- What makes a self tape stand out to the casting office? It only takes a few seconds to really grab the attention (in a good OR bad way); Arvold Casting associate Michael Duni talks with acting coach Richard Warner about how to make your self-tape's first 15 seconds the best they can be.

These are such great videos, and I so appreciate that you guys take the time to help actors present themselves. I have been doing this acting thing professionally for a looooong time, and I had never heard the note about not slating first! I always do my self-tapes as similarly as I can to what happens when I'm in studio. Blank background, good lighting, adjust cropping and angles appropriately, and slate first! Thanks for the tip. Now that you guys mentioned it, I can see how slating would be better as a button to your read. Consider the note taken. Shoot me a project, and I'll shoot you a kickin' audition slated at the end!
Please continue these great tips on acting, and the processes of the industry!
Thanks. Good info and reminders for us seasoned actors as well.
These Rock!
thank you so much for this video! i will now be making a self tape to audition for the Percy Jackson show :)
Thank you for the helpful tips! Just curious, what can you do when the sides are mainly other people having a conversation or there's some crazy action happening in the scene in the first 15+ seconds?
React! Inhabit the role and imagine how it might be shot. For a self tape audition, you're the director, lighting, set designer, wardrobe, hair, makeup, sound, and not only actor, but you have to mentally act the other parts as well. What are THEY doing? It helps to give each of the characters an appropriate eye line and block their movements in your mind. Follow them when they "move". What faces are THEY making? What is their tone? Are they a danger, or might they be in love with you? Then react!
Listen. Just really listen. That’s all
💗😇
This is confusing. I always slate first so that i remind the cd what role Im auditioning for..
they will know what role you are auditioning for ,they know the script and the dialogues ,and if they don't they can see it later ,its about grabbing their attention in the shortest time span possible,so its always better to first show your acting skills .
I see your point but I think that if you do what they they you know you shouldn't do, you could very well mess up your chance of getting booked.
Whats confusing about it? He prefaced his comments by saying "for their company". So for Arvold, the slate is last. Nothing confusing about that.
I’d be curious what you think about my self tapes. Would you evaluate?
What should you include in a slate if instructions are not provided?
