    My wife Rose N9MK and I W9MSM went through the 5 levels back then as a competition to see who will be an extra class first. I won with her just a couple months away. I let Ham slip away for over 15 years but kept our lic. up to date. I'm on fire once again and gleaning a new set of knowledge available.

    After doing some research on taking exams online, I think I'll just find an in-person exam in my area. The ARRL is obviously not set up for online exams. The current setup is over Zoom and the requirements are pretty stringent. I got a masters degree online and it was much simpler than the setup they provide. Maybe the whole Covid thing will spur them to get with the times with regard to online testing.

      True it is fun to talk to someone that far away. But it just seems unfair that we can’t use or own ham radios because they don’t give out ham radio licenses anymore. Why do we gotta worry about the FCC if I wanna have my 10 meter radio tuned into a 11 meter radio in my truck so I can be heard pretty far or talk to someone that’s got a little distance between us. I’m I gonna hurt someone if my radio is able to reach out to someone 50 miles away from me ? I’m not trying to tale over the world I just want my radio to get out there and walk on top of some of these air waves where there’s 20 people trying to talk all at once

    If HAM radio is going to survive, it had better catch up to current tech. What is the purpose of all of the technical testing, when little or none of it will be of value. This made sense in the era of tubes and wires. But TODAY almost all gear is modular and nothing can be done to modify them without voiding the warranty. The testing should center on operational procedures, law, and the ONE area that technical knowledge is key...........antennas. The rest can be fun if you're interested, but outside of QRP, can you think of anyone building their own gear?

    When in got my license back in 1977, it was one big thick book, the radio handbook and you studied day and night and learned code and then went before the FCC in person to get your ticket. I really learned a lot about electronics by studying for my different license classes and upgrading. It was the best period of my life.

    • @Camman010
      @Camman010 3 года назад +1

      Back then you had to hand draw Schematic diagrams of basic radio parts and hand write all your answers. That was back in the day when you needed a good "Elmer" to get your license and help you study.
      The good thing about going to the government to take the test is that you can get your license and call sign the same day rather then sit around for a week or two before getting it in the mail.

What’s the scents in getting into ham-radio and getting the license for it. From where I stand it sounds like everyone is just calling out radio checks all the time and that it. They call out their numbers and locations then they call out to the next guy just to see where y’all reaching to. Someone please school me

      You would have to follow whatever the Mexican guidelines are for amateur radio. I would recommend doing a Google search to see what pops up. An American license from the FCC won't be an option for you unless you're an American citizen. And even then you have to follow the guidelines of the country that you're operating in.

    • @tylerdean980
      @tylerdean980 3 года назад +4

      Because amateur radio is very open ended, and not channelized like other radio services. If you take a baofeng and don’t know what you’re doing, you could unknowingly transmit over the top of emergency services, or operate in spaces reserved for the military or other countries. The license is easy, and is more of a safety and don’t do xyz type exam.

      Yeah, its important to know about things like harmonics and sporadic emissions because you can, in the worst case, potentially kill people when you roll your own.
