. I also find it to be incredibly sad despite the humor.

The drums sound so weird because its actually beatboxing.
ok that's interesting because it sounded 'real' - like something was being hit
Please check out R Stevie Moore 😁
I have and im a huge fan!! He is the OG home recorder/producer--- and dang good songwriting...top tier
The drums are mostly made with his mouth in case someone didn't mention that already
love it.
