    I have wanted to move two Germany for a long time. I contacted the consulate about 20 years ago asking about getting citizenship through ancestry. I feel this is rather unfair, as my dad was German but left after WWII. When he moved to Canada he was forced to renounce his citizenship, since I guess, people weren't to keen on having Germans from Germany in their country. The rules for citizenship through relatives only works if the relative is a current citizen. My dad is now dead. We also asked if he could get some compensation from the war, but he never pursued this. He was one of the young kids who had to walk ahead of the tanks looking for landmines. Needless to say, he had a lot of post war drama that never left him. Despite all that, I would love to move to German - it is a very beautiful country. So, do you know if any rules have changed the relate to my situation? I'm now nearly 60 and just place to retire.

    • @traveleconomics
      @traveleconomics  2 года назад +3

      The important thing here is to determine what was his citizenship at the time of your birth. Did he lose it before or after you were born?

    If you wish to avoid some of the taxes maybe it would be possible to rotate every 3 months between Schwegen and non EU European countries or something like that? :)

    • @traveleconomics
      @traveleconomics  3 года назад +5

      That doesn't really matter. Staying in a country for 3 months in a year usually does not trigger tax residency. What you have to do is establish yourself somewhere with low taxes, which will be your tax residency. Then you can travel to wherever you want. Most countries trigger tax residency when you spend more than 183 days per year on them (there are exceptions and many details, but that is the general rules)

    I'm Godwin from Ghana, please I went for a Schengen visa interview and I was asked:
    1 Are you traveling with someone? I said no
    2 Purpose of travelling to Germany. I'm attending a trade congress
    4 what is the congress about? I answered
    Then she asked about my budget for purchasing some of the products... I answered, No as it was stated in my application but she was going back and forth with me, I stood by my words and she later said something that I couldn't get so I asked her to COME AGAIN and she said IS FINE without saying anything again, she scanned my Documents and gave my receipt to me
    Please is that a RED FLAG?

    Sorry if I missed this does ancestry help to facilitate residence?

      It does not facilitate your residence but it may grant you the right to citizenship. Do you know her place of birth? Do you have some of her documents?

      Great video! Can a US citizen who has a German mother ( and has her mothers key paperwork) apply for citizenship through ancestry from inside Germany ? Or must that happen in the German consulate in the US? For example, if they are in the country ( Germany) for language school- could the application begin while in Germany instead?

      If both your parents were Americans and just staying there in the US base, and nobody acquired German citizenship while living there and no German ancestors, they probably do not have the right to German citizenship.

      if a company is willing to sponsor your work visa, you can stay based on that. If you drop out without having a company willing to sponsor your stay (or finding some other legally valid reason to stay), you will not have grounds to renew your residency in the country.
