Basalt - Minerals Education Coalition
Basalt is a dark-colored volcanic rock that is rich in iron and magnesium. The percentage of each mineral in basalt can vary, but the combination of these minerals gives basalt its darker color.
Basalt is formed at divergent plate boundaries on the mid-ocean ridge system. Hot rock from deep in the mantle melts as the divergent boundary pulls apart, and the molten rock erupts onto the sea floor.
Basalt is used in many different ways, including in construction, industrial, and artistic fields. Basalt dust can also be used as an additive in compost heaps, in making Biodynamic Manure Concentrate and Biodynamic Paste, and broadcast over paddocks and garden beds.
