@Crayshen Pete started out as a bear in the Alice comedies, became a dog in the Oswald series and finally a big (And later extremely fat) cat ...since a cat was thought as the natural enemy to a mouse, in the Mickey cartoons, these days though, he looks more like a bulldog with that huge jaw!
Before Mr. Satan from the Dragon Ball Series, His name is Pete and this is his first apperance as a bear before the animation re-evolve him in to a cat. 4:34-Little Girl bitchslapped Pete!
@Crayshen Matting was not used in the ALICE COMEDIES. It was double printing of two film negatives. In some cartoons you can see the cartoon character pass in from of ALICE, and sometimes the white area of the character's face looks transparent when it passes in front. Only on rare occaisions would a "Hold Matte" be photographed with the animation, and this was usually at the insistence of Disney's distributor, Margaret Winkler. This was because the double printing washed out Alice.
The Elders React video points out this was censored "because the 'puzzle' was about how to get drunk during prohibition." A little bit of digging and I found another youtube clip that points out the exact scene that was censored from this version. From Wikipedia: "When Russell Merritt examined a German print of Alice Solves the Puzzle, he was surprised to find an additional scene missing from American prints. In most prints of Pete’s first scene, he is shown speeding in a boat being pulled by a pelican. He passes a police-dog, who blows a whistle and chases him. Pete simply turns and laughs. However, Merrit discovered in the German version Pete is stopped by a customs inspector who examines the boat, then lets him pass. Pete then opens the pelican’s mouth and pulls out a bottle of bootleg whiskey. This scene was cut because the Pennsylvania Censorship Board asked Disney to cut the scene during its first release. Disney then directed Winkler Studios, his distributor, to cut the scene from any further US releases." Apparently, only two frames of the deleted section still exist from the original. v=GNWG2FcqGh0
"Another one of the Alice Comedies this one introducing us to Pete for the first time. (Anthro cat nuthin' That guy is a BEAR. Ya hear me Wikipedia?)" Well in a lot (maybe most) of his other appearences - at least in Mickey and company cartoons if not in the Alice Comedies - he's more cat-like in appearence.
This was an entry in the middle of the series that ran from 19234 to 1927. It was the first series that Disney produced after arriving in Los Angeles, and was the foundation of the Disney Studio. But it was not his first work. He had come to Los Angeles after having failed as a producer in Kansas City. His very first animated cartoons were the LAUGH-O-GRAMS. Both the ALICE and LAUGH-O-GRAMS films are packaged in two very informative programs distributed by Inkwell Images.
Yup, Felix came in 1919. Disney did his laugh-o-grams with a cat that looked like Felix, and Julius was the next step. He became the real star of these shorts. Which led to a show starring a cartoon character. Didn't make sense to just have Julius (that would be a total knock-off). Thus Oswald was born. Then Mickey. =^) - TAE
What a short! looking back on it i can infer so much about his beliefs and perceptions. Amazing. SO grateful to have youtube, a platform that makes content like this accessible. What an era!
Actually, Pete used to be a bear in his first few appearances, then they changed him into a cat (which makes a better adversary for a MOUSE, don't you think?)
Thank you for posting this. I have been wanting to see this for a while. They still haven't putted this one on a Disney Treasure and I have been wanting them to. Because I love to learn about early Pete. I hope you have Alice Tin Pony.
That's mainly because Oswald was still Universal Property back then. Disney Co. just brought the rights back recently in exchange with a SportCaster. But at least we got Epic Mickey.
Mary Winkler who distibuted the Alice's Wonderland comedys also distributed Felix the cat, and asked Disney to make a similar looking cat (without being TOO close for copyright reasons). So it looks like felix on purpose, but Felix had been awhile for a little while already
@Crayshen You probably already know this by now, but Oswald is going to be an ally, although he's pretty mad at Mickey for taking his place. Oswald and Mickey work for the same goal, but Oswald hates Mickey, at least in the beginning of the story.
Given that the plot involves a coup by the 'forgotten' characters, he could very well end up being a main villain (But more than likely will be an ally, the game is going to act as his debut to a new generation and Disney won't exactly want to potray him in a negative light.) My prediction for primary antagonist? Horace. Nobody remembers him.
Unless they made some major changes to his appearance, Oriolo would freak. Especially since there's a new Felix series in the works. Oswald would be fun though. I was kinda disappointed he didn't show up in Timeless River.
Crayshen Disney’s rights to Oswald got pulled out from under him (but if that had not happened there would be no Mickey Mouse). I don’t know where Oswald’s rights are now and whether Disney can use him again.
Hmm.. Yeah to those saying the added sound just piles awkwardness on an already difficult film - hearing a cartoon cat leer 'that's some figure' at a prepubescent person is hard to take. I mean W. Disney was messed up (although not an anti-semite as some claim) enough without this shit!
the lonely youtuber Its just a later release of the film with sound added in as the original print is silent. It wasn't until 1927 when we got sound in movies at all.
You obviously have never seen "Toddlers and Tiaras" or "Honey Boo Boo". Oh and BTW, Disney has always been dark and they still are very dark. Nothing has changed, only time itself.
This honestly disturbed me so much when I saw it on TV just now... I don't know if it's just the culture we live in now or what, but the attempts to make children look attractive and whatnot back then seems way worse than what we claim to be happening today. Also, the whole impalement thing is gross... Oh, Disney, so glad you changed :P
this cartoon is ANCIENT is 100 years old begun in 1920 and ended in 1927 this is the first cartoon and cartoon series that disney ever created this is the first episode i think
Pete, the oldest recurring Disney character.
The dialog adds nothing but awkwardness. Never mess with silents.
Stephen Gilberg it sounds like Alice and Julius are being voiced by the same actor. Alice doesn’t sound like a girl at all.
Goodiesfanful they were both voiced by Walt himself
Joe plays Games So that’s Walt sounded like before his voice changed and he couldn’t voice Mickey Mouse anymore? Well, thank you for the information.
I think its ok
Concerning Pete's species, I think he's like Chowder, he some weird cross between a bear/cat/and some other things, that nobody can explain!
HCShannon yes, I could go with that.
@@Goodiesfanful I guess I could as well
Guess it's safe to say he's Chowder's real dad, and he's been quietly leaving him on read so they don't suspect a thing.
@@jayjay86443 Dad? id say great ×6ish or so grandad lol
5:22 physics don't work until you look down
wow, Pete has come a LONG way since then
Never claimed it was, just the first one with Pete in it.

Petes been causing trouble even before mickey
And before Oswald
I loved this one! And yeah, he does look like a bear and I liked the crossword puzzle at the end.
Can't wait for more!
2:10 This is Pete's first appearance
Before Mr. Satan from the Dragon Ball Series, His name is Pete and this is his first apperance as a bear before the animation re-evolve him in to a cat.
4:34-Little Girl bitchslapped Pete!
His name is Julius. Totally different cat.

wtf Pete got stuck through the back?? That looked painful af
Tia Blue I winced so hard. That had to have hurt.
Tia Blue ouch all right! I don’t know how it measured up to the standards of the time and whether people laughed or winced. But we wince at it.
Jesus. That's crazy
I love such old cartoons :)
I saw this cartoon for the first time at the German-French channel "Arte" about 6 or 7 years ago.
Pete used to be a bear, but when Mickey Mouse got released, it classified him as a cat
'Elders react to sausage party trailer' brought me here
Same xD
me too

He gets cat-like traits later on in life, but c'mon. LOOK at him in this. That tail is kind of telling don't you think?
The voices are cracking me up
The girl, Virginia Davis, died in 2009.

Wait, she claimed to need only one word, but then she wrote in two?
+Stephen Gilberg
maybe she knew one word but not the other, and she waited to write the part she already knew
It's called Matte. There's of course some information about it on the good ol' wiki.
@jeimyandjonathan
Neither does Pete in this one. Are you getting him mixed up with Julius?
Actually, Pete used to be a bear in his first few appearances, then they changed him into a cat (which makes a better adversary for a MOUSE, don't you think?)
Haha the ungodly howl Pete lets out when he falls on the giant pin. Man, you can feel that pain.
Absoloutely fascinating. Many thanks for posting.
i gtta admit,,, how they did live action mixed with animation is great for 80 years ago
Pete: The original Pedobear! LOL!
That's unfair. He only menaced the child for her rare puzzle. The cat's the real pedophile here.

Where does the soundtrack come from?
julius the cat should be in the next kingdom hearts 3.

I can see why some producers doubted the idea of feature-length animated movies after seeing some of the really old ones
This is the first cartoon where Pete apeared

@MalfoysMuppetMates Because it was hers. Simple.
pete's the cat with the peg leg and cowboy hat cuse thats what wikipedia says
He is.

old cartoons didn't really know what plot structure was did they?

Personally I find Matte more impressive than using computers.
Nope, his name's Julius. His resemblance is a marketing gimmick, copycat get it? *Is booed off stage*
This guy WAS a bear, until he was turned into a rat and then a cat. Not that complicated
Wikipedia says Pete's a "puzzle collector"... wth is that? were puzzles collectibles? I don't understand
He is a cat
Not so much. Felix's personality was pretty much set in stone by "Felix in Hollywood" which predates this by two years.
alice sounds like a man!?
Is this the original audio
Not remotely, considering you know, it was silent.
When was this audio recorded
@@theopkirby4280 Good question, I'm not sure. I'm assuming either Mintz had it done for a re-release but that's pure and utter speculation.
Huh
I do not think Mintz wanted the rerelease just hear the audio in his Oswald Cartoons
Nice and funny cartoon. But, where's Pete?
He is a bear.
Lol all this time I thought Pete was a dog, but on the wiki it said he was a bear but changed to a cat.
are you sure??whoever is 100 and something years old no??
welp *clap* im gonna rethink my life decisions
Pit gets stabbed?! What a cruel time
He was originally a bear but the eventually said he was a cat he even said he is in Mickey Mouse clubhouse

this is gross. The cartoon animal is ogling and abusing a child.
