Long before boxers like Emanuel Augustus or Naseem Hamed used to clown in the ring, well before Adrien "the Problem" Broner spawned more kids than he could support (even while racking up seven-figure fight purses), there was Max Baer, the original clown prince of boxing. Baer was movie star handsome, quick-witted, and actually had legitimate acting chops (I remember seeing him Humphrey Bogart's last vehicle, "The Harder they fall," and being impressed with him). Ironic. Calls braddock greatly underrated and lost because he underestimated him. Instead of taking him serious he fooled around for 15 round and paid the price. Shame
One of the kindest most sensitive champions, Max Baer deserved better than his portrayal in Cinderella man. They twisted him into a villain for literary reasons but why? There was no need for it. The talent, size, and strength advantage were all in Baers favor. His good lighthearted sense of humor juxtaposed against his brute leverage behind his punching in the ring already make for an interesting character and mountain for Braddock to climb.. There was no need to make Baer appear evil when in fact he was a kind person like Dempsey Lo😊uis and Marciano
0:46 what I believe he is talking about is a vitreous detachment, when a gel-like substance degenerates. This may be from getting punched in the eye so often lol
He was depicted to be a bad guy in Cinderella Man - but Baer actually was more heroic than James Braddock. I also respect Jim Braddock and find his comeback story truly inspirational - but in terms of overall impact during those times - Baer actually beat Max Schmeling at Yankee Stadium. Schmeling was Hitler's favorite fighter!!! Baer who is half Jewish was a symbol of victory over German fascism tthat time.
Baer was a favorite of Hitler because he represented Germany, but the admiration wasn't mutual. Baer wasn't a Nazi but he knew he'd face a firing squad if he didn't appear to go along with the program. Schmeling was a decent guy who was misprotrayed just like Baer was in the movie. He paid for Joe Louis's funeral.

I understand why people don't like how Cinderella Man portrayed him as a murderous vile being. That said, he was mean in the ring and a bit of a showboat. Some greats in the early to mid-20th century, they were gentlemen out of their sport and killers in the sport. I think of Dick Butkus in football.
The movie just doesn't show his good nature side for the fact that it isn't about him...though they did have to have a villian.
Wow Cinderella man really painted this guy as an asshole... Wow I'm just shocked.. what a seemingly nice man.. seems very warm and kind.
Max Baer Jr took on his dad's charm.."Jethro" is still alive and is proud of his dad.
Ironic. Calls braddock greatly underrated and lost because he underestimated him. Instead of taking him serious he fooled around for 15 round and paid the price. Shame
Such a shame how Ron Howard slandered his good name while making his movie Cinderella man
In real life max says braddock is great underrated fighter but in the movie make max says braddock is chump
Who else is here because if High School US History Class?
One of the kindest most sensitive champions, Max Baer deserved better than his portrayal in Cinderella man. They twisted him into a villain for literary reasons but why?
There was no need for it. The talent, size, and strength advantage were all in Baers favor. His good lighthearted sense of humor juxtaposed against his brute leverage behind his punching in the ring already make for an interesting character and mountain for Braddock to climb.. There was no need to make Baer appear evil when in fact he was a kind person like Dempsey Lo😊uis and Marciano
Max Baer = class act.
0:46 what I believe he is talking about is a vitreous detachment, when a gel-like substance degenerates. This may be from getting punched in the eye so often lol
You are right. He is talking about vitreous detachment. As someone one that suffers from them I knew what he meant.
Baer is a legend. In truth he was better than Braddock but he didn’t take his career as seriously as he could
He was depicted to be a bad guy in Cinderella Man - but Baer actually was more heroic than James Braddock.
He paid for Joe Louis's funeral.
why did they portray max as an asshole when he was actually a nice guy who respected his oppenents.
Ask ron Howard.
Money is all that matters in Hollywood.
Did he call Joe Lewis a black spot!!
anyone else notice that he was looking at cue cards off camera?
Baer was by all accounts a good guy
Some guys see black some see white, when they get clocked. Max saw something when Joe Louis clocked him.
The Baer family name is still well respected in Sacramento, including Buddy.
Louis gave Max A terrible beating those 3 left hooks that DESTROYED Max reminds me of the 3 hooks that Tyson used to annialate Pinklon Thomas
Just a class act.
Baer was a class act, I hated how he was portrayed in the movie Cinderella Man.
Max looks and sounds like such a nice guy! Just happened to be a really damn good fighter with a monstrous right hand.
watching this trying to figure out if he was "the bad guy" as seen in cinderella man, he doesn't seems to be.
Cinderella man did that man no justice. I see a very humble competitor. They painted him as a cocky asshole.
I think Max was one of the greatest heavyweights ever. Too bad his trainer couldn't control his bravado. One tough cookie.
I too think he is somewhere in the 8,9 to 15,16 range..I read somewhere that Baer fought Joe Louis with an injured right hand..he begged for a rematch but never got one..I think he makes a better showing with an uninjured hand..
@@berniesluder762 agreed, max destroyed schmelling and schmelling whooped louis. I'm sure in full health he would have done much better. He had nasty ko power and accuracy.
Great gentleman
mr baer was a very nice guy....was not trying to kill anyone in the fights.....the fighter that died in the ring mr baer was haunted by the death in his sleep....mr baer was trying to make it up to the fighter's family......
in cinderella man they put him villain because they want to earn money by this stunt
Good dude
Didn't like Max's portrayal I'm Cinderella man. They made him look like a bully and physco...in reality he was very nice.
Max would have been proud of his son playing Jethro on the Beverly Hillbillies.
