+nuke97 That is what's so different about what you see now. Back then, even if you didn't like a band, you respected them. Now these computer composers make it so you flat out fling shit at them every chance you get.
too good - check too much to handle - check a wierdo - check (like Metallica aren't. BTW they knew each other) not famous yet - check (nor were they) looks like "all of the above" has once again won the day.
I have loved Primus as long as I've loved music! Les Claypool, and Primus are absolutely unique. Nobody sounds anything like them; a rare quality in music. They are definitely not for everybody though. But if you don't recognize their talent, you either haven't listened to them, or you wouldn't know musical talent if it crawled up your butt. "I am the Frizzle Fryyy! Yes, I am the Frizzle Fryyyyyyyy!!!"
Being a bassist myself I’m awe struck every time I hear him play.not taking anything away from Flea Steve Harris Billy Sheehan and the rest but hands down he’s(Les Claypool)the best today if not all time.simply amazing
You have to be a tireless, super fast, on time, and talented musician to keep up with Les Claypool!! I’d love to see him live someday, just haven’t had the chance yet.
Wulbulbul Lubbubwublub i think i would prefer him to start a new band really. It would be nice to hear him showcase his talent in a more technically minded band but thats just not his way!
@lancedonahue13 Herb is indeed an awesome drummer, but the drummer in this vid is Bryan Mantia. Herb played the longest with Primus, but stopped in 1995 (or 1996, not so sure), only to rejoin the band after the break in 2001 and 2003, but then stopped again and was replaced by Jay Lane, who is now still drumming for them.
wow. that tommy bass line still impresses the shit out of me 20 years later. he is the master of that bouncing slap style (marcus miller ain't half bad either! hehehehe) =]
@myke336 it's written on the head, plus the pickguard and the head shape is very specific of fender, and the buttons too but maybye i'm wrong, but i don't think so ^^
@MozezVanHelgen "say(or "so") baby do you wanna lay down with me" and some times he says "say(or "so") baby do you wanna lay down by my side" look up for the lyrics of tommy the cat ^^ cheers!
See give him a Fender Jazz bass with all the frets and he doesn't know what to do lol, so he immediately goes to his effects pedals. So shocked. This guy sux lol. Favorite bassist of the ultra-easily impressed.
In what way? You mean the way the thumb wraps over the top of the neck like that? He probably just has really big hands. Hendrix held the guitar that way, too. It's not incorrect, but it is uncomfortable for some people.
@blueblob4 Don't feel bad blueblob4, Les Claypool is the master. He is better at bass than Jordan was at basketball. There should be a music hall of fame just for Claypool!
+Ryan Barba Firstly, don't hate on a joke just because someone else says they don't like it. Don't be a sheep. You'll learn that one when you grow up. Secondly, i've been playing the bass and listening to Primus since before you were even born. Do you really think I need a douche bag like him saying 'its les claypool turd boy' and a child telling me my comment is redundant? Think again kid.
@fryBASS Yes that is what I'm saying. Rush as a "jam" band just doesn't work. It does for Primus, but not for them. But I understand any star wants to try something different now and then. Their newest record seems to be getting back to structured rock though - luckily.
Not even a solo. That’s just the way Claypool plays. In fact, it was actually kinda subdued for him (also note: not playing his solo axe). They were all raging - it was almost a Jazz duet between Claypool and that bad-ass old-school scratch DJ, the way they were passing musical ideas back and forth. And the drummer was right with him every step, too. But its an understandable mistake. Claypool not-soloing is more tripped-out than other bassists soloing.
Bizarre from the norm. But I guess the Beatles were thought of the same way initially. Although many say Les Claypool as a genius or legend, I don`t care for his type of musical expression as a singer or player. He has definite talent, I checked this out because I heard he was a monster player. Just not my type of enjoyment. Into Federico Malaman, Marcus Miller, Victor Wootan, Stanley Clarke as stand alone bass players.
No no no. He is the GOD of bass players. He makes his own style he is so baddass. You only play by the books. Les, well he managed to play an entire song with a weird guitar thing with only one string. That weird musical instrument? Well he made it...
1:44 the way he walks around the stage is god-tier
Wether you like Primus or not their skills are undeniable.
+nuke97 That is what's so different about what you see now. Back then, even if you didn't like a band, you respected them. Now these computer composers make it so you flat out fling shit at them every chance you get.
lol triggered by technology m8?
Primus sucks :D
This isn't Primus you dumb fucks.
No. It's certainly Primus.
buckethead and les claypool. what a collection of talent, showmanship, and weirdness. doesn't get much better.
he's got a chicken bucket on his head. kentucky fried. i like the extra crispy. i'll bet he's got some cole slaw in that bucket too.
I always wonder how Metallica would have turned out if Les Claypool was successful with his audition for them.
+My Urban Exploration he was successful with the audition..they said youre too good get out of here
Or just to much for them to handle.
+hi im moxygen he said that was a lie. he said they thought he was a weirdo.
+Daniel Crawford this was in like 1986, he wasn't quite famous yet
too good - check
too much to handle - check
a wierdo - check (like Metallica aren't. BTW they knew each other)
not famous yet - check (nor were they)
looks like "all of the above" has once again won the day.
Claypool's bass dance is the best rock move of all fucking time.
1:38 I cracked up when he started whispering. I fucking love claypool man.
You know its good when you see buckethead in the beggining of a video
When cocaine and bass guitars meet.
A bass guitar doesn't have a nose. [̲̅$̲̅(̲̅ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°̲̅)̲̅$̲̅]
Exactly, that's why Les has got to help it out and get it up for him, can't have a bass just laying around covered in cocaine!
JoshC NZL
He doesn't seem like a guy who's snorting coke
Gordan Bosic no he does A LOT of pot though
Theomen Kid He does?
I have loved Primus as long as I've loved music! Les Claypool, and Primus are absolutely unique. Nobody sounds anything like them; a rare quality in music. this dude is the real fucking deal, sick rhythms.
Best 2 min video on RUclips i play it in my truck loud drowns depression out pretty nice...
the Frank Zappa of bass
+Brandon Hamilton Jimi Hendrix*
+MyNameIsMud no!Zappa is better he doesnt takes any drugs xD
Atmo Namaské Neither does jimi, you know being dead and all.
EPIC WIN LOL
+Atmo Namaské But Claypool does drugs. Or did anyways.
I love making that wobbly sound with an auto-wah and muted slapping. Thanks Les!
I’d love to see him live someday, just haven’t had the chance yet.
this is on the home video Videoplasty, if you can find it. I doubt it ever saw a DVD release.
Les is a great bass player. I've never found Primus or his music to be enjoyable.
same, except for a few of their songs. his technique is really good here but i think he's wasted in this band
raimesey
yeah imagine if he was ever in GWAR!!!! it would be the rage!!
orgonko the wildly untamed lol
+raimesey In what band do you think he would fit?
Wulbulbul Lubbubwublub i think i would prefer him to start a new band really. It would be nice to hear him showcase his talent in a more technically minded band but thats just not his way!
Wtf is that DJ doing? why is he even there?? he ruins the whole shit, literally sounds like R2D2 being rapped
andre luiz this is literally the best comment I've ever heard in my life
that is so fucking hilarious when he walks/runs around like that....lol THE CLAYPOOL STRUT
Now we need to get a controlled area and test this, LET THE TESTING BEGIN.
hell yeah, check out the band that him and claypool were in if you haven't already done so, it's called C2B3
damnit this part of the song pumps me up anytime. les and that damn bass
don't trust your scouter, this one's able to hide his true power.
but his crazieness is what makes hime like the world best bass player
Dangerously delightful
!!!
@lancedonahue13 Herb is indeed an awesome drummer, but the drummer in this vid is Bryan Mantia. Funk Metal always seems to come to mind when I listen to them.
Tommy the Cat is my name, the air was thick with cat calls, no pun intended.
wow. that tommy bass line still impresses the shit out of me 20 years later. he is the master of that bouncing slap style (marcus miller ain't half bad either! hehehehe) =]
He's so good I want to cry
let's hear it for primus!!! and now the last band of the evening wild stallions!!!!
He's the coolest person ever.
Two words:
Profound talent
He is the god of bass. Im still amazed at that slap bass.
1:33 OMFG LOOOOL i love his accent there
@IrishAmerican1234 are you kiddin', it is the most famous model, fender jazz bass american standard
@myke336 it's written on the head, plus the pickguard and the head shape is very specific of fender, and the buttons too but maybye i'm wrong, but i don't think so ^^
Really weird, awesome skills. That’s what I really love about primus
Over everythings respect les!
seems rare that I've seen him jam a 4 string in his videos
Wow those fingers man, those dang fingers and a thumb
@MozezVanHelgen "say(or "so") baby do you wanna lay down with me" and some times he says "say(or "so") baby do you wanna lay down by my side" look up for the lyrics of tommy the cat ^^ cheers!
i love me some les! Les is more! Les Claypool for President!!!:)
this is the fastest tommy the cat ever
Sounds so much better :3
I can only imagine this is what Acid is like
THEY 56 PEOPLE THAT DISLIKE THIS VIDEO SHOULD BE CASTRATED! LES CLAYPOOL FOR PRESIDENT!
+Sean Edwards That's why they are already castrated...
+MrStfmg I CAN ONLY HOPE!
I didn't dislike, but Geddy is better. I'm not saying Les is bad, but Geddy's solo on time machine is 5 times better.
GOT. DAMN this dude can play
Love this. He is awesome!
Les is a machine
after this my tounge fell down on my keyboard and i cant put him back to my mouth
that mans a damn genius...all hail claypool
KILL THE DJ! Hahahah what the fuck is he doing xD
Me pareció o estaba saliendo Buckethead re duro al principio del tema ?? Ajajajaj
@drpedro98 well now they have jay lane, the ORIGINAL original drummer, so im interested to see the style changes that are gonna come with him
@2010LesPaulStudio word, it is pure happy time
So fucking talented
1:44 such a les claypool dance move :D
See give him a Fender Jazz bass with all the frets and he doesn't know what to do lol, so he immediately goes to his effects pedals. So shocked. This guy sux lol. Favorite bassist of the ultra-easily impressed.
If this is the same show I saw in Hollywood, it wasn't billed as Primus...Bucket Head and Les on the same stage!!
His left hand technique looks so uncomfortable... idk how he makes it work so well.
In what way? You mean the way the thumb wraps over the top of the neck like that? He probably just has really big hands. Hendrix held the guitar that way, too. It's not incorrect, but it is uncomfortable for some people.
He makes it work well because it's HIS technique, the one he finds comfy.
voteZDLR
he wraps his thumb round as well to mute the string, he slaps very hard and his thumb controls the string for him
The man is a giant. His hands are the size of footballs.
this may be the greatest freak musician´s party in history but i like it
I have this on VHS, its called Videoplasty
@andychristsuperstar i dunno man, i saw primus earlier this year and les still rocked pretty damn hard.
Bass god!
@MozezVanHelgen Pretty certain it's the lyrics to Tommy the Cat :p ...it's the riff from it, so that'd make sense
Let me quote Pothead at this point: "If you're so smart, why aren't you rich?!"
Is this from a specific song, or is it just a concert, spur-of-the-moment sort of thing? I wanna buy this, whether it's just the solo or a whole song.
Les Claypool s a god!
@mkarmam He is the John Myung of slap bass.
@hentajus Just a jam that leads into the ending of Tommy the Cat
@Dillbob1 it is gonna be nutso, cannot wait for vegas
Nope. The frame rate does look a little wonky since it's ripped off of a VHS, but the audio is clear enough to tell ya that it's real speed.
Les uses some sort of a Korg multi-effect pedal board. They don't sell them any more, sorry.
Les is definitely more
@blueblob4 Don't feel bad blueblob4, Les Claypool is the master. He is better at bass than Jordan was at basketball. There should be a music hall of fame just for Claypool!
¡Oh my God! ¡Fantasticular!
Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains
01:25 his slapping technique looks really good
+raimesey its Les fuckin Claypool turd boy
+Ryan Barba you don't get it do you?
+Ryan Barba the only old thing here is you old man.
+Ryan Barba *yawns*
Yay for Buckethead in the beginning :)
MORE CLAYPOOL!
@monjombe the drummer bryan mantia is mexican. but i guess so
No, he audition for metallic because he was high school friends with the guitarist but was turned down because they said he was too good- true story~
Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't solo mean alone/one? How can a solo be a solo with drums and the dude on the turntable?
@fryBASS Yes that is what I'm saying. Rush as a "jam" band just doesn't work. It does for Primus, but not for them. But I understand any star wants to try something different now and then. Their newest record seems to be getting back to structured rock though - luckily.
GOAT
I'm a fan. These guys are soo worth the listen. Take some time and do yourselves a favor to check them out. Dotto.
The DJ ruined the solo, you could barely hear the bass in most of it, Geddy Lee's solo from Time Machine is 5 times better than this.
Q-tron is Les friend
im guessing this is where buckethead got his bass solo sound from!
Give him some credit. At least he took the time to search that on Google
100% bass badassery!
Could they find a smaller stage? Maybe a few square feet of room for Les' chicken walk.
Into Federico Malaman, Marcus Miller, Victor Wootan, Stanley Clarke as stand alone bass players.
milestoneman I appreciate your assessment, even though we have different tastes. Every style is not for every person.
i think so! thats awsome
That DJ had no business being there......
He's using a lot of wah, though its really high quality effects cause I can't hear the tone of his slapping playing through the wah.
No no no. He is the GOD of bass players. He makes his own style he is so baddass. You only play by the books. Les, well he managed to play an entire song with a weird guitar thing with only one string. That weird musical instrument? Well he made it...
U guys, u can't see that a DJ can be funky too...
dtomusa74 said it all & said it right!
