- A year ago I took the qualifying exam at NMSU and got a masters pass. In order to do a Ph.D., I'd have to retake the exam and do better this time. The results are in.

i am suspect of the fact that the process is literally 2 chances, like if you're weak on some subjects the first time all the second test is checking to see is if you applied your rigor and learning on the subjects you learned you were weak at and rounded out your body of quick-access knowledge

I ended up changing my major that semester from Mechanical Engineering to Computer Science. I did well in both, but I realized it would only get tougher from there, and that I wasn't enjoying it anymore. All the theory and idea work that I loved turned into mathematical nightmares
In this really depressing 2020, we were bound to be saved by someone and it was andrew Dotson with 2 uploads in 3 days!😂❤

You make physics fun with your shits and giggles and that is what i was missing before i made the decision to choose physics. My teachers just teach it and dont really show what makes physics so great but you do.

Congratulations man! I was in the same situation with my Ph.D. in pure mathematics at Case Western Reserve University. I only made it to Master’s pass on the first try but made it to Ph.D. pass on the second (and final) try. Those qualifying exams are a nightmare and they take out so much out of you. But I’m so happy that you made it through the hardest hurdle since everything else (while still stressful) is relatively easier than those damn exams! Congrats and keep making these videos about your grad school journey! Best wishes from a fellow graduate student/Ph.D. candidate 😊

I can't imagine the stress and relief you felt went passing this exam. Instead of an exam, it sounds more like a HUGE hurdle you had to clear in order to achieve your dreams. I dropped out of physics in undergrad and went to chemistry. I'm a chemist now, but still have a passion for physics. Your channel and your dedication inspires me to want to study physics again!
Hey man... big fuckin congrats for straight up passing this, I know how stressful this thing can be!!! I got “pass at the masters level” my first time too, and then got the same score the second time, but got “pass at the PhD level” because they talked to my advisor and he said they should keep me :). I graduated summer 2018 with the PhD and now im a physics lecturer at USC :). Someone else in my dept failed both times but the dept let them take an oral exam and they are graduating this semester. I think the exam is pretty outdated and hopefully more depts start to get rid of it... I don’t think it’s worth the stress, but either way, you killed it the right way congrats!!! (also we called it the "screening exam".... the qualifying exam was 3 years later involving a presentation about our research etc...)

I am graduating with my undergrad in Astrophysics this semester, but I don't plan to go to grad school right away. However, I have a lot of friends that are pursuing that track, and they are also very stressed out, and it genuinely makes me excited to see other people to succeed in their goals. Way to go dude! 👍🍾

I’m a PH.D. (Neuroscience) and I know the anxiety and excitement surrounding this whole process. Congratulations! As far as what to call yourself, at my university we were called “doctoral candidates” once we passed the qualifying exams.
That test sounds insane, I just took a test on time dilations, length contractions, simultaneity of events and other Galilean transforms and I was stressed out of my mind I can’t imagine 8 hours

This is so different compared to my uni! Our “qualifying” exams aren’t a huge deal, the closer equivalent is our preliminary exams which we need to pass before qualifying. There are six subject areas and we need to pass (pass/fail) in three of our choice, exams offered at the end of every semester.
Thank god it’s only three because I can’t solve PDEs to save my life, even if I was allowed to use sin(x)=x...
Additional Note: In our department, for those having difficulty with preliminary exams, the general attitude is to “master out”. We don’t formally have a masters program, but it is almost always acquired over the program. So if you’re having difficulty with finishing the prelims, generally you move to finish a masters in the next year, and then leave the program to pursue other things.
This whole process sounds extremely stressful and makes me even more glad OSU doesn't make you pass an 8 hour exam to get to be a phd student

Congrats, congrats, congrats !!!😊. I am soo happy for you. Go finish that PhD and discover something groundbreaking in your field. We're all with you. I am going to be having my CAIE for O2 in April ( basically my most important exams yet). It's going to determine if get to study in a good A-level(basically last two years of highschool) collage and if I can study my desired subject, which are Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Furthur maths. If I fail then I won't get to study them so I won't be able to become a researcher (at least not in Physics and Math). It's starting to stressful but listening to this gives me some hope.

@@michaelking8391 Not really, Electrical Engineering learn on average more than physics students about electricity and magnetism in both theory and applications, but it may be taught at slower speed in engineering.

I'm actually very curious, I'm an undergrad Physics/Math major and I'm planning on getting a PhD in physics so I can also become a researcher.
Now that you're on that track and learning more about it, can you share as much info about it as possible? I don't know what it takes to get a PhD and the internet does explain somewhat but not in decent detail.
01LincLS I know you’re asking Andrew but I can try to help. The best advice I could give is, it depends on the school. Choose a few schools you might want to go to for your PHD, and look at the requirements. Also figure out what you probably want to do your PHD in. Take as many physics electives in undergraduate that you can. You’ll probably have to take a similar test he took to get in, and that’s probably the hardest part, getting into a school. The reason I say this is, if you’re getting a PHD, that’s probably 8 more years of schooling. I’m not saying this to discourage, my point is this: if you’re willing to spend that much time to get that upper education, you’re obviously passionate about it. With passion comes hard work, and hard work beats natural talent in college every time.

01LincLS watch Simon Clarke’s video series about him pursuing his PhD. He documented a few years of his life while all he was doing was grinding and researching to get it, one of the best and most informative series on RUclips.
I'll add my 2 cents... Once you're looking a grad schools, the important thing is the research they are doing, not the name of the school. If you think you know where you want to go, take a class as a non-degree seeker. This will let you get a feel for the department to see if it's a good fit but it also gives you a recommendation from within. Where I went for my PhD, I did that and they told me to not even worry about the other 2 recommendations. They also didn't make me take an entrance exam (it didn't hurt that my teacher was the PhD program adviser). It was also actually the second grad school I looked at. The first school I took graduate EM and did great in the class but just didn't vibe with the dept. Second school felt like where I belonged pretty much right away and I am incredibly glad I took the time to try out a second school.
It really depends on how bad you want to be a physicist? Assuming that you have the acumen to be successful, it all comes down to desire. I loved studying physics all the time. I worked on my PhD constantly. There were many many times that I wanted to quit, but kept on. There will be times that you feel super stupid (because this shit is just that hard), but don't fret, everybody else is feeling the same way; they are just too embarrassed to speak up. Get into a good research group, where you are exposed to the best and the brightest (students, postdocs, collaborators, etc.). Never be satisfied with not understanding something. Always seek to understand from the most basic principles, i.e. don't be an imposter.
@@manavdogra5617 note that Simon Clark is British and did his PhD in the UK, so unless you want to do your PhD in the UK his videos won't nessacarily inform you that much about the process of getting a PhD (from my limited knowledge of American grad education, it's longer and involves smaller pieces of research rather than one long thesis and includes lots of lectures)
However, Simon's videos are brilliant and his work ethic and determination are an inspiration and can be applied to anything. So watch them anyway, just be warned PhDs are different in a lot of countries
