Features of an electromechanical relay:
Frame - A Heavy-duty frame
Coil - Wire is wound around a metal core producing an electromagnetic field
Armature - The moving part of the relay that opens and closes the contacts
Contacts - The conducting part of the switch that opens or closes a circuit
A relay might be described as Single-Pole Single-Throw, or Double-Pole Single-Throw. These terms will give you an instant indication of the design and function of the relay.

Relays may, when failing, result in an audible noise. This is often caused by the relay's coil and its inability to close the circuit.
So, would a malfunctioning relay make a horrible noise?
Because i believe I've traced the source of such a noise to one of 5 relays inside of my stereo receiver.
