- A teenager travels back in time.
THE PASSAGE is used with permission from Fabien Montagner. Learn more at cantinaprod.com.
Faustine is a young teenage girl staying with her grandfather while her father is away working. Surly, bored and withdrawn, she doesn't engage when her grandpa tries to share their family history, but Faustine isn't interested.
Looking to get out, she takes the dog, Max, for a walk. Max runs off, and Faustine chases after him, leading her to an abandoned train station, where she encounters a strange old man. In search of Max, she enters a railroad car. But when she comes out, she's transported back in time, where she witnesses a hidden act of violence from a war she's only known from history books -- and her only hope to get back to the present comes from a past she has never really known.
Written and directed by Fabien Montagner, this thrilling, suspenseful short historical fantasy has a richness and grandeur to its storytelling, giving its short runtime the feel and fullness of a feature. Similar to its main character's journey, it transports viewers back into time, with an engrossing story, compelling performances, beautifully crafted visuals and resonant emotional themes.
This is storytelling with cinematic ambition, leveraging all the tools of the craft to create an atmosphere of mystery, enchantment, peril and excitement. The writing gives viewers exactly what they need to understand the character, with a brisk but smooth pace that flows the narrative from one key point to the next.
There's not a lot of detail in the dialogue, but the visuals -- from the detailed production design of the grandparent's home to the striking images of a modern but nondescript town -- gives us the sense of Faustine's world. Actor Cindy Colpaert's initial portrayal captures how Faustine wants nothing to do with any of it. Solitary and self-isolating, she's content with her headphones and her bedroom.
The film may begin with a vein of muted naturalism, but when Faustine wanders off to find her dog, the storytelling takes an elegantly spooky, portentous turn, its fluid camerawork and effective score creating a captivating sense of changing dimensions. From there, viewers will be hooked, as both we and Faustine witness a dark secret from her familial past. It's a tense, chilling encounter that leads to a collision between life and death -- and between the strength of the past and the hope of the future.
THE PASSAGE is a story with magic at the heart, both in its plot and in its emotional impact. The story features time travel, but it's also about family history, ancestors and the role these play in our sense of selves. Faustine is transformed by her encounter from the past, coming face to face with old traumas hidden in her personal history. But in doing so, she recovers something she didn't realize she was missing: a part of her own identity. She, too, is the continuation of a larger story -- of someone else's dreams for the future, where a family would continue to grow, evolve and flourish long past their own lifetime. Finally connected to her past, Faustine has a way forward into the future, anchored by a strong foundation of hope and love.
I didn't want this one to end ❤️! Also be kind to your grandparents...they won't be around forever! All of my grandparents passed when I was in my 20's, and I'm 37 now... would give almost anything to be able to chat, and go through picture books with them...rip.
I am fortunate to have remembered my grandparents and great grandparents; they all died before I was fifteen and before some of my siblings were born..my siblings do not remember them at all.
Some are unfortunate indeed.. to see one's grandparents is not a privilege to all.. hmm
the only grandparent i met died when i was 5 and she was 93
I'm 56 and the oldest in my family is my older brother whom just turned 61. My dad died in 1994 at 57 years old. His dad died died in 1951 at 49 of alcohol poisoning. He was a naval officer in World War 2. His dad died at 39 in World War 1.
I one hundred percent agree with this person. During my genealogy research, getting to know their movements, you get close with them in a strange way that puts you in the living room assuming their thoughts with 100's of questions always asking "WHY?".
If I had a wish, it would be to go back or forward a century to be with relatives. I too lost my grands at a young age. I'm sorry for your lost so young.
Other than being a short film, I think it was expertly done! Plot, storyline, character actors, scenery, etc. What a lovely experience. Thank you!
That was good, but way too short. Stunning actress.
I absolutely loved this! Only wish it were longer! A lot longer actually! Full feature film length.
From start to finish (which I found I didn’t want), was a great production! A great cast. Both time eras. I loved! Well done, to all involved👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
My Grandpa raised me. He passed when I was 19. I miss him so much💔
My eyes filled up when she hugged her grandfather & he said, "shhh...I'm here with you now."
Beautiful story!
Mine too!
TIME TRAVEL? SPIRIT MEETING? REINCARNATION? MAX?
A somewhat confusing plot, story and passage. It is not clear why the story writer resorted to the implausible literary devices of so-called time travel (travel out of time) and paranormal spirit meeting to arrange for Faustine, a neglected teen, to discover that her paternal grandmother had been murdered by one of two German soldiers in WW2. Nor is it clear why apparently one of the two German soldiers who was still living in 1989 and owned German Shepard dogs and not French poodles, recognized that "She is you, and you are her", implying that Faustine (a teen in 1989) and her paternal grandmother (middle-aged and killed during WW2 before 1945) are one and the same person separated by 44 years from 1945 to 1989, which meant that the grandmother must have reincarnated as Faustine. It is not clear exactly what kind of passage occurred in the story. Peace.
Exactly! These were my thoughts too...very confusing indeed
Thanks. I thought I was the only one.
im my own grandma 😺...
If I understand correctly, he is the soldier that pleaded not to kill the woman. He recognized her as the girl who witnessed and whom they were chasing.
@@MrJohnnysaintjohn Thank you. This makes sense and may have answered my questions as to who the old man was.
Grandpa is a part of Faustine's world. I would like to have such a granddaughter. (Her name remember me of Goethe's Faust.)
Now that was a good story. Did not understand a word of it, but this was made so well that I did not have to understand french to enjoy it.
It had built in English subs though...

A Wonderful Tale!
Wow this was amazingly beautiful.
- Very well done! I really enjoyed this!!
Love that ending ♥
Who was the old man near the trains and was he a relation of hers? Beautiful movie.
I think that he was one of the Germans. Not the one who shot her great grandmother but the other one.
I think he was one of the Germans. NOT the one who shot her but the one who shot her grandmother
I also think that was the german soldier who was not as bad as the one who kills the grand mother.
@@olivier-pierredebelmont.3630 But he spoke French which threw me.

One of the ones which I wish was a full length movie...
Compared to the other time travel/paradox films I've watched from this channel, this one is underwhelming.
Quelle belle histoire! 😀
I have to admit, these is a good one.
Love it.
I am so confused. I watched it and I don’t understand anything about it.
Max!!
This was a good movie. Thanks.
I was totally confused, the plot seems unnecessarily complicated.
This is what can happen when you go outside. Just stay home.
Un tres bon film....merci pour la partage....
I don’t understand the man at the train station or why he recognized her, can someone explain this?
Man if I were the one in the movie being subject to those turds threatening to shoot the woman I would have gone ballistic on their arses. Instead of open women season I'd make it open men season.
Roll up your sleeves, MIchael, and have at it... you badass keyboard warrior, you.
I love these French films.
Which ones, Jeremy...?
@@jimreadey4837 Sorry but I have seen so many it is hard to name the individual but the first French film I watched when I was a boy was a film as a boy it was called Les Bicyclettes de Belsize I just found French films fascinating ever since. They
not bad ...
goof: the rifles the two WWII soldiers have are from WWI era ... German soldiers had much more advanced J-3 rifles in WWII ...
yes but who was the woman who was shot??
Her grandmother.
Some one please explain 😢
It's about a girl who goes running after her dog.
You're gonna get a lot of hate for asking something like that, brother. Believe me, I've experienced it firsthand.
She feels as kind of abandoned by parents and isolated herself from life. Grandfather tries to help her, wanna show her he cares her and will aid her always. But she is naive yet to understand. So her death grandmother's soul has decided to help her...
@@adamkeane2622 pain is inevitable, but clarity brings peace and empathy 🧔🏻
@@cyranodebergerac7962 thanks for the explanation ✌🏻
Who plays Fraustine?
Bonjour bonappetite
🔵 I still don't understand who the Elder yardman was?.... how did he know her?
he was/is the german soldier who killed her grandmother
@@danielschulze1101 he was the other one
@@danielschulze1101 I don't think they killed her though. When the girl and her are walking through the woods together, sure I guess that's the grandma's spirit (near death experience, maybe?), but look at her forehead ... no bullet wound. But in the photo of her in the album, there's a dark spot on her forehead from the bullet, though. That implies the photo was taken after she was shot. I think they shot her, but she lived, got married, and had a kid, eventually who had a child (the granddaughter). I'm guessing she helped her grandkid while having a near-death experience, but then survived and went on to have her life of raising her son and making leek soup for grandpa.
Damn you,@@xzonia1... you're making me go back and watch again. (Seriously, though... thanks for the insight.)

You've never heard French before?
That's kind of a strange.....it’s kinda the atmosphere of the second world war but then the girl is dressing like in this times. I am confused, but ok I didn't turn the subtitles on. I don't know. Maybe someone can explain me.....
Just why do you suppose they use subtitles? Watch again and read the damn words!
@@sunwarrior88 and I commented on this right at the beginning then I realized that it’s like a “time travel” situation...or the style of storytelling is that she goes back to this time(the war) and that's the reason why she looks the way she does. Sorry! I didn't mean to offend anyone
have you never seen something like the Twilight Zone where there is time travel or ghosts or something else not quite of this world?
Magnificent/Magnifique!
A reminder: We may not be interested in the terrible parts of history - but they may be interested in us.
Love it.
Wouldn't it heal the world if we all had someone older and wiser envelope us in a loving embrace, and say, "Quiet, I am here with you"?
Oh my. This short film was brilliant and extraordinary. Bravo! ...The creators and performers in this film were magnificent. ...I also had a wonderful loving grandfather who loved and saw after my brother and me as children while our parents were working. He spoiled us and was the center of our world in so many ways. He was fun and musical playing the French harp and the banjo and would teach me little jigs to dance when I was a kid. I miss him to this very day. He and my parents and brother have long been in Eternity but their memories and the deep spirit of how we all loved each other remains. It's also interesting to note that I am in part of German Jewish heritage on my father's side of the family. This short film touched me on many levels. Thank you for offering it to the world to see and experience.
This was definitely one of the better Omeleto presentations and was an excellent film; story line, cinematography, and with very good acting by all concerned...the young French girl was stunning.
@Nathaniel Luis Reyhan Soesilo ...because they're speaking French...?
cindy colpaert
The soundtrack really sets the mood honestly
WOW, I really didn't want that to end. What a beautiful, horrible story but so well told!
When do we get episode two? She should get to know her grandmother. What is the old guy's connection to her? Why was she killed and what happened to the family after they found her shot? Oh My Gosh.... I need more.
All the answers to your questions will have to be filled in by your imagination and perhaps a rewatching. These Omeleto films always need repeated viewings to get the clues.
the old guy is one of the soldiers
@@artisticallyconfucious wow, I watched this over a year ago and still wanting more.

@@adamkeane2622 What a weird comment to make.
@@riseALK I was being ironically sarcastic, that's all.
@Olivier-Pierre de Belmont I agree, I think the old man near the train was the "good" solider as he lapsed into German and then back into French when she came out of the train.
@@adamkeane2622 oh sorry,sometimes I forget that!
Such a amazing modern fairy tale with nice themes. Photo is splendid.
Wow, that's exactly how I hoped this would end. I love how the roles are reversed - it starts with him being sweet and her being a typical teenager. At the end he is cross because he is worried for her, but her experience flips the script and she is the sweet one. Loved this short, lots of emotions.
Time travel, WWII and old abandoned train stations...Ok, that´s a very very cheap way to get me...I LOVED IT!!!
I typically dislike time travel stories. I was quite surprised at this one. Well written, acted and edited.
6:39 Predator cameo. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
hahahaahahah wtf you are right thats awesome
I like the way she says Max-A
I wish I could see my grandparents again, iv not been allowed near them since about 2 years before covid and have been told I'll only be able to see them again at their funeral if they have an open casket.
Assuming this is 2010 to 2021....The timeline is off. In 1944, if Grandma is 24, Grandpa is the same and Dad is already born; than in 2014 Grandpa would be 94!
Her dad was already born, he would be 70 at the youngest. This film should have been about her great grand parents
0:55 it is actually set in 24th Oct 1989
So the Grandpa's age will be 69 years and the Dad's age should be 45 years
@@RichSteve99 Thank You! I missed that! I stand corrected 🤦🏻♀️
Magically captivating! I'm watching it again after a cup of hot tea.
great acting by young girl
A thought provoking film- excellent!
I love this
Thank you Omeleto, for bringing us the best films.
For some reason I didn't like this one, maybe because it's too predictable, when I saw the old man saying she looked like someone he knew, I already knew she was going to go back in the past and interact with him, and that's exactly what happened.
so she died but then Walking Dead'd up on the lil girl?? also, why did she say they killed her dog, nothing happened to him as far as she saw. ?! weird, man.
She kept the dog on such a tight lead and he got away. Yeah, okay . That bothered me.
Bravo I loved this!
A quietly disturbing though beautiful little film .

She went back into time and watched the murder of her grandmother. The grandmother in ghostly form, led her back to the present. She did not know the woman was her grandmother until she saw the album and hugged her grandfather because she saw his tragedy and finally saw him as a person and not an old man that didn't understand her and bridged the distance between each other.
