The Trot lengthening is a movement that first shows up at First Level. The trot lengthening is a test of “thrust” - the horses’ ability to push from the hind leg, through their back and into longer, more suspended strides.
Are you having trouble getting a trot lengthening on your horse? Most all horses tend to rush and get quicker in the trot instead of actually lengthening the stride! Here are some exercises to help you!
According to the U.S. Dressage Federation's Glossary of Judging Terms, lengthening is defined as "Elongation of the stride and the outline of the horse, yet maintaining the same tempo [beats per minute] and balance as in the corresponding working pace.”
Here are some exercises to try:
Go up the quarter line, leg yield over to the rail, then lengthen the trot down the long side. The leg yield is an exercise for lateral suppleness that helps loosen the horses’ back so that they CAN actually find a longer stride.
Ride the lengthening on a 20m circle - using a curved line for the lengthening helps to keep the horse from getting strong and braced in the top-line. It is important to keep the horse round and supple in the neck and back in order to actually get a longer trot stride.
Riding diagonal after diagonal in lengthening trot WILL NOT improve your trot lengthening. Practicing transitions into and back from the lengthening is more useful.
It can be helpful to ride the lengthening in posting trot to get off the horses back and allow them to move bigger.
Think about the tempo as you start the lengthening - really think to yourself slower-bigger-slower-bigger.
Remember that your horse has to be supple in order to get the strides longer and not just faster.
Hope these tips are helpful and let me know in the comments section if they are!
Happy Riding!Amelia
I just love how Amelia approaches subjects like this with a very no-nonsense explanation and simple exercise! How many of has been sent on the diagonal a zillion times by our teachers with no decipherable explanation of how to get the horse's stride to lengthen rather than speed up?
I will be saying "slower, bigger, slower, bigger" during my lengthenings from now on! This has been such a challenging concept for me but I think I'm starting to get it.

May I please ask a simple question about the basics. What are the aids for the extended trot as I did not see those explained. Is it just a firmer leg to push them forwards and speed control on the reins or is there something else to it ? Likewise what are the aids for the collected?
I wanted to ask about the same, but I see there is already this question!:)
@@jakajajestem were you able to find the answer to this question?
@@canary2852 not exactly, but I did some excercises by myself and what I do is:
- stronger leg
- standing higher in the trot (in the standing phase)
- and I became tips I should make rein shorter
It's somehow like trying to go into the canter, but without transition into canter;)
And it works for me, but I'm not sure if these aids are proper, because I ride for a pleasure not for competition.. :)
I hope you will receive the proper answer!:)
@@jakajajestem ok, thanks so much!
Fantastic timing on this video as the show season is rapidly approaching and I am a First Level competitor this year. The leg yield to lengthening exercise and K to B lengthen with the 10 meter circle are great with my horse. I have your First Level course. Anyone that is competing at that level needs to have that course. It helps so much with my visualization and keeps me for making common faults. Thank you so much for these exercises.
Yay!! Good luck this season!!
Thanks Amelia ! This is so much harder than it look! Here’s my question: you say “slower” and I’m assuming u r half halting with hand and seat- but when u say “bigger” - what then? R u pulsing your calf and or creating a longer thrust with your lifting post? “Bigger “ is definitely the challenge for me!
Thank you for a great exercise, I did the leg yield on a quarter line and then trot lengthening along the wall and it worked like charm. My horse is fussy when I ask for engagement and this exercise calmed her right down and she did nice few steps of lengthening . After couple of repetition she anticipated but I let her do it and she was very happy and proud😁😁😁
I'm excited to watch! I'm currently working on extending my trot and canter! I dont do dressage, but it'll help anyways! Usually my horse just goes faster and it a struggle to get them to extended and not just go fast :/. Super helpful thank you!
Yes! Get them horse supple!
Absolute gorgeous horse!
This is a very helpful instructional video. My mare just rushes and wants to canter. I have yet to achieve the true lengthening but will implement these ideas! Thank you Amelia!
Brilliant video but could you kindly repeat/explain the aids needed for the extended trot. Thankyou
Thank you for these Amelia! Great tips! I have a little quarter arab cross with his front legs shorter than his hind legs so lengthenings are especially difficult for him! With my warmblood, my instructor had me do some half-steps before the diagonal. I found going from extreme short to the lengthening was super useful for developing thrust in the first part of a lengthening, but then he kind of petered out and started going quick and choppy by the end of the diagonal. Maybe doing the shorter diagonal will help so he can keep the thrust. I also really liked your tip about doing a circle at the end, kind of like bringing the horse back from the canter lengthening in First Level Test 1.
Sorry if silly question im still learning. What is the aid to ask for a lengthened trot? Is it just more forward?
This video is so what I needed to see right now! My mare definitely evades the bigger strides by going faster and on the forehand, I'm working on that at the moment so will try out these exercises 😄 thanks for the tips!
Thank you for sharing. I have a horse that tends to rush and hollow. This is very helpful!
Brilliant exercises - can't wait to try them out!
Let me know how it goes!
@@AmeliaNewcombDressage Legyield to the wall and then lengthen was a game changer! Thanks you!!!
Love the leg yield to lengthening exercise and the short diagonal to a 10 meter!!! Would love to see ya do a video on canter lengthening.
Yes me too!!
Perfect timing and I love the leg yield exercise!
Secret Sauce and Scrambled Eggs are a go-together!! Once again you have chunked it down and made it simple.
Really enjoying your videos so clearly explained thank you. 😊
I'm so glad! Thank you! Please consider subscribing as it helps me out a lot!
I'm doing to many long diagonal. This is great. I guess one can use this advice also in a big figure 8 lengthening in between circles. Thanks coach.
Let me know how it goes!
Awesome. Very helpful.
thank you for all your very informative, clear and precise videos. hello from French Guiana
I'm working exactly on THIS lately, so muchas gracias, Amelia ! Luna's evasion: no thanks; I'll just not get in front of your leg. My amazing trainer and I did the circle exercises very recently. So helpful. We'll work on the ten meter circles this weekend! Thank you!
This exercises seem super helpful! Will definitely try, thank you! 😊
Love your tips there great! Also beautiful horse ❤️
going to do this tomorrow and friday in prep for a clinic on Saturday! wish me luck :)

Ist amazing this video thanks!!
Great video Amelia, I do struggle with this so this video has really helped me, can't wait to try it ... beautiful horse by the way ....thankyou x🐴🤗💕
I am considering the First Level Course. Approximately how long is the course? And thanks for these tips today!
My horse is built like this grey horse. He actually enjoys leg yeilding so I can't wait to try these exercises.
My horse id only 14.2hh and he is a round ball. Its not easy to supple him.
I love your self talk suggestion Amelia -“under, under” thinking of that inside hind stepping under then “slower, bigger” for the lengthening of the stride. And using a posting trot is a great tip too! - My fellow really ‘listens to my rhythm in posting trot so it really helps him to understand I’m not asking him to go faster. Thanks.
Your videos are always inspiring and energizing! I can’t wait to get to the barn tomorrow to try out these exercises!! Thanks!!
Great lesson. This is one of those skills I can get lost in the multitasking of. The times I’ve been able to bring it all together successfully I feel like Wonder Woman 😆
Good video!
Great video ; teaching me 3 y/o pre stallion trot lengthening now
Definitely going to try this. I also like to do a schouderin on the short side to set the horse up and then ride the diagonal in lengthening trot. Saw that from a famous Dutch trainer in Holland. This you can use in a test very easily
Mercurio is such a cutie!
Thank you Amelia, brilliant video 💕
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing Amelia by the end of this video he was really lengthening and proving how your methods work very well 😊❤️
So helpful thank you!!
Thanks for watching and subscribing Heidi! So glad it's helping you!
Can you do a video on how to get a heavy horse lighter? Especially through transitions? My horse always dives down and pulls on my hands!
While in a rising trot, it appears that you use your legs during the sitting phase. If this is correct, it is most probable that while in rising trot it would be preferable to rise on the inside diagonal when you leg yield. The timing your inside leg influencing the horses inside hind(while it is off the ground) would be more exacting.
Rising on the outside diagonal seems more exacting if you are one that uses your leg aids in the rising phase which is far less common in riders.
Would love to hear what you think about this. I have found it most helpful as I do not think you can influence a horses hind leg so much when it is on the ground, but you can more so while it is going forward into the air.
Wow I am sooo happy I found your account! Thank you so much and keep posting amazing videos like these!!,🤩🤩🤩🤩
Glad you like them!
Thank you, helpful. My trainer has me adjust my posting, bigger for bigger stride, a little forward for coming back. What aids are you using with the exercises?
Yes! Adjusting your posting really helps!
My horse is quite small but she has amazing extension. The only thing is my teacher always tells me that I have to let her mouth go more, because I am inhibiting her from really getting her hind legs out but if I do so there is no controlling her and much less bringing her back. Apart from doing 10m circles, which I will definetly start doing, is there any other exercise I can do to get her to not run off and to be able to bring her back without pulling on her mouth?
I love your videos btw!!! I have gotten so much better at riding thank to you. Thank you so much❤️❤️
Such a help.. thank you!!! Amelia.. how are you asking - is there an aid? to go from smaller higher stride to longer stride - I'm trying to see what you're doing with seat / leg / rein but so subtle!!
Glad you found this helpful! Yes - you will use your leg aid to go to a longer stride and then half-halt to come back to a smaller stride. Here's another video to help explain more! amelianewcombdressage.com/dressage-training/how-to-ride-the-medium-trot-lengthening-trot/
Reading the comments. Perhaps some of the problems were are all having is our aids aren't correct. Please explain the aids for us. My horse is very fussy..just doing an aid sets him off. So lots of repetition needed. Your new horse is a beauty btw.
Not about trot lengthening, video was great! What is your footing mixture and how deep is it? I have a crowned arena and my footing tends to get too deep on the rail all the way around especially after rainy weeks. I’m looking to add synthetic but not sure what I want to use just yet. Yours looks amazing. TIA😊
Hi thank you very much what do you Think about using collected trot, some steps piaffe before lenghtening in the 20 mt circle
Can you explain what you’re doing for the slower and bigger part? Like what your body is doing.
Hi Amélia! Is this horse Mercúrio? What breed is him? He looks so much like a Lusitano or PRE
He's a PRE! :)
Saludos a buena hora el vídeo , una de las mejores formas de introducir el alargamiento.
Those are good exercises, thanks for sharing! I feel I can get the length of stride in rising trot, but I have difficulty keeping it or getting it as good in sitting trot. Do you have any helpful tips for seat training to help with that? Thank you! / Elaine & Grizzly from Sweden.
Try starting the lengthening in posting trot, then once you have developed it, go to the sitting trot!
This was amazing exersices 👍🏻😃
Very helpful thank you! Except my horse doesn't rush in the trot when asked to lengthen, he keeps trying to hop into canter instead.
Amelia how do you know exactly what I need when I need it 😄😂
Amelia. Can you tell me if it is better to put leg on in rising trot , when you rise or when you sit. Many riders use leg when they sit but if you are on the correct diagonal the inside hind would be on the ground so there would be little influence. Thank you. I’ve searched on google and there are varying opinions.
is it like when u sit the horse more on the hind legs and then tell them up and forwards yet keep the same tempo?
Hi Amalie, Yes that is the right idea!
@@AmeliaNewcombDressage thank you very much now I know that too 😻 I just started working my horse more on the hind legs so I'm just starting to notice how it works 😹 he is a very dedicated horse but he dosen't know how it works and when to do it both getting on the hind legs and the riding upwards.. neither do I.. so we are gonna keep working on that first do you have any videos you might think help on this?? 😺
I wished I can do that
My horse simply wouldn't push off the hind end. No bigger step, lack of rythem. He was most happy staying at a medium trot and not varying at all between gaits. I worked so hard on the basics with little results, questioning if of lost my touch. Finally was diagnosed with severe hock arthritis in the LH at 8 years old. First presented discomfort at 5, injections done and lameness didn't return, but it progressed so quickly in the next years injections no longer helped. Just saying this bc don't bang your head against the wall on training. Vet issues explain a lot even when your trainer is pushing you.
Yes. True. I’m sorry to hear about your horses back. Thanks for sharing your story!
Looked for your links to first level course, but didn’t find them in comments ?
Like many here commenting I’m not sure the precise aids to employ for lengthening, to post slower and bigger - is it posting higher and more firmly with calf at a slower rhythm? What happens with reins? If you get a few steps, just keep asking more steps next time ? Is that the way ?
I'm horses lover
I have a question. Would you recommend saddle fitting for 4 year horse, will their body change a lot ? I have a saddle that fits but is was not fitted. How do you personally get saddles for horses? Thank you
What kind of saddle do you use on Mercurio. I have a Lusitano mare that is super wide and I have a hard time finding her a saddle. Using right now a DP saddle but I am curious about if Mercurio is like that. I know he is a PRE
My horses evasion in the lengthen is to canter
Hi, i have and appaloosaxp.r.e. mare, and She can do very well leg yealds, and all the other lateral movements. But when we do medium trot, and i practice them 3/4time per lesson, She Always go fast but extend well. I tried to do big/slow/big, but She doesnt extend so much. You can see some of my videos in my Channel in the playlist "vlog gare", and theese are my show videos. Your videos are great to learn from🙂 thank you
Keep working on suppleness with leg yields. You can also try with cavaletti!

I struggle with this. He doesn't lengthen he gets faster. Thank you
Hello, what does it mean slower bigger?
Great question! When you post, you rise slightly slower and slightly more out of the saddle to as him to take longer steps.
where abouts are you?? Just curious....
I have trouble getting trot longer
