Larian is so good at the animal dialogue. It genuinely sounds like the thoughts of an animal while being absolutely hilarious writing and voice acting.
The funny thing is that is extremely common in the animal kingdom and even humans did stuff like that in the past. Turns out that what we often consider "Animalistic" or "Monstrous" is actually quite normal and often more sane then we realize when you don't have houses to hide in and guns to use.

You can also speak with the spider under the goblin castle on act 1, and convince them that Goblins are delicious for some extra muscle if you're going to attack them, or just for fun because they will not trigger hostile if you do it, they are their own team.

First time watching this spell work on "His Majesty", he immediately reminded me of the famous talking black cat that was Salem Saberhagen who was voived by Nick Bakay in Sabrina the Teenage Witch and its animated series.
My main is a Druid so I've been talking to every animal in game. I tried another class and party that didn't have it...Playing without Speak with Animals feels like an entirely different game.
Warlock is perfect. You only ever use 2 spell in fights: eldritch blast and EX. So first boons are agonizing blast and speak with animals, second repelling blast, with pact of the book you get speak with the dead, if eldritch entity is your patron you can read minds. And since all abilities come from Charisma i slay in both persuasion and combat. purrfect.
So you're telling me he had those in handy and still decided to interview a bear without drinking one? What a loon. Glad I didn't let him stick a needle in my eyehole
It's amazing how a whole line of characters can be missed simply because you chose a non-magic playthrough and didn't bother with scrolls that let you talk to them. Best part is, the animals are literally everywhere. You could do a whole run as a druid who attacks everyone on site and only makes friends with animals lol.
I literally take ritual magician as my 4th level feat so I can grab this spell. It's so much fun. It's a shame speak with the dead isn't as good. But then again if you could speak with EVERY corpse it would be kinda .. impossible to do.
A tip: if you want to speak to someone you killed, use Disguise Self. People you've killed refuse to talk to you because they recognize you as their killer, however if you have Disguise Self active, they won't recognize you, and so they'll be willing to talk to you.
The only other game I've seen that gives you a spell to speak with the dead is Arcanum and it trivialized quite a few quests. I wish more games did that.
I also believe Speak with the Dead is another must-have spell. Even though you have limited questions to ask before the spell wears off. You can get some lore out of them sometimes whenever it's important or not.
Well for a "normal game" you expect one or two extra options but in bg3 if they get you an option they fucing go all out and i mean it: they made every fucing animal speak, the same with the dead. Truly majestical: on a good RPG you may want to try out different approaches to a problem but here... there are literally no boundaries on how you want to address the problem!
Because if you've ever played a Larian game you know that even just the *hints* animals can give you are incredibly helpful, and that's before you get into how they can sometimes either be integral to quests or be quest givers themselves
Once I started using this spell or potions to give me the ability, I realized how helpful this ability is for your character, and the lengths that Larian went to with their voice acting.
When you start looking into every bit of detail the devs have put in. Details that aren't necessary at all for the game to work, but add that extra layer of immersion and fun. You have to give it to Larian studios... Slow clap 👏 for them
As someone who plays a fairy druid in D&D, Speak With Animals has actually helped us out considerably with quests and situations. Highly recommend this spell! Nice to see that it helps in the game, too. Can't wait to get this game for the PS5.
There are even Speak With Animals potions lying around, if you either didn't spec for SWA (Bard, Nature Cleric, Druid, Ranger) or if your perfect squad doesn't include Wyll (who can get Beast Speech) or Halsin (who has SWA as a Druid spell).
My only complaint with this spell is that I wish you could use it to talk to a wizard familiar, or a Beastmaster Ranger animal companion. that would be cool.
I was very disappointed that we couldn't even talk to the Imps or Quasit Pact of the Chain familiars. The game does such a delightful job that missing this, along with being able to communicate with / pet your Beastmaster companions, seemed an odd oversight.
Wizard familiars, imps and quasits are not animals though. They are spirits that just happen to take that form. It's not a mistake, it's true to the rules. Beastmaster companion is a different thing though.
The bear Volo is talking to has another interaction immediately after if you talk to him again! He complains and asks why can't Volo understand him when you and the druids all can. He then repeats slowly, like he did before, about how he's come from far away and then smiles and does a couple of nods.
This is the exact reason I gave Gale magic initiate as soon as possible. Somewhere at the druid's grove I realised that nobody in my party can actually speak with animals or save me from my terrible luck with guidance. The luck could be savescummed away, however unpleasant that might be, but speaking with animals was irreplaceable, especially because I absolutely love the animals' outlook on the world and the dialogue.

My main is a Druid so I've been talking to every animal in game.
I tried another class and party that didn't have it...Playing without Speak with Animals feels like an entirely different game.
You can take it on wyll or karlach, since wyll starts with 17 cha I take it on him as it helps with persuation and deception checks on animals.
Just buy potions
They are cheap
Wildheart Barbarian also gets it for free!
Grabbed it on my fey patron warlock as one of my first invocations.
Every long rest first thing, speak with animals, pet the dog.
Warlock is perfect. You only ever use 2 spell in fights: eldritch blast and EX.
So first boons are agonizing blast and speak with animals, second repelling blast, with pact of the book you get speak with the dead, if eldritch entity is your patron you can read minds. And since all abilities come from Charisma i slay in both persuasion and combat. purrfect.
talking people to death
Talking to that cat made me love the game even more
fun fact: astarion approves of every dialogue choice in his majesty’s interaction.
The dialogue cutscenes are so pretty and then it switches to the third person top down view where you can barely see any detail at all.
Honestly really glad I took Beast Speech as an invocation early. Animals are just other NPCs now. It's fun
Also scratch is the goodest of bois
For those who don't know, Volo has speak with animals potions for sale, and those last until you long rest
So you're telling me he had those in handy and still decided to interview a bear without drinking one? What a loon. Glad I didn't let him stick a needle in my eyehole
This was where i learned that Astarion likes cats :D He had an approve + when i talked to the cat and once more when i admired His Majesty :D
Astarion is like cat himself
Speak with animals, speak with the dead from thay book, disguise self, and detect thoughts are all must haves
12/10 best game ever.... you know sometimes when we wait really long, a good game shows up afterall
It's amazing how a whole line of characters can be missed simply because you chose a non-magic playthrough and didn't bother with scrolls that let you talk to them. Best part is, the animals are literally everywhere. You could do a whole run as a druid who attacks everyone on site and only makes friends with animals lol.
That cat in particular was just PRICELESS to me 😂❤
Dude, this might be the whole reason I actually get this game.
How the hell do they have cat interactions down to a T in literally the first minute of speaking to them. How dedicated were these devs?!?
Nah the guy who voiced the cat enjoyed that waaay too much 😂😂😂
I literally take ritual magician as my 4th level feat so I can grab this spell. It's so much fun. It's a shame speak with the dead isn't as good. But then again if you could speak with EVERY corpse it would be kinda .. impossible to do.
If you want to speak to every corpse you should play OS2
A tip: if you want to speak to someone you killed, use Disguise Self. People you've killed refuse to talk to you because they recognize you as their killer, however if you have Disguise Self active, they won't recognize you, and so they'll be willing to talk to you.
The only other game I've seen that gives you a spell to speak with the dead is Arcanum and it trivialized quite a few quests.
I wish more games did that.
It was VERY difficult to not steal the milk from the ritual in order to give it to His Majesty.
2:51 Watch out! That ox has a knife!
Can you imagine if Larian actually went so far as if you cast speak with dead and speak with plants, you could talk to furniture.....
As a DM I hate this take becuase I KNOW my players will try to talk to every single fucking chair possible.
@@MythicMachinasounds like a slippery slope to some kinky stuff
I've encountered two hairless cats in this game so far, and they're both voice acted immaculately.
The strange ox in the druid grove is my favorite speak with animals target thus far.
moo
The fact that they spent the time to do this is incredible.
4:00 I really didn't expect this one cave goat to be one of the best conversations in the game, but here we are
I also believe Speak with the Dead is another must-have spell. Even though you have limited questions to ask before the spell wears off. You can get some lore out of them sometimes whenever it's important or not.
Just remember not to use that spell with the person WHO KILLED the dead person you want to speak to! I always seem to do that mistake lol!
Everything I've seen so far about this game's dialogues is so much funn, I'm loving it so much. Can't wait to play 😂
I freed a giant spider from a cage and used the spell on him and he screamed "FREEDOM!!!"
I wish stuff like this existed in real life, I would be great to be able to talk to animals and organize with them better~
“Hissss I say, Hissss!”
This line has convinced me to purchase this game
I cannot say enough how perfect the owlbear is. Menacing, cruel but not in an evil way. Definitely dangerous.
HISS! I say: HISS! My absolute favourite line in the game
Yup. this is me. Just gathering an army of animals. And talking to'em.
Because if you've ever played a Larian game you know that even just the *hints* animals can give you are incredibly helpful, and that's before you get into how they can sometimes either be integral to quests or be quest givers themselves
Dogs: These beings feed me and give me shelter! They must be gods!
Cats: These beings feed me and give me shelter. I must be a god.
the frog has different dialogue and is celebrating after you kill that old lady who's the monster thingy, and it takes you to treasure
I LOVE when my players pop Speak w Animals at weird times! You just have to reward the creativity!
Once I started using this spell or potions to give me the ability, I realized how helpful this ability is for your character, and the lengths that Larian went to with their voice acting.
The music in the background with the ox was a really good choice.
I never leave camp without this spell. Talking to animals is one of my favorite features.
does anyone else also switch to their main character when starting any dialogue even if they don't have the best stats for the checks
Agreed. It was one of the first spells I pick up in my Ranger playthrough.
Voice director : You're voicing a cat.
Voice actor : Well sure my good sir !
When you start looking into every bit of detail the devs have put in. Details that aren't necessary at all for the game to work, but add that extra layer of immersion and fun.
You have to give it to Larian studios... Slow clap 👏 for them
Wow… they have cutscene dialogue and animations JUST in case you save both dog and owlbear. 3 playthrought idk how I miss that but damn
As someone who plays a fairy druid in D&D, Speak With Animals has actually helped us out considerably with quests and situations. Highly recommend this spell! Nice to see that it helps in the game, too. Can't wait to get this game for the PS5.
There’s a fairy class option?
@@Batzy8 There was in our session! We used Foundry and it was listed as an option I could play.
@@pixiethebug omggg that’s so cool. I need this game 🥹🥹
that is the most fitting voice for a cat ever
There are even Speak With Animals potions lying around, if you either didn't spec for SWA (Bard, Nature Cleric, Druid, Ranger) or if your perfect squad doesn't include Wyll (who can get Beast Speech) or Halsin (who has SWA as a Druid spell).
THAT OWLBEAR CUB ATE SCRATCH ON MY PLAYTHROUGH!!
That Owlbear cub is the cutest thing i've ever seen
The strange ox is literally the talking cat from Rick and Morty.
This is a lesson you learned back in DOS2
Speak with animals is 90|% of the reason I multiclassed into bard.
Its all fun and games until you fight the owlbear with speak with animals and see what happens. Broke my heart, had to restart my playthrough
I hope they add His Majesty as a recruitable pet at some point...
Because the familiars aren't actually animals, they're fey spirits in the shape of animals.
The ranger companion I don't have an explanation for.
Wizard familiars, imps and quasits are not animals though. They are spirits that just happen to take that form. It's not a mistake, it's true to the rules. Beastmaster companion is a different thing though.
@@faselfasel2864 Aren't the Beastmaster companions fey bound in the shape of an animal?
@@DreamersOfReality No, they are actual physical animals that need healing/food/rest etc.
The Dreaded Frog... *PTSD Intensified!*
