What's up with all of those nicks and scrapes all over the barrel? Did it come like that, beat up and distressed!? I've been curious about this lens for a while and you did a thorough review, that actually makes me think twice about getting it, because it sounds like it is barely usable with the bokeh turned all the way up. That kind of eliminates the whole point of the lens... :( It's not such a cheap lens for something that's going to sit on the shelf most of the time.
The one we were sent is the only press sample available in the UK. Or at least it was at the time of shooting. Hence the distressed look. It can take a bashing!
+Chris Vellrath Hi Chris, don't get the wrong way though, this lens is special! But you MUST like the effect that it's creating, I am giving opinion base on my shooting style and like I said in the video, I prefer off centre composition so hence this lens limits my use but as you can see those images included in the video, it can be awesome and cool. I totally love the 85mm Petzval lens and if you like something more extreme, then the 58mm is for you!
Right I think probably is, but considering the limitations, I really can't splurge the $ that they're asking for at this point. I'd love to have it maybe used one day.
+Chris Vellrath Sure, but I think the Petzval lenses, either 58 or the 85, is quite interesting and should try at least once! I personally own the 85 and love it, as you can tell, more than the 58 :P. Lomography just announced another vintage lens and it's quite interesting too!
+Jimmy Cheng I'll say that is cool to see zenit firing up it's factories producing some unique and affordable offerings. I definitely might consider the 85mm petzval, as I've heard good things about it. the only other 85mm prime I own is a Helios 40-2, new once zenit decided to start making them again. thanks for taking an in depth look into some of these special lenses.
I have watched this video a few times the videographer is good and loved the bicycle at about 9 mins. . so I did get confused are you approaching the subject as a still photographer or movie photog..and you mentioned bokeh more than once please review your aspect ratio at source.
Hello Jimmy Cheng. Very good video. I want to buy a petzval lens. I'm asking you what is exactly the difference between petzval 85 mm and 58 mm? The bokeh look like very the same. Did you note some differences? I got a russian lens : Helios 44-2 and the bokeh is look like very similar no? Please let me know your advice on this! thank you! Francis
I have both several of the helios 44 variations and this 58 petzval and if you want bokeh fun think this is an awesome lens, super glad I picked one up
It's really nice that you are reviewing the 58 lens in comparison to the 85 one. This is so helpful. Thanks a lot.
Really amazing 58mm Bokeh Control Art Lens
Very helpful review Jimmy. Thanks!
From the dings on the barrel it looks to be brass plated?
i cant see any center-sharpness! couldnt you nail it in your shots or what happened?
Johnny Brabus i dont think the lens is very sharp
cool lens for photographer. the model is "sharp" by the way. LIKED
Can this lens be used on Leica film camera ? in terms of rangefinder coupling for focus. I know you are using EOS to Leica M mount adapter.
Will this work with an apsc sized nikon f mount camera like the d5200?THX a lot!
I mean you could frame it wider with subject in center, and than crop in post for offset composition
Pro trick : you can watch movies on flixzone. Me and my gf have been using it for watching all kinds of movies lately.
@Marcus Felix yea, have been using Flixzone for since november myself :D
@Marcus Felix Yea, I have been watching on Flixzone for since november myself =)
@Marcus Felix yea, have been watching on flixzone for years myself :D
@Marcus Felix definitely, I've been using flixzone for years myself :)
Spectacular
Nice model, very patient as you try to slowly nail the focus. The lens looks like it is easily prone to flare. Thank you for this review.
