baer gets portrayed as a bad guy. he wasn't.
Keith Meeks By all contemporary accounts Max was a fun loving prankster& a kind man. "The Cinderella Man" movie was a rather cruel&positively inaccurate portrayal of Max Baer.
Very true . He was actually a funny guy and was very respectful to his opponents.
Su funny to punch Carnera from behind after the bell ring.
Keith, Exactly. The more of these videos that I watch of Max, the more and more I like him.
Who portrayed him as a bad guy?
max baer was a very nice guy, he even became friends with primo carnera and james braddock after fighting them, and he always went to his rival`s dressing room after his fights to talk to them and wish them the best of luck
I read that Max felt horrible about accidentally causing the death of a fighter. It shook him up so much it led to the ending of his career.
the movie "CINDERELLA MAN" portraied it very very different.
@@blendiferizi4477 movie vs accurate depiction .....see the difference haha
@@blendiferizi4477 What do you expect from Hollywood Bunch of degenerates
Sometimes you won't like a guy till you fight him I've made many good friends fighting them back in school days at least. Hey I might get my ass beat but they're not just going to beat my ass. I will get respect.
Max Baer was a very funny man. He loved to make people laugh. When asked what happened in the Joe Louis fight, he said, "I forgot to duck!" When he died he was staying in a hotel room, he was having a heart attack so he called the front desk for a doctor, the desk clerk said, "Do you want a house doctor?" Max replied, "No, I want a people doctor!"
Max also said about his fight with Louis after some fans questioned him not getting up after Joe put him down was " These people paid to see a fight not a killing " LOL
@@leebowens2631 I think he said it was about how he wasn't going to die for a mere $25 ticket entry...or something to that degree. LoL
That's crazy you guys were there... Fake azz facts
Reagan stole the first line
He had ice cream every day.
Damnn they made him out to be a jackass in the movie. he seems like such a nice guy tf
Yea that was pretty messed up.they did that just to make Braddock seem more heroic..and in Hollywood, every hero needs a villian counterpart
@@tommybrown9534
Yes, but there are enough antagonists in that film: the guy who fired Braddock at the beginning of the movie, sporty Lewis, etc.
There are other movies of this type (like The pursuit of happiness, or Alive, for example) without a main antagonist and they are still good movies, so no need to ruin the reputation of a man.
@@Cerdo_asqueroso I agree with u dude.100%
@@Cerdo_asqueroso They only had to portray him as a very dangerous opponent, which he was, to have the drama they needed for the film. They didn't have to portray him as an a-hole. It was disgraceful. The only thing they got right was the sportsmanship that Baer showed at the end of the fight, which could have gone unnoticed if you weren't paying close attention.
They also made Braddock and his manager Joe Gould seem like saints but after they won the title they refused to fight Joe Louis for 2 years and they would have stalled for even longer if Louis didn't agree to their extortion demands which were 10% of Louis earnings for the rest of his life.
Judging by how he describes an opponent he sounds like a heck of a nice guy. Hollywood should issue an apology.
they have to create an adversary for the movie. anyone who really knows boxing knows better and knows both were nice guys.
@@heyphilphil They had to make the point that he was a feared fighter. They didn't have to make him an a-hole. They basically made him into the character he played in "The Harder They Fall", rather than the real man. Disgraceful. And what was the deal with making the Star of David on his trunks a lot less prominent than it was in the real fight?
@@patrickmorgan4006 what people don't realize is that Baer had Irish blood from his mom's side.
Its a movie give it a break!
@@GeorgeFitness-yo8bl Yeah, it's a movie, a movie that claims to tell a true story about real people. Everyone expects the film makers to fudge a few facts to make it more entertaining and fit it into a reasonable length, but anyone should (if they aren't sh*theads) expect that they would portray the real people in a somewhat honest manner. I'm sure that anyone, Ron Howard included, would not want his or a family member's reputation damaged by lies that millions of people believe at face value. Howard did that to Baer for no good reason. It would not have hurt his movie at all if he had been more honest.
I like how classy and well spoken the fighters were back in the days comparing to todays shit talking disrespectfull boxer's
Yeah calling someone a black spot is not racist right
@@YungDeuceOhhh he clearly said that it was his manager who said that
Oh for F sake it was 1935. Chalk up another comment from the endlessly offended crowd. You do know Joe Louis WAS black right? He wasn't intentionally insulting the man. Consider the context not just the content.

His words are those of a fair - play sportsman , who shows respect for his opponent. Thank you for sharing. 😊
I know a movie needs a villian and he was a good one, it made the under dog cinderella story more satisfying. That being said I am SO happy that everywhere I go I see people standing up for baer and actually know that he was a good person.
Agreed...!
It's up to We the People to call bullshit...bullshit.
Especially if it comes from the MSM or the entertainment industry.
It's a crime how he was portrayed in the "Cinderella Man" Movie.
That was awesome that Baer spoke of the Brown Bomber.
:D
Max was a very easy going and fun loving man. His gracious description of Jimmy Braddock and Joe Louis reveals the deep depth of humility Max had. Max was "NOTHING" like the sadistic and brutal character portrayed in the Ron Howard Movie, Cinderella Man. Ron Howard should have researched his boxing historical material better before making his movie. All boxing history students were aware of the very likable personality in the "real" Max Baer, and the movie made Max a monster, something he was NOT!
That's why I never go to the movies. Hollywood doesn't care about accurate portrayals.
Absolutely agree. The portrayal of him in the movie was a disgrace. 😢
Indeed...Ron did a great disservice to a wonderful man.
Max sure didn't deserve that.
Max was a really good guy and very fun loving...almost always laughing.
I wonder if Ron knew Max's history and did it anyway or just had to make him into a villain to help the movie plot, etc...
I suspect that Ron Howard knew he was misrepresenting Baer's character but did it anyway for dramatic effect. Similarly, in Apollo 13, Howard depicted an angry argument between the 3 astronauts which never actually happened, just for dramatic effect,@@BrotherPatriot.
@@justintime1343 Ron Howard directs the movies. He doesn't write the screen play.
Very good Max, my compliment to you, where ever you are now. RIP

The best book about Max Baer is titled "Max Baer and Barney Ross: Jewish Heroes of Boxing." Read it and enjoy reliving some of the most exciting bouts of the 1930s.
hey. wtf does his religion have to do with his character? James Braddock.. Irish Roman Catholic embarrassed a Jew. By Dr Phil
@@jackwoods6249 His brother Augie was adopted, not Max.
@@dlaliberte5633 religion has nothing to do with being Jewish. Jews are descendants of Abraham, a racial/ethnic group. Hitler couldn't have cared less whether they went to synagogue or not.
Max had horrible nightmares about killing Frankie Campbell. His wife and kids said that he would cry and weep for hours at night. It was also said that he had a small nervous breakdown from killing 2 people. Most people don't know that Max spent time in prison because of killing Frankie Campbell. It was a different time back then. And yes Ron Howard caught a ton of crap for portraying Max in this light. His son the also famous actor Max Baer jr. AKA Jethro Bodine was very angry about it knowing how his father suffered from killing 2 fighters. Another unknown fact was that Max Baer was fighting Jimmy Braddock with a broken hand
I love this man he was very strong I think he can compete also in modern boxing with any problem,
WTF!? This is not the Max Baer the movie made him out to be. I've seen the movie so many times and it WAS one of my all-time favorites. After seeing the real Max Baer, I can no longer say that it is still one of my favorites. The movie was nothing but a lie! Just makes you wonder how many millions of other people who've seen the movie will go on for the rest of their lives never knowing how the real Max was actually a good guy. It's really messed up.
This is nothing--if you really wanna know what he was like, I'd recommend watching the "Tender-Hearted Tiger" documentary they made about him. It features a few of his friends and family giving their opinions of him and telling his real story. There are a few uploads of it here on RUclips, but the one from FightFilmsGuy is the one you want. There are a few minor mistakes in there, but it's a pretty good capture of the guy's real personality.
@@foxfire9144 they re-edit a lot of the dates and times of certain events to glorify Max Baer a lot more than he really was during his career though. For example, the documentary portrays Baer's fight with Schmeling not happening until after Max Schmeling ko'd Joe Louis ; in order to give more sentimental value to Baer's victory over Schmeling, since Baer was racially Jewish.
Right..making Maxxy look like a jerk was good for cinema..Baer's son,who played Jethro Clampett on the Beverly Hillbillies, was PISSED!!!
@@berniesluder762actually he was Jethro

Actually, that was a very repectful interview. I looked this up 'cause of loving the story cinderella man, but on this vid, thanks. Puts a lot more professionalism in the sports reporting, he seems like a good guy!
Complete gentleman
When Frankie Campbell died after his fight w/ Baer , Baer was very sad and was about to quit boxing all together.
This was when people in sports respected each other before competition.
Right...before guys like Ali made it a thing to do the opposite.
Totally different outlook back then. Publicly, fighters would speak well of their opponents. Today, it's mostly trash talk.
Max was a charming bloke!
Max Baer was great. He was a cutup and loved by everybody. I love James Braddock too but Cinderella Man was complete BS.
It's a good drama. I don't really like to compare it to real life. It would ruin a ton of great movies if I thought about their inaccuracies.
I understand why Baers family was upset and I certainly can't blame them for that. And if you're close to that situation it also makes sense to be upset. But if you're not I think you'd be doing yourself a disservice by picking movies apart because they weren't true to life.
Yeah the movie portrays Baer as a real jerk but you can clearly see he wasn't like that at all in reality
@@BrokenGodEnt Then you call it fiction and create ficticious characters. You don't use real names!
@@BrokenGodEnt If you want to professionally benefit off real people you have an obligation to be accurate as you possibly can. If you want to make up your own characters theres this thing called FICTION. Cinderella Man was absolutely slander of Max Baer. Ron Howard should be ashamed of himself.
It is sickening how Max Baer was portrayed in the Cinderella movie. Ron Howard should be a shamed of himself. Max Baer Jr. should sue him for this distortion -very sad.
Ron Howard directed the movie. He didn't write the screen play.
The part Max played in the movie The Harder They Fall is where the bad guy idea came from, pure fiction
Men back then were real men. They were incredible tough and they had HONOR!!! Men today talk smack, have to cheat and take steroids to compete.

Can't help but agree.
To slander someone of such good standing...should have brought them to court over it.
You can't sue for slander on behalf of a dead man. That's probably why they portrayed Baer like that. They knew they could get away with it.
This is Max Baer at 26. When men were men. Take a look at the average 26-year old nowadays. Bunch of fairies with sandals
Lol I'll bet you're like 50

God fucking damn that’s intimidating, I’m 24 and the guy looks like he’s fuckin 40
Long before boxers like Emanuel Augustus or Naseem Hamed used to clown in the ring, well before Adrien "the Problem" Broner spawned more kids than he could support (even while racking up seven-figure fight purses), there was Max Baer, the original clown prince of boxing. Baer was movie star handsome, quick-witted, and actually had legitimate acting chops (I remember seeing him Humphrey Bogart's last vehicle, "The Harder they fall," and being impressed with him). Like many greats, Baer killed a man early in his career, and the specter of his felled opponent hung over the remainder of his days like a cloud. Depending on who you ask, Baer was also the first Jewish heavyweight champion of the world.
There was another?🤔As far as I know, Baer was the only Jewish heavyweight champion. But there were Jewish world champions in other divisions. Benny Leonard (Benjamin Leiner) comes to mind.
Don't let that nice guy demeanor fool you, max whoop yo @ss
I need to read more about Baer. Movies need the bad guy and maybe he was portrayed wrong for that reason.
Respect used to be something humans did.
Jethro don’t look anything like His Father(Whom you are seeing in this video).
I never knew that Jethro had A Father who was A Champion Fighter.

They portrayed Max Bear as a baby guy in the, "Cinderella Man Movie".
Opie should have made a followup movie portraying the real Max Baer. What a shame. The more I learn about Max Baer the more upset I get.
Not exactly the ogre he was portrayed in "Cinderella Man." Sad that films take such liberties.
Great movie!!!!
It really was...but to bad they slandered Max, which is pretty low.
He's a G
Much classier than the movie version.
Max Baer paid for boxers medical expenses that couldn't afford it, class act.
Look at what the real Max Baer said as opposed to the lies in the movie Cinderella man. There was no need to make Max out to be the bad guy. The story was great without the exaggerated bad guy.
Wikipedia says it was learned weeks later that Baer fought Louis with a broken right hand that never healed from his fight with James J. Braddock. Max was virtually helpless without his big right hand in the Louis fight.
Max Baer was actually a nice guy. I hated how he was portrayed in Cinderella Man.
Max Baer was that guy 💪🏽💪🏽
It should be fucking illegal to paint a real guy as a villian, that's not even a bad guy....
Seems like a class act to me 👍🏻
Max Baer had a lot of class. He was not only a bad ass but he was a gentleman who talked highly of his opponent.
I liked Cinderella man but they portrayed Baer the complete wrong way.
What a classy guy.....the Cinderella Man movie really misportrayed him.
Every movie needs a villain
The trash talking today (which Ali started in the 60s) has gotten so out of hand that it's childish.
The Baer family name is still well respected in Sacramento, including Buddy.
Wow Cinderella man really painted this guy as an asshole... Wow I'm just shocked.. what a seemingly nice man.. seems very warm and kind.
Much nice guy than he was depicted in the movie "Cinderella Man", although I still like the movie
Joe Loius said that they dont come no tougher'n Baer!
I may be mistaken but didn't Max's son play Jethro in The Beverley Hillbillies?
Yes. Max Baer Jr.
Max Baer Jr took on his dad's charm.."Jethro" is still alive and is proud of his dad.
Yeah I watched Cinderella Man again yesterday, love that movie. But I am wondering Why Ron Howard (director) portrayed Max as being the meanest boxer of all. I also read that 2 boxers did die in after the fights with Max. Campbell died I guess about an hour after the fight with Max, and Max was crying uncontrollably it says on Baer's website put up by Max's family and Max Baer Jr. Also it says that Max took care of Campbell's family financially because he had a wife and kids. So sad though and kind of ticks me off that they made Max look to be a bad guy!! I myself was a boxer in the 70's and did it for 6 years, almost went to Golden Gloves. But I got a bad concussion right before the tournament and had to quit boxing. Was a skinny runt, a whopping 165 pounds, Middleweight.
Good dude
Total contrast with the movie
Max Baer = class act.
Great gentleman
Louis gave Max A terrible beating those 3 left hooks that DESTROYED Max reminds me of the 3 hooks that Tyson used to annialate Pinklon Thomas
anyone else notice that he was looking at cue cards off camera?
I enjoyed the movie "Cinderella Man" about Jim Braddock but this was their one mistake. Baer was a class act and they portrayed him as a villain unnecessarily. Hope they do a biopic about him one day.
I’m dumbfounded!!! I thought this dude was a MONSTER!!! Damn!!! 🤬😡😔😞🇳🇬🇺🇸
I understand why people don't like how Cinderella Man portrayed him as a murderous vile being. That said, he was mean in the ring and a bit of a showboat. Some greats in the early to mid-20th century, they were gentlemen out of their sport and killers in the sport. I think of Dick Butkus in football.
The movie just doesn't show his good nature side for the fact that it isn't about him...though they did have to have a villian.
watching this trying to figure out if he was "the bad guy" as seen in cinderella man, he doesn't seems to be.
It’s a small world let me tell you, my sister dated Max Baer jr. , a.k.a. Jethro from the Beverly Hillbillies , i’m only here after watching Cinderella Man. I just thought I would share that with you people of the world and by the way he’s still alive from what I understand.
I appreciate the comments here. I became confused after seeing the movie and then watching the actual fight; the latter of which seemed to show no malice; a boring fight but two guys with dangerous right hands. Braddock did a great job of hanging in there the one round where Baer caught him; unlike the movie that was more like Rocky Balboa and Clubber Lang. Now Braddock-Lewis was a real rockem sockem. Reminded me of Tyson- Hollyfield 1 except a shorter bout.
Poland love Braddock🇵🇱🇵🇱🇵🇱🇵🇱🇵🇱🇶🇦
Just a class act.
Some guys see black some see white, when they get clocked. Max saw something when Joe Louis clocked him.
No smack-talk from Baer. Seems like a hard guy not to like.
Max would have been proud of his son playing Jethro on the Beverly Hillbillies.
I think Max was one of the greatest heavyweights ever. Too bad his trainer couldn't control his bravado. One tough cookie.
I too think he is somewhere in the 8,9 to 15,16 range..I read somewhere that Baer fought Joe Louis with an injured right hand..he begged for a rematch but never got one..I think he makes a better showing with an uninjured hand..
@@berniesluder762 agreed, max destroyed schmelling and schmelling whooped louis. I'm sure in full health he would have done much better. He had nasty ko power and accuracy.
Baer was by all accounts a good guy
He was depicted to be a bad guy in Cinderella Man - but Baer actually was more heroic than James Braddock. I also respect Jim Braddock and find his comeback story truly inspirational - but in terms of overall impact during those times - Baer actually beat Max Schmeling at Yankee Stadium. Schmeling was Hitler's favorite fighter!!! Baer who is half Jewish was a symbol of victory over German fascism tthat time.
Baer was a favorite of Hitler because he represented Germany, but the admiration wasn't mutual. Baer wasn't a Nazi but he knew he'd face a firing squad if he didn't appear to go along with the program. Schmeling was a decent guy who was misprotrayed just like Baer was in the movie. He paid for Joe Louis's funeral.
One of the kindest most sensitive champions, Max Baer deserved better than his portrayal in Cinderella man. They twisted him into a villain for literary reasons but why?
There was no need for it. The talent, size, and strength advantage were all in Baers favor. His good lighthearted sense of humor juxtaposed against his brute leverage behind his punching in the ring already make for an interesting character and mountain for Braddock to climb.. There was no need to make Baer appear evil when in fact he was a kind person like Dempsey Lo😊uis and Marciano
mr baer was a very nice guy....was not trying to kill anyone in the fights.....the fighter that died in the ring mr baer was haunted by the death in his sleep....mr baer was trying to make it up to the fighter's family......
