    Wow what a story. Funny thing is I am eating Portugese Christmas cookies as I watched this story, they are the butter cookies in the metal boxes and somebody bought them from Sams for the Christmas work party, at first I thought they were the Danish ones but was surprised to see made in Portugal. How do you like Portugal compared to California/Los Angeles and Kauai. I have lived in Cali/Los Angeles but on bucket list is Hawaii and Portugal and Spain.

    • @YourHostJ
      @YourHostJ  Год назад +1

      Oh my goodness! You just brought me back to my childhood. I loved those cookies and my grandparents would always have them. They would then reuse the tin box for sewing storage! We'd always get tricked opening them to steal cookies and just see needles and threads 😂 I've lived in Portugal on and off and there is a list of pros and cons to Portugal, but also to every place I've ever lived. Portugal is very safe and affordable and has excellent healthcare and the best food in the world - in my opinion. I may be biased, but I don't know of any other place I've ever visited that can top Portugal's food. You definitely have to visit!

    I just removed a Airbnb guest with the police, they were there for under 30 days and Airbnb canceled there booking so they were trespassing & cops said they were going to start arresting people if they didn’t leave & they did, thankfully 😅 but it was a 4 hour nightmare they tried to take my property hostage

    Sounds like you handled it perfectly. Not the most fun way to learn the eviction process w/ AirBnB.
    So, I have a question: I'm moving to Kauai w/ the Post Office in about 5 weeks+/- a couple of weeks. Do you know of any rentals that go for around $1200 per month there on the Island? Think you mentioned 1k - 1.2k in one of your other videos. Maybe even a property management company that has rentals?
    Thanks so much!

      Hey Christy!
      Sorry only getting back to you now. Yes - definitely a new experience with Airbnb 😂
      Do you know what part of the island you'll want to live? I assume you'd want to be somewhat close to work? Also - how big of a place? To be honest - which that budget - might get a studio or 1 bedroom at best, but again, depends where you're choosing to live on island.

    J, that is crazy! Talk about overstaying your welcome! Just remember for every bad renter I am sure you get 200 amazing and respectful renters. I have a condo on the Big Island up in Waimea. I do minimum of 1 month rentals. My family and I live in Wisconsin so we have a management company located directly across from our complex. I am so happy that they do an amazing job screening our renters. So far no drama and I truly value them. Thanks for sharing that crazy story.

      Hey Adam! Yes - absolutely one bad story in a sea of thousands. Most guests are wonderful and I'm grateful to have them.
      Curious to know - with a 30 day min rental, how does your occupancy rate look like? I know there has been a large increase in guests looking for longer stays so I'm curious how it's working out for you. Also - it's wonderful you found a great management company. I like being as hands-on as I can be and don't want to be dishing out 25% of my income to a property management company. If I couldn't handle it myself - I'd sell my units. I like being busy too.
      Thanks for watching ❤️❤️❤️

      Hey Anthony! Yes - 11 hour time difference. It was crazy. I think I went to bed at 2AM that day. If there is one thing I've learned from being landlord is that you have to keep your composure. You never know how people will react on the other side if you don't try to keep your cool. Being out here in Portugal made the situation tricky and I didn't want my cleaning crew dealing with the consequences of whatever the guy did.

  • @bw7471

    Since you first posted this I've heard a lot of negative remarks about AIRBNB!! In fact there are several wealthy communities around here are thinking of out right prohibition of any and all short term rentals of less than thirty days, except in the case of hotels, resorts, etc, etc. There making the case that it brings too many strangers into a neighborhood that is residential and causing major problems. A murder in one and a couple of rapes and a list of minor annoyances. What is your county doing? Stay well in good health and safe!

    • @YourHostJ
      @YourHostJ  2 года назад

      Hi! Kauai has actually some of the strictest laws in place for short-term rentals. They only allow short-term rentals in 3 VDA areas (vacation destination areas) and if you own outside of those areas - you need a permit, but they stopped issuing those permits I think back in 2008 so you have to be grandfathered in. Of course there is always the good, bad, and the ugly of businesses - but it's been interesting here in Morocco where families are beyond grateful for Airbnb. We did a cooking class with this Moroccan family in their home and they were able to quit their jobs where the average income in Morocco is $200 a month to now they make about $80 a day! Same goes for this Kasbah we stayed in and the owner said he is grateful because Airbnb opened his place up to the world. So, definitely can have its problems like any businesses, but can be helpful for others.
      It's true that there are investors gobbling up places and they put property managers on to manage the place for them and most managers don't give a crap about the place and are happy making their 25%. I think if owners are hands-off - that's where the problems come in. I am super hands-on and know all my neighbors and deal with all my guests myself, but of course a bad guest or two can sneak in when I'm hosting 100's a year.
      My story was unpleasant and horrible to deal with, but the majority of my guests have been great. Also, as a landlord, I'm much more happy have short-term guests than long-term. As I mention in the video - I have way more horror stories in that world than I do with Airbnb.
      Anyway - so nice to hear from you and hope all is well ❤️

    What’s been more of your favorite and less stress, having a short or long term rental?

    • @YourHostJ
      @YourHostJ  2 года назад +1

      Hey Jenna - 100% short-term for sure! It's been on my long list of videos to create a video discussing why I like short-term over long-term. I really grew to hate being a landlord with the long-term renters. When the 1st was around the corner I'd cringe 😂 There are cons to being a short-term landlord, but not nearly as many as long-term.

    • @MrThiefHater
      @MrThiefHater 2 года назад

      I was a landlord of a dozen long term rentals for about 10 years and always had great tenants. I picked my tenants very carefully and always collected the rent in person. I only rented to people that I liked and it always worked out well. I have been afraid to get into the short-term business, actually.
