    Loved the door reference! Took me back to my philosophy days. What Nicole was describing as far as the appearance and pre-conceived function of the door we would call it's "readiness to hand". And when it does not function as expected we are "thrown out" into the world from the comfort or confines of our expectations. Great episode!

  • @ChristianBaptiste

    Excellent video.
    I think The "flexibility" examples could benefit from understanding two main approaches. First example would be the path approach liked turbo tax. It's very structured and meant for a very specific outcome. Opposite to the guided approach is the sand box approach. The San box gives users the set of tools to be used in many ways. This works really well for creative content. It's like buying the star wars death star Lego kit versus a box of random Lego parts.

    “I can't tell whether or not I like these complex terms for really basic concepts. It seems to muddy the conversation.“ I agree! seems like there are terms overlapping each other and is there a universal principle? mental model sounds like expectation of the experience to me...affordance sounds like intuitive

    • @thefutur
      @thefutur  6 лет назад +1

      i think we've addressed that already.

  • @nsokoloff
    @nsokoloff 6 лет назад +1

    Watching the recap. The reason it's called affordance and not expectations is so that it can be used in a design process. E.g. "The button has bad affordance, it doesn't do what users expect"

    • @thefutur
      @thefutur  6 лет назад

      couldn't that work by saying, "This button has bad expectations, it doesn't do what users expect?"

    • @nsokoloff
      @nsokoloff 6 лет назад

      Linguistically I don't think that works, but I'm sure all designers in the room will know what you mean.
      Buttons don't have expectations, buttons are inanimate. They have affordance.
      Chairs afford sitting, buttons afford pushing, knobs afford turning. It's just easier to reference instead of saying "The expectation of chairs is that they can be sit on".
      #hatebeingasmartass

  • @ScottYuJan
    @ScottYuJan 6 лет назад +2

    Yes, the term affordances is not a simple UX term but it's still important to note that there is a difference between affordances and expectations. Expectation is a very result focused term. When _______ happens, the user expects ______ result. While on the other hand, affordances is much more focused on the clues that communicate to a user of an interaction. Because the term originated from architecture and industrial design what it's describing isn't always what the expected outcome is but more what a user is suppose to do. The interactions that a design affords. For example a round object on the ground would afford a user the interaction of rolling it. A door with no handles but a flat metallic plate would afford the user to push the door open rather than pull.

    Awesome video for someone trying to switch career paths and find their way to prove their worth and creativity. I think some other workout future opportunities for the app could be cal intake check through out the day. Afternoon idea to walk through in the background of music because you find out it is a hard time to look at device for help rather than listening skills. Evenings can be an awesome idea to map the next day because the morning I'm lazy and afternoon I'm too busy. another would be a reward system? the idea was motivation workout app and I think if you are able to give results from other people who did this app, maybe work with local area to get coupons fro foods and sups. Lastly for misc. I find checklist for grocery and sups, an actual schedule mapping because everyone is different and foods act different at different parts of the day, and music playlist for different times of the day using hand picked artist and music genres (my music gets more intense building up to workout and then declines for a successful and easy rest at the end of the day).
    Awesome ideas and I love this channel! I spend my off days watching this channel to help me try to switch fields.
    Thanks for everything you do!

      Hi Mathan - My apologies for the delayed response. In the situation where you had multiple personas, you would essentially perform the exercise for each and then dig into identifying what are commonalities/ challenges across all personas and begin to flesh out design solutions.

    -does each firm have their own design process?
    -where would learnability play into these principles ?
    -As a UX designer, how do you keep yourself from falling into the trap of thinking that you are the user? What if you don't have any personas to draw from?
    -how do you strike the balance between familiarity and originality...
    anyone has an answer?

On the other hand, it can wakes up the people, when the video is long. The question is, if this way is the best one and if you can do something else to keep the audience in entertainment while watching the long video. I hope you find my comment useful.
