    The grocery store near me has a public bulletin board near the entrance where people can post things for garage sales, job offers, stuff for sale, missing people, etc. Basically it's an old-school version of Craig's List.
    From time to time I'll see a posting that'll have something like "LOOKING TO BUY OLD BROKEN ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT, CIRCUIT BOARDS, ETC." For a while I wondered why somebody would want broken electronics and PCBs. Now I know, thanks to this video.

    Lets see here...he made 1.47 grams of gold...which at current market rates would go for...38 dollars.
    38 dollars.
    How much did all those chemicals cost? How about the equipment? How about all the time getting those electronic parts? Doesn't seem worth it.

    Fascinating; as someone who was totally uninterested in chemistry at school I found this much easier to follow than most of what our teachers droned on about. I have five enormous crates of PCBs (about 300 kgs) but sadly no acids, no respirator of fume hood and most of all no time so they'll be off to the recycling centre to make someone else's "fortune" as soon as I can get organised.

    • @darci480

      darci480 You are kidding right? 300 kgs would have approximately 0.03 to 0.04 kg of pure gold. Do people on here just make shit up in their head and spout them off as fact?

    • @Harrylechat01
      @Harrylechat01 9 лет назад +1

      m0t0rcade Sadly you're right; I can't even find a scrap dealer locally to take them because PCBs contain so many other dangerous substances. They were in the outhouse when I bought the place, along with several drums of very old industrial lubricants . . . But hey, that's OIL right? Must be worth at least, I dunno, a thousand bucks.

  • @tonypittsburgh9
    @tonypittsburgh9 10 лет назад +11

    Nice! I use to work in electroplating and have to ask, The gold foils particles will be 99.5 percent gold. After dissolving and reprecipitating, you might be 99 percent, but if you take that to sell, they will charge you a refining fee for further purification. Why not just collect the gold foil and melt it?

    • @JimShew2
      @JimShew2 9 лет назад

      The individual foil pieces are a small fraction of a milligram in weight. Because they're each so light, it doesn't take much of a breeze (or convection current from the melting crucible) to literally blow them away.

    • @JimShew2
      @JimShew2 9 лет назад +2

      With the pieces being so lightweight, it's not simply a matter of simply putting them into a container and fusing them together. Most flames don't reach the 1945 F / 1090 C required to melt 24K gold. (a butane lighter flame is around 800C) Long before the temperature is hot enough to soften the pieces, convection currents from the heating will cause the pieces to become airborne.

    • @JimShew2
      @JimShew2 9 лет назад +4

      The difficulty here is that these extremely light pieces act more like dust or confetti then the heavy metal we are used to in everyday settings. Because of the convection currents, the scene inside the hot container "oven" would resemble a shook-up snow-globe paperweight.While the gold foils would each melt into balls, they would only melt together if the pieces struck each other. It would take several dozen fusings before a piece's weight overcomes its tendency to float around on the breezes about it.

    • @JimShew2
      @JimShew2 9 лет назад

      Yes, while eventually the pieces would collide with each other and fuse, it would take far longer (weeks) than we would want to wait. The method used at the end of this video of dissolving them in acid, besides also being the first step in refining, is much faster and far less costly than the gas/power to hold a kiln oven at around 1100 C for several days.

    • @JimShew2
      @JimShew2 9 лет назад

      ***** Focusing solar energy onto these pieces won't help here because unlike a gold ring, these pieces are not heavy enough to stay put. As soon as the surroundings warm up, and long before the pieces are hot enough to become molten, convection currents will blow the pieces about in random directions.

He was showing you the fundamentals, using this method with a metric crap ton of recovered electronic scrap you can make quite a substantial amount. You have to just put the time and effort. All at one time or split up. Just have fun but be careful as he states in the video. Follow directions people and listen Damnit!

  • @twasbrillig33
    @twasbrillig33 9 лет назад +41

    I watched the whole thing, everything was fantastic and perfectly clear until the end when I was utterly confused by what APPEARS to be the gold having been turned into a liquid solution. It seems to me he did this step without forewarning that this would happen nor was any explanation provided as to what happened to the gold or how to recover the gold from this gold colored liquid or why it is even necessary to take it to this level of dissolution.. As a complete noob I want to know these things. I clicked on the other videos and there was no further explanation. Frustrating.

    • @JimShew2
      @JimShew2 9 лет назад +2

      You are correct in what that last part appears to be, but I also failed to initially follow the "why" of that part of dissolving the gold foil completely in "aqua regia". (Nitrohydrochloric acid - one of the only acids capable of dissolving pure gold) One guess is that this method allows recovery without risking the the extremely thin (measured in tens of microns [1 micron = 0.001 of a mm or 0.00004 inches]) gold foil pieces becoming airborne and lost. Recovery of gold from the aqua regia can be as simple as neutralizing the acid with something alkaline.

    • @108faithful
      @108faithful 9 лет назад

      JimShew2 no u cant neutralize a.r to get gold... its like sugar solution .. only to get iit is by precipitating the gold.. thats how u get 99.9% pure gold.. if u nneutralizea.r u may get gold compounds in which gold is impure.. to do that... u need to add a precipitating agent

      Rudra Chakraborti Thanks, Not having dissolved any gold myself, I was relying upon theory, not proven fact.

    While this is interesting, I can't help but wonder how many computers/electronics are needed to obtain a single ounce of gold. The video showed a considerable pile of connectors, far more than what you'd get from a single PC and the net result looked like it was perhaps a half ounce of gold.
    I can't help but wonder just how economical this method is when you consider the cost of chemicals and associated hardware. I'm not knocking the process, but I do think the poster could have done a better job explaining the source materials, costs and results.

    The processes shown in this video is absolutely ridiculous. I have recovered many troy lbs of gold from electronics scraps with a much easier, safer and faster method. instead of hydroelectric acid I used Nitric acid and water 50/50 mixture, the Nitric acid would dissolve the base metals in minuets instead of days. I could have separated the gold in this video in less than 1/2 hour. when the Nitris acid is finished (full of copper) it can be evaporated in a pan the remaining salts are copper salts and can also be sold. Nitric acid is far safer to work with, I got acid on my skin many times the only time I have ever been burned by it was if there was an existing injury that was exposed to the acid. I have even had it splash into my eyes once or twice with out any problems I simply washed it out. The fumes created however are quite noxious and this should only be done out doors or under a hood. A couple notes with this method: Nitric acid doesn't dissolve tin the tin or lead (solder)solder becomes a gray past in the bottom of the container so it is best to remove as much solder as possible before progressing the scrap. secondly nickle isn't dissolved either it generally breaks up into very small flakes and is removed in a secondary process I used involving mercury. this process involved amalgamating the gold in mercury then separating the gold from the mercury in a retort this process was very efficient and I recovered all the mercury to be reused again. The resulting gold was averaging 98.6% pure gold. I only stopped recovering gold because it became harder and harder to find good gold scraps, a sign of the times I guess they use less and less gold in electronics now.

      Also you recovered less than 1/2 gram of gold from the amount of scraps you processed. the fingers you used look to be from more modern circuit boards the gold is very thin, try some old Digital Corporation circuit boards from the PDP series computers you will be amazed at the difference in the thickness of the plating. the first computer I scraped was a small PDP8 computer, I recovered 3.4 ounce of gold from this one computer alone.

      floyd ster Hello Floyd I wish I could however it has been many years since I have done any gold recovery, I no longer have the equipment, gold scraps or access to Nitric acid I once did. If you want to give it a try visit your local chemical supply house, I used to buy it in 8 gal stainless steal carboys this was generally 70% Nitric acid. I could recover about 4 to 6 oz troy with 8 gal. of acid This was before 9/11 Nitric acid in higher % can be used to make explosives so I'm not sure of the availability these days without obtaining permits. If you try it two things I didn't mention was the filter method and the etching container, the gold gets pretty agitated and breaks up into some pretty small particles (depending on the thickness of the plating) so took a 1 gal plastic jar ( big 1 gal mayonnaise jar was best) cut a large round hole in the screw on top, then lay silk screen cloth over the opening and replaced the screw on top, then cut off the bottom of the jar it made a great filter to pour through, the other thing I used was a 5 gal plastic bucket never put more than 2 gal of acid in the 5 gal. bucket or it will foam over and you will loose gold all over the ground. (hard lesson learned) and never never add water to fresh acid always add acid to water. there can be a pretty good exothermic reaction otherwise (another hard learned lesson started to melt my buckets LOL) Good luck, if you try it let me know if you give it a try or have any questions. I've seen videos on YT of people stripping off the gold-plated fingers by simply applying heat and pressure. That way you have a lot less non-gold material to remove. PCBs and components may have gold on them elsewhere, but the gold content is really small and/or hard to extract.

      Just enough to cover them really. THe solution can hold about 2lbs of copper and nickel per gallon and there is very little copper in those fingers. As for the peroxide, one part 3% peroxide to 4 parts HCL 31.45 % should do the trick. I would however, really recommend the air bubbler system. As for the cell boards, if they are clean they can be processed this same way.

    I have a question about your process. I see that you filter the gold/copper chloride solution, then dilute both in aqua regia. You then filter the mixture to obtain the aqua regia with the dissolved gold. My question is this: How can you filter this solution using a filter that can dissolve in aqua regia? Or is this rendered negligible with the following precipitation of the gold/filtering step?

      This is pretty much why places that collect electronic stuff for reclaiming precious metals will take as much as they can get their hands on. There are several places in Massachusetts that process it in bulk, enough to fit one or two flatbed trucks.
      On the other hand, once the initial investment has been made, it will begin to pay for itself, if you're in the habit of collecting that much old gear.

      Nope not worth it, the amount of time you spend getting a tiny bit of gold out of it which isn't worth enough for the labor involved.
      You will make more money just working at a job than getting gold out this way. Unless you have a giant version of this where you can get a lot of gold out, in which case you will have to spend a ton of money to make this a viable thing.

    • @L4ND.SH4RK
      @L4ND.SH4RK 10 лет назад +6

      dodgedaytona25 He's just talking about splashing and cautious teachers, I'm sure. Whatever liquid is being poured will travel to the bottom of whatever container it is being poured into--the liquid already in the container will splash out. If acid is already present and water is being poured too fast or from too high, the acid will splash out and possibly cause damage to self or property.

    • @dodgedaytona25
      @dodgedaytona25 10 лет назад

      Ok. I see.

    • @AkshaySinghJamwal
      @AkshaySinghJamwal 10 лет назад +5

      Christopher Pinterich Actually, he's talking about pouring concentrated acids into water. Strictly speaking, only denser-than-water liquids would travel to the bottom of a container filled with water. If you poured certain alcohols into water (or oil, for that matter), they would float, not sink.
      The height from which you pour is definitely a variable, but If you're adding H2SO4 into a large volume of water, it isn't all that bad as the reaction is contained by the large volume of water- water isn't as dense, so acid, when poured into water sinks instantly, and the reaction occurs closer to the bottom of a beaker or container.
      However, if you do it the other way round, i.e. pour water into a large volume of conc. H2SO4, you instantly get a highly volatile reaction as the H2SO4 vigorously reacts with ALL the water, nearly instantly. Moreover, since the water isn't as dense, the reaction occurs mostly at the top, causing the reaction to fizzle, splash out etc.

    6 grams is 1/5th ounce. gold is 1236 dollars per ounce this makes it about $247.50. From this we have to figure what you have paid for the starting, our time is worth and the materials. Figure as a guess $100 dollars. This means that after a week you have made about $150.00 and possibly less. This may pay on a larger scale.

      ***** Hi, it depends if you use a metric ounce of 30g per ounce or a Troy ounce (29.95g) , which is quite close. If the daily price is $1236 x 6g/30g =$247.20. or 5 divided into 1236. Check this by multipying $247.2 times 5 to get the original starting figure. Best,

      Nicholas Sceusa Actually, a metric ounce is 25 grams it's not widely used. The most common ounces are AVDP or "standard" ounce which is 28.3 grams, and the troy ounce, which is what gold is measured in on the stock exchange @ 31.1 grams per ounce. So, if you were wanting to know the price of gold per gram, you would divide the current bid price ($1322.30 today) by 31.1 to get the price per gram. If you factor in the cost of all the materials used in this process, including electricity to run the air pump, heat plate etc. it's virtually impossible to make money from gold plated components, even if you get the components free.

    This is really impressive. But counting the price of materials used for this (acid and stuff) and the value of your time, is it worth the price in gold you get in the long run?

      A/w root beer for a good reminder Always acid into water . not water into acid , the metals in water could cause a reaction .

      Thank you very much for the prompt response and the info. Very informative.
      I've been working as a mechanic for over 45 yrs and you've helped see that I've been wasting a lot of scrap instead of stripping it down.
      Ford starter solenoids have a lot of copper in them, but over the years, I just tossed 'em when they went bad.
      I used to sell old starters and alternators to rebuilder's, but it would seem no one rebuilds them anymore.
      GM starters are pretty easy to remove all the copper form the armature, and I just figured out how to do it on Fords.
      I look forward to learning more from you and if you ever have a need for any help on your vehicle and I can help you out, please do not hesitate to ask.

      Mike Paul That's awesome! Glad I could be of help to you. I have been wanting to make a video on scrapping a starter and an alternator but I do not come across car parts too often. Are you able to make a video of you taking a starter apart? I would love to see it! Thanks!

      Mike Paul i work for the largest starter/alternator manufacturer in the world. I can tell you exactly where all the copper is and how to get it out easily without damaging it.

    Can't knock it for a hobby. It's a great method. I don't always take as many steps as this, i just use muriatic acid and hydrogen peroxide and it doesn't take me more then a couple of days each batch.

      What do you do as the next step? Muriatic and bleach to dissolve gold into solution?

    Holy shit that real gold? You can try making an even bigger batch to get more gold and pawn that for a couple hundred. My guess for that piece of gold is about 3oz

    Is it possible to just use some tools to pull the gold off of the "fingers" instead of using acid? I mean it would take a lot longer but is it possible? Or is the gold coverered by copper aswell? Sorry don't know much about this :P

    Great video, I'm planning to attempt this myself but want to be as safe as possible(within my spending limit). I lack a fume hood and bought a 3M tekk mask pro multi-purpose with cartridges that say the protect from certain organic vapors, chlorine, hydrogen chloride, sulfur dioxide or hydrogen fluoride or hydrogen sulfide and particles. Would this be sufficient to use if process is done outside? Was considering maybe a SCBA but wouldn't know where to start.
    Also, what containers would be good for storing/transporting the waste acid to turn in for proper disposal? Any info greatly appreciated.

    I am a gold miner and my question is. I save all my black sand and heavies after I reclaim all my gold but have always wondered if the black sand and fines I have left over have any microscopic amounts of gold in it to recover still or if it's just garbage at that point.

      +The Great Gyrofluff This has nothing to do with creating gold. This is simply extracting gold from other metals. Chemists have known this for dozens of years.
