Almost impossible to find good clothing like this for a reasonable price. Seems one have to make them one self. This looks really good. A tube for the face built in to the hood is also great.
Good job! People complain about price on a lot of stuff like this, but good materials aren't cheap, and it takes time and skill to make the garment. I also recommend that book for any outdoors person to have in the library - even if you think you know everything, you just might not. Also, it's good to 'preserve knowledge' for others who may need it in the near future. ATB from New England.
I have a lot of respect for you and what you do, especially since there is not too many women on youtube doing this and most are male. You are a true inspiration to other women out there (myself included) who has a tendency to want to live this kind of lifestyle. Again Thank you for what you do and please continue to post vids.
Thank you very much. This comment made my night. I hope that I can inspire even one person to go out and try something different related to the outdoors. Have a wonderful weekend!!
That is so beautiful. Being from Minnesota, I would wear that every day in winter. They cost $390 U.S. from Duluth Pack. I trust their quality but it is unaffordable for the average person.
They are very pricey. Making one I know why now. It was a bit over $200 CDN in materials. The labour would make it up to $400 CDN if I was to sell one in canada.
So happy to have found your channel. My 9 year old daughter and I are both making tradition anoraks this month. We are 100% food self sufficient now we need to work on clothing self sufficiency. For now we will use Military Surplus wool Blankets but in the spring we will have our own sheep and be able to shear for wool. Add that to National hide we are set. Cant wait to learn more from you.
Wow Jen, thanks for the heads up on the book it's on order and thanks so much for sharing. I now know what I will be doing in October ready for this winter. Enjoyed this content.
You're welcome! You are really going to like this book. Lots of great info. Right now I'm in the midst of making the snowshoe moccasins mentioned in the book.
W 0 W, Jen; That's a wonderful job on a very functional piece of gear. Bravo & Double High-5 & Double Thumbs Up as well. Stay-Frosty Friend ATB Terry God Bless
I watched this video a year ago. I had made a hand sewn wool blanket anorak. Turned out ugly but I love it. Since then, I bought a machine or two. Have made a few and would love to send photos of my renderings. Not as polished as yours but they do well.
Thanks Colin. It gets exciting as you move on with the project. At first it was very intimidating but got better as I went along. I learned a lot with this project.
Good video, really helped figure out the welt pockets. Unfortunately the book says to cut the lines first if I'm not mistaken. This made me have some corner bunching problems. Had to iron it a lot to make it look decent
Thanks for your thorough guidance through this project! How heavy (g/m2) is the canvas fabric you're using here and how many meters did you start out with?
Wow, what a great video. I have read the Conover's book and it is a wealth of useful information. Now I have been going through some of your videos and they too are packed with fun stuff. Thanks !
Great channel. I looked in one or two of your videos and I like Canada and girls, who enjoy the outdoors and bushcraft and know how to diy, so I subbed ; ) All the best from Germany, Maximilian.
Excellent video, very nicely done. Your work is beautiful, quite impressive!! Thanks so much for sharing. Never done any sewing before, but I'm inspired to buy the book.... and who knows. Wonderful job !!! Best wishes..... Ax
So glad you enjoyed it. I've never made one with wool but here is a link to a pattern and DIY as to how to make one: m.outdoorrevival.com/instant-articles/wool-blanket-anorak-make-easy-steps.html
Great job, I love it ! How long did it take you all together to make the anorak? I would like to make one my self, but don't have no sewing machine skills. Did you learn to use it by yourself?
Can you tell me what ounce canvas you use and where you purchased it from? It seems like a very sleek material. I'm using 7 oz. duck canvas but it has a rougher feel.
Two years down the road, but this is a timeless video. Thanks for all the detail. I just received The Snow Walker's Companion the other day and was kind of mystified by that pattern. My issue is that I am much larger than a men's medium and need to scale up to an XL (115 KG and 195 CM tall). Alexandra does not know how to do it. Any ideas? Also, what kind of fabric did you use? I think that this pattern is made for a lighter weight cotton cloth since it uses double layers. They mention a 4.5 ounce Egyptian cotton as a great fabric for tents and anoraks and they bought 100 yards to "last them a lifetime". I bought 13 yards of 10 ounce cotton canvas duck cloth to make mine and I think it would be too heavy if I doubled it with a liner layer. I also ordered the Anorak kit from Lure of the North which will come with precut pieces for an XL anorak, but from their detailed instructions their take on the anorak is different from the one you made even though they say it's based off the Conover model. They do not have the cool double pocket but I may incorporate that into their anorak.
I used the heaviest cotton I could find at Fabricland. I couldn't find Egyptian cotton. It is still quite a heavy anorak. I had to adjust my pattern to make it smaller for me. I just went by experience. You could add a few inches all around in dimension and do a test fit and pin before sewing.
Cool. Thanks for the reply. I ended up getting a kit from Lure of the North. Turned out really nice. You can see it on my Instagram feed: @mitchellhamm
@faultroy I highly recommend their kit. It was pre-shrunk, accurately cut and if you followed the directions in their PDF not terribly hard to assemble. It did take quite a few hours to do, but I feel I learned a lot by taking that time. I did add the welt pockets like the Yam does in this video and think it's a good addition to be able to reach through to your underlayers. The things I would do differently is attach the ruff with Velcro versus sewing it on. That makes it much easier to clean the anorak. I would also put some small pockets inside the big kangaroo pocket for keys, wallet, small knife, and sew some lanyards under the arms to clip mittens to. It was generously sized, but with my thick Lester River Bushcraft wool anorak underneath it's about perfect. I also made some winter mocassins from their instructions, but did not buy the kit since I had plenty of material. They turned out nice, too.No clue on the yardage required. I did trace all the pattern pieces in case I wanted to make another.
WOW! A reason to message you. How much material did you use to make your anaorak? is that info in the book. I'd like to make one, not sure it would be as good as yours. I have watched your channel many times. Very informative, thanks.
Thank you! All the details are found within the book. I did some minor adjustments to the pattern to make it fit me better. I highly recommend the book for the detailed info on how to make this anorak. Also, there are plans for canvas tents, moccasins, gaiters, etc! Also, lots of good stuff in there about Winter camping.
Nope no professional. I have lots of sewing experience though. Heck, I even sewed my own wedding dress. LOL. No worries, lots of guys watched this and actually sew but don't tell anyone about it.
Thank you! Since the materials used are dependent on the pattern size, I recommend you order the book to get all the info on how to make it: www.canadianoutdoorequipment.com/snow-walkers-companion.html I used heavy cotton for the shell and sash, medium weight interfacing, leather cord for the drawstring, several types of wooden buttons (of my own choosing), ribbon, double fold extrawide bias tape and hem tape . I did some modifications from the pattern so my exact amount of materials may not make sense if you were to make it.
the anorak itself is beautiful but, more than just that, i absolutely LOVE the little attention to details you did. GREAT JOB!!!
Well thank you!
This project is completely amazing. Whole new appreciation for sewer-peoples!
Thanks Michael! Oh, and I sent some stickers your way last week.

Hi there, what material did you use to make your anorak.
Hope you pre soaked the bias tape. Wouldn't want it to bleed on the beige when washed .
It's been washed a lot. Doesn't bleed

so very cool
