Here in Texas we were taught to put the supers back on the hive, in the evening, for at least one night, after harvesting the honey, so that the bees can clean out the remainder of the honey from the comb.
That works 👍 However I just look at being efficient so for me once their off, I'll freeze them and store them so I do not have to go back and put them on and then later go back and take them off.
Good stuff, also all the drones that get kicked out of the hive in the fall and the last summer bees that die after their 45 days will help reduce the hives size significantly.
Here in Texas, I always put the super back on for cleanup, and but also in case the bees continue to bring in nectar, which was the case this year. My flow inexplicably went until the first week of August after a very rainy spring with constant nectar washouts. I also like to leave a super on through dearth so I dont have to store it before the fall flow is over.
When I harvest multiple supers off a hive at once, the Bee's seem to do just fine with the less space of my remaining single deep. Those that need more space, beard on the front. I return the wet supers asap for repair and the next flow. The last harvest in October I empty the supers and put them out to bee cleaned up by the Bee's and when dry I stack them in the barn. I have never had an insect issue, as theres nothing left for them. If I see small hive beetle larvae upon harvesting, I pick them out one by one or freeze that particular frame, then spin it once thawed. I overwinter in single deeps, and they emerge from winter bursting, and havent lost a hive in years.
@@beek hey if your pockets are that deep fill your boots i go into winter with very big populations but im not burning threw that much food and i get -10 to -20 winters -30 with wind my doubles never eat all there food now i use all poly hives maybe thats the diff
Aug 20 today and I extracted a week ago. The number were already decreasing significantly. Running 50+ hives in Michigan, I removed all honey supers from all but 2 hives. Those hives had brood in the honey supers. Now, a week later the bearding has slowed for the most part.
Hi David, I have 5 hives. 2 I purchased and 3 are swarms I've caught. One of the swarms will not go into the bottom box. No other hives do this so it seems odd. I don't see any bugs or anything weird. So you think there's a reason for this behavior? Thank you for all your videos.
is there old comb in that bottom box? One of my hives (first year with this hive, got a new package this year), doesnt like working with frames that have 2-3 year old comb on it
How long do you leave processed supers on the hives? I don’t want to promote swarming through the months of august - October. I’m currently running two deeps, two supers - it was a good season!
as someone looking into beekeeping next spring this channel has been a godsend! such a fascinating hobby. I'm hoping to attend an event where i can shadow a beekeeper to learn more
Thanks for watching and I'm glad my channel is helpful for you. Our livestreams on Thursday night might be a great place where you can interact with beekeepers and ask your questions. Here's the link: www.honeybeesonline.com/live
I have 2 deep boxes. I checked my bees and found leave, capped brood, some newly hatched bees, and my queen in the bottom deep box. In the top deep box, I found spotty capped brood l, but most of the entire top box was honey. This is my first year. Do they need that much honey for the winter?
Really depends on where you live on the planet. Here in Illinois we need about 60-80 pounds of honey on the hive to get them through winter unless you choose to feed them.
@beek I always enjoy your videos. Watching your videos puts so much perspective into my beekeeping journey. Going into fall is a little stressful for a first year beek like myself and watching the calm and intentional way you manage your hives transcends in the way I critique myself in my journey. Much love to Sheri and yourself and thank you.
David what would you do if you were working with two deeps the same size the large ones and two honey supers on top would you remove the two honey supers and leave them off or would you keep one on Because I do have quite a bit of honey in the double deeps thank you Charlie PA
Hello David, I put on my robber screen last night now I have a big ball of bees hanging off my screen bottom. 60 degrees last two nights. Any ideas. Thank you
Hello Dave, have an idea on storage on supers why is there no hover storage bags where you normally put clothes in then add the nozzle of the vacuum cleaner on the bag which sucks the air out. why not have a super box size bag you can put a complete box super in?
First time beekeeper. I'm hoping you can give me your 2 cents on this. I haven't put eyes on my queen for about 7-10 days. I checked today and there are some capped brood, very little larvae, and I think very few eggs. My eyes aren't great at detecting eggs. There are frames with nectar, pollen and capped honey in corner of some frames. Small hive beetles are not a problem now, ever since I have been putting peppermint candy in corner of frames. I have treated with oxalic vapor this summer and apitablets in June. What should I do now. I'm worried my queen is failing or gone. Last week I found two cells that looked like queen but I think they are drone because they are horizontal on frame.
What about if you have multiple partially capped / filled supers. I gave them extra boxes to get comb drawn this year - now I have say 2 partials that are too wet to extract and in a dearth now. Don’t have enough room to freeze 6 mediums
I’m new to bee keeping I have a hive that is super aggressive compared to my 3 other hives it was a bee swarm catch what can I do ? “ Busy Bees of the Bluegrass”
Someone recently forwarded me an article from 2012 that talked about a beekeeper who went into his hives and was shocked and confused to find red and blue comb being built by the bees. After a little bit of research he discovered they were visiting a nearby Hershey chocolate factory where M&M's were being made.
However, I want to treat for fall mites after pulling the supers. That puts me in a bind if I put any of them back on since I don't want to get the treatment into my top supers
I pull all my supers the first week of September to do my second mite treatment. I have all single deeps with 1 super over winter. I have found a single and a deep at that time of year is enough room and they will consolidate and figure it out just fine.
If you have more than one hive, you could put the drawn super on another hive for a few weeks while you treat for mites, then put it back on the original hive. Otherwise you might need to freeze the super for a few weeks, then bring it back to the hive.
David ..Help! In my beehive..lower hive.. my mistake and I take full responsibility.. there is only 8 frames in it when there should be 10, .. and now obviously it's a nightmare in there.. please David or anyone out there! What do I do to repair?? Northern California.
It might be best not to disturb it especially if the two frames are brood frames. During the winter the bees will likely move up out of the lower deep and in later winter with little resources or bees on it you can remove it and place in frames.
Hi Dave I am new at beekeeping and I have a wonderful mentor to help me my oldest son he's been in business for 12 years we just pulled our first honey this is my second year of bees drawn out frames for 72 hours then I put them in a clear plastic bag seal them up really really tight then I put them in a clear plastic container everything I have read says that wax moths do not like they are in up do you think this will work my son goes with the dark plastic bags and

I bought a deep freezer this year to store frames in over the winter. I'm in it to win it!!
I just replace frame for frame and put the capped honey in a nuc box I use as a transport box but I’m new and don’t have a ton of hives.
Thank you. I hope my bees can over winter. Now I'm thinking about the 40 Plus days 🤔 of bee life.
Often times I'll use the last excess supers to balance out winter feed for weaker colonies
Good stuff, also all the drones that get kicked out of the hive in the fall and the last summer bees that die after their 45 days will help reduce the hives size significantly.

Why would you skip freezing? All it takes is a couple eggs and you've got waxmoths in there
I usually freeze my supers a couple of days before I store them.
@@beek At about 9 minutes you talked about skipping freezing sometimes if you "look at it and can tell it looks good"
You winter with 2 deeps and a super and a candy board your burning threw a hell of alote of food and I’m pretty sure I’m way colder then you
I love this because I come out of winter with so many bees, such strong colonies.

Question. If you do not remove supers do bees self regulate population? Or does that cause swarming? Thanks for videos

Do you leave the frames in the super you leave and is there honey left in the frames for the Bees

You’ll need to inspect once a week for two weeks to verify you have a good laying queen. If not you’ll need to purchase one ASAP.

Easiest thing is to requeen them.

I would never place my extracted honey supers into bags for storage. It increases the risk mold and mildew.
