This SITM is nothing but an "upgraded version" of that. What YG actually meant by "doing something different" in that announcement video was the M/V concept... YG had never done "Disney" ish M/V and this was the 1st for them. (At least I've never seen any other similar M/V concept to this done by YG since I've started following them i e. last 16 years)

I mean I'm following YG since it just started to go BIG (since 2008) and since then one thing I learnt about YHS is that He's a genius when it comes to finding talent and producing them. As you said he was the idol himself, but not any idol he was the idol from the group who MADE k-pop, 1st one to become "household" name "seo taiji and boys" so he definitely understands what's needed to make it BIG
