- This year I'm a judge for Mark Lawrence's official Self-Published Fantasy Blog-Off (SPFBO)! This is the tenth year, meaning it is #SPFBOX. 300 indie fantasy books have been chosen at random from those submitted to the competition, and those 300 titles have been divided among 10 judges (bloggers, RUclipsrs, and book reviewers). We each find the one title we choose to go through to the final, and then in phase two we all read the other 9 finalists and a winner is chosen.
Today I'm introducing all 30 of the titles that I'll be reading for the competition!
If you want to know more about #SPFBOX check out Mark Lawrence's blogposts:

Book cover plays a huge role. Young authors should pay more attention to that :)
100% agree! There's a handful of covers here that don't appeal to me at all and I'd probably not pick the book up otherwise, but I'm excited to give them a chance and hope they will surprise me!
@@CapturedInWords Jay, thanks for the book previews, and I hope you enjoy "Gabriel's Journey"! The cover in your video was the original cover designed by the POD publisher I contracted with 21 years ago when I was forty. I never fell in love with the cover, but they controlled that aspect of the book. I left that company years ago and republished through Amazon with new, simple black-and-white cover art. Your link to my book in your description box links to that new cover. Happy reading (x30)! Tom
@@walkingwriter4325 It's actually one of the covers I like more compared to some of the others. It has a fairytale/classic vibe to it that perfectly matches with the whole sentient mouse part
I'm definitely looking forward to starting Gabriel's Journey! Oh that's good to know, I will make sure to use the updated cover in the future when discussing your book :) Cheers!
@@walkingwriter4325I’m really interested in reading this book! I actually like the cover, it has a “cozy country side” vibe to it!
I always giggle whenever a fantasy media says something like "Stranded and alone with nothing but their [nearly omnipotent powers], how will they survive!?" 🤣
It is so cool that you are serving as a judge for SPFBOX, Jay! Definitely a win for the contest, and I hope it will be a win for you too!
That front curl is rockin', bruh.
That Dragon Thief cover! 😍
Love that cover! Excited to start reading that one soon!
A few really great covers in there! I loved Dragon Thief, By Blood By Salt, and Molten Flux!
I love to see this! As an amateur writer, it's lovely to know there are many ways for people to find and read books that are not yet famous!
I'm so glad you're getting into SPFBO! I've had a good time following the competition the last few years and have found some favorites from the competition.
Cthoma's Fated sounds awesome! I already own Stone and Sky, so I'll be reading that at some point this year. The cover for Dragon Thief immediately caught my attention and I will most likely be reading it at some point as well, even though it looks like it's a bit more YA than I usually read.
SPFBO is such a great event. I participated in SPFBO9, and it truly was the highlight of my year. It was instrumental in introducing me to so many great authors and reviewers. As a new self-published author, I didn't know where to get started, and SPFBO was like having instant family. I can't wait to hear your reviews!
Wonderful intros! Here's to finding many hidden gems! I hope that mine turns out to be one of them for you! (And I'm gonna go ahead and admit that my experience as a linguist in the Marine Corps was a HUGE influence on my work)
That's fantastic to hear! I'm very intrigued by the synopsis of your book and can't wait to get to it! :)
Please ignore my bad pronunciation for 'corps', I only noticed it while editing the video 😂
Awesome! Great group of books there. Hope you have so much fun with Stone & Sky and you get all the nostalgic classic fantasy vibes! 🤙
Can't wait to read Stone & Sky! I listened to the audio teaser on your channel, and it has me hooked 👍
Right on! 🤙 Yeah, Peter does an incredible job narrating too.
Awesome video! So cool you are a SPFBO judge, and you have an interesting variety of books to read. Can't wait to hear what you think of them!
Some very cool ideas! I just began reading novels for the first time in my late 20s, and its very exciting too see that like most things in this day and age, anyone can get their start doing it on their own through the internet and communities. Not that it isnt difficult, but theres freedom to try and put yourself out there! Cant wait to follow this contest and take in all kinds of indie work. So far the best books ive read have primarily been made by smaller niche authors that got discovered by fans of the genre and got some of the attention they deserved!
Jonathan is an amazing person and his book Molten Flux is incredible!
Thanks for reading all the blurbs! By Blood and Salt and Speak the Ocean are on my list.
Oh dude! I'm stoked that you're keen for Molten Flux! It's gonna be a hell of a ride!
Congrats to the judge role man, it is well deserved! 😄💙📚
I'm really glad to see some dark fantasy here too! 😃 It really warms this dark fantasy author's heart! 🥰
The ones I found especially interesting are The Grand Game, Darkness Below & My name is not Alice 😋
P.S. I grew up with Secret of Nimh & American Tail too 🥰, I love them!!! 😍
Some sound great, some sound like hidden wattpad corners. I'm excited lol
Great video and very well spoken. I'm excited to see your individual reviews.
You've got a good batch! Excited for your reviews
Thanks!! I'm excited to see the ones you review as well!
What a fantastic group! Good luck to all.
Congrats. I will have to check some of these out.
Thank you for judging!
I’ve been following SPFBO for a few years now and have found some gems. Many of these titles are jumping out at me. I’ll be looking forward to your thoughts.
I was hoping to have my book ready for SPFBO this year, but super excited for this year’s nominees! Shooting for SPFBO11 (Spiff-Boll)
Hey, I just found this! So excited to see what you think of The Spark, and sorry for the terrible Amazon setup! I've been trying to get it to work.
Hey jay I have a idea for a video make a video about Top ten upcoming fantasy book sequels which you are most excited or everyone is so hyped about it like Stormlight archive book 5 please reply your thoughts I request you please reply please
Compaction of self published fantasy book 🎉
Molten Flux sounds friggin' cool!
Most of these sound really interesting👀
Lots of great-sounding books!
I have "Dawn of the Black Sun". Good times
So excited. Remember to pace yourself so you don’t have to read them all at the last minute 🙂
Congratulations Jay, don't become the Mad King of the Seven Shelves with the power lol
📚😈👑📚
Seems like such a wonderfully diverse batch of books, I really hope you find some great gems from these! I have personally heard super good things about Molten Flux and Stone & Sky, curious to hear your takes on them. Good luck & have fun 🤩
Thanks! I hope so too! Those two definitely stood out to me, they both sound like something I'd really enjoy. Excited to get to them!
I see my buddies Timo Burnham and ZS Diamanti!
I've been really wanting to read more self pub fantasies too but I am very guilty at not wanting to pick stuff up that doesn't have many reviews or a super perfect cover.
As someone who also reads a lot of romance, I know that indie authors can be absolutely amazing but for some reason indie fantasy scares me!
I added 12 of these to be extremely long TBR so we will see how it goes!
6:55 as a fmr Arabic Linguist in the US Navy, your pronunciations of "Arabic" and "Corps" were painful 😅🤣 no worries tho! 😋
Your lists are always incredible. Because of you I just picked up Malice by John Gwynne, The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie and The Bone Ships by RJ Barker. Thanks buddy.
I think you should read Archibald Lox by Darren Dash. My favourite author of all time.
I read the Darkness Below and am slowly reading it sequeal. It is has tons of nods to Lovecraft.
Awesome!! I'm excited to start that one!
Your father, Luke Perry should be proud of all your success without trading on his name.
I played a druid on WoW for 15 years. I’ll have to check out that shapeshifter book lol
molten flux seems a bit like Mortal Engines' City-Vehicles and Robot Wars' mega-mecha (which acted as backdrops to the action)
It definitely reminds me of Mortal Engines as well!
Spot on! And I am planning a Robot Wars-like spin off too, but keep that a secret!
@@Jonw_author 😱!!!!!🥰
Looking forward to it!!
I was wondering, do you use any apps to help you keep track of your books, like Goodreads, Fable or Story Graph? And if you do, which one do you like the best?
Ah yes, the good ol’ US marine corpse.
I realized I pronounced it wrong while editing lol, my bad
I never asked but is your background music from RuneScape?
Haha yes! Always been a fan of Runescape and recently found out they let RUclipsrs use the soundtrack without any copyright issues. I don't use that music for all my videos but have been using it more recently
@@CapturedInWords lol Everytime I hear it, I think that sounds like RuneScape lol. That's super cool I didn't know Jagex let people use the music from the game.
I am writing my own indie fantasy. “The sun shines upon the kingdom” book 1 of the kingdom trilogy.
Never been this early to anything 🤣
You should check out some JinYong's translated novels. Probably the hands down universally recognized best martial art fantasy books ever.
One of your assigned books seems to me 100% written by A.I. I won't say which one but I look forward to your review (and all of your reviews for these books). Happy reading!
I’m really excited for you to read more queer books, I don’t think you’ve read many but you seem super cool and very open minded which even if your not queer I am still very excited for your opinion
Did you read the ACOTAR Series by Sarah J. Maas?
They mostly sound like trashy low brow wastes of time.
Except for the Goddess of Memory one...
