I love that Pete digs acts as diverse as Return to Forever, Mike Stern, Pat Metheny, Jethro Tull, Genesis, Tony Williams, Frank Zappa, Black Sabbath, Symphony X, Whitesnake, etc. He just loves music, period!
My choice for today is Dreamboat Annie by Heart. This album has been selected by many and I can't add much to what others have said. It's a great mix of heavy and light. The Wilson sisters went to high school in my hometown and my cousin's claim to fame is being in Glee Club with Ann. Hang in there Pete. You do a fantastic job!
30) Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run There was no album released in 1975 that I anticipated with so much excitement as I did Born To Run. I became a huge Bruce Springsteen fan immediately upon hearing Greetings From Asbury Park, NJ, and my admiration for the man and his music only grew upon hearing his second album, The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle. So when I heard that there was a new Springsteen album due to be released, my expectations were incredibly high. Needless to say Born To Run exceeded any and all of my expectations, and then some. It's been fifty years and innumerable listens, and I still can't believe how great this record is! On Born To Run, Springsteen's songwriting had improved as he moved away from the mystical, Dylanesque lyrics of his first two albums to develop a storytelling style all his own. Born To Run is teeming with street life, from young lovers to two-bit hustlers. It's teeming with boys in their hot rods chasing girls through the (presumably New Jersey) night. What all of these characters have in common is a burning desire for something that's missing from their lives, to grab their slice of the pie in mid-'70s America, shake off the dust of the dead end world they inhabit and seize whatever they can of the good life. And I can't even begin to explain how much that desire for escape and excitement resonated with a high school kid growing up working class in small town New Jersey. Springsteen married these stories with that Phil Spector-like "Wall of Sound" to create a cinematic aural landscape. Springsteen breathes so much life into his characters that you can almost picture the faces that go along with every name - Mary, Scooter, Terry, Wendy, Eddie, Cherry, The Rat, and the Barefoot Girl. You know their movements, you realize their motivations, you sense their fears. As Springsteen sings over the swell of his band, there is a sense of urgency in his voice, like he truly believes in the kids in his songs - so much so that we can't help but believe in them as well. His vocals blend well with the attitude of the record - gritty and tough, like the guitar-wielding, leather-jacketed hood leaning his lanky frame against the big, black saxophone player on the album's gatefold cover. I could go on endlessly with a song-by-song description of this amazing album, but instead, I'd just like to offer a few comments about the three greatest songs from Born To Run - maybe the three greatest songs in Springsteen's legendary career. "Thunder Road" opens the album with a piano and harmonica duet, and as Springsteen begins to sing, you can almost visualize the players as if on stage. On a few of the album's tracks, The E Street Band comes at you full force from the get-go, but on "Thunder Road", they move in steadily around Roy Bittan's piano. Though the piano is ultimately absorbed into the band, you can still hear the keys calling out to you to strike out and take that one last chance to make it real. By the time the song ends with Clarence Clemons' triumphant sax blasts, we're ready to pull out of this town full of losers, determined to win. On the album's monumental title track Springsteen and co-producer Jon Landau place instruments on top of each other in layers so that you could listen to it dozens of times and still pick up something you hadn't heard the time before. Drums, bass, saxophone, a multitude of guitars, organ, glockenspiel, etc. , all intertwined in a swirling, majestic crescendo. The relatively simple lyrics take on a certain gravity and importance thanks to the dizzying carousel-like feeling of the music. On Born To Run's remarkable finale, "Jungleland", Springsteen uplifts the gritty urban tale with a string section opening, and The E Street Band plays this street ballet for all they're worth. The song captures the feel of the nightcrawlers as they go about their business before the sun comes up the next day (Clarence Clemons' long sax solo makes an ideal 5:30 AM wakeup call). Bruce Springsteen made it big thanks to Born To Run, but he also shows with this album that life doesn't always end up the way you think it will (I know mine sure hasn't). But life is a journey, and every now and then you need to take a chance, even a risk, if you want to get to that place where you really want to go. 1) Gary Wright - The Dream Weaver 2) Emmylou Harris - Elite Hotel 3) Black Oak Arkansas - Ain't Life Grand 4) Bob Seger - Beautiful Loser 5) ZZ Top - Fandango! 6) Eagles - One Of These Nights 7) Linda Ronstadt - Prisoner In Disguise 8) Neil Young - Zuma 9) Bob Marley & The Wailers - Live! 10) Strawbs - Ghosts 11) Jethro Tull - Minstrel In The Gallery 12) Angel - S/T 13) Crack The Sky - S/T 14) Rush - Fly By Night 15) Grand Funk Railroad - Caught In The Act 16) KISS - Alive! 17) Ian Hunter - S/T 18) Hank Williams Jr. - Hank Williams Jr. And Friends 19) Elton John - Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy 20) Queen - A Night At The Opera 21) David Bowie - Young Americans 22) The Who - The Who By Numbers 23) Thin Lizzy - Fighting 24) Budgie - Bandolier 25) Nazareth - Hair Of The Dog 26) Sweet - Desolation Boulevard 27) Be-Bop Deluxe - Futurama 28) Foghat - Fool For The City 29) Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here 30) Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run
Such a great write up of a wonderful album !! Chris you out guessed me on this one. I moved it from #2 to my #1. When I listened to it last night I felt it deserved some love over my Led Zeppelin album. I also felt that you would have it as your top pick. I may add a couple of things tomorrow, but you pretty much covered the bases here. Nice Going !!
2. Led Zeppelin--"Physical Graffiti"--The quintessential Zeppelin album. Has all the elements and what makes it great is the depth and variety. Beyond the well-known tracks like "Kashmir" and "Trampled Underfoot," you get absolute gems like "The Rover," "The Wanton Song," and "Ten Years Gone," one of their best ballads that foreshadowed the power ballad concept that fueled so many 80s hair bands.
Today my pick #2 is Led Zeppelin Physical Graffiti, one of my favorite double albums ever, so good. Not a bad song on here, my favorites are Trampled under foot, the wanton song, houses of the holy, the rover, Kashmir, down by the seaside, night flight. 2. Led Zeppelin- Physical Graffiti 3. Black Sabbath- Sabotage 4. Bad Company- Straight Shooter 5. Rush- Fly by night 6. Lynyrd Skynyrd- Nuthn’ Fantasy 7. Pink Floyd- Wish you were here 8. Eagles- One of these nights 9. Queen- A night at the Opera 10. Wings- Venus & Mars 11. Steely Dan- Katy Lied 12. Styx- Equinox 13. Jeff Beck- Blow by Blow 14. ZZ Top- Fandango 15. The Doobie Brothers- Stampede 16. Kiss- Alive 17. Fleetwood Mac- Fleetwood Mac 18. Rainbow- Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow 19. Little Feat- The Last record album 20. Rush- Caress of Steel 21. Alice Cooper- Welcome to my Nightmare 22. Outlaws- Outlaws 23. Marshall Tucker band- Searchin’ for a Rainbow 24. Blackfoot- No Reservations 25. Charlie Daniels- Nightrider 26. The Who- Who by numbers 27. ELO- Face the music 28. Bob Seger- Beautiful Loser 29. Foghat- Fool for the city 30. Ted Nugent- Ted Nugent 31. Bachman-Turner Overdrive- Head on
2: RUSH- Fly By Night I started with the debut album in '79. Never hearing them on the radio in the DC area. Hard and heavy with the wail of a banshee! So I buy the Archives trio, the set of the first three albums. Since I had almost worn out the eight-track, it was time to dive into the other two. I must say that Caress did not get played nearly as much back in the old days. Fly by Night was a progression with the addition of the Professor. Continuing the heaviness, hard cranking tone of Alex guitars, and adding the complex bass and drums of two of our rock maestros. Crafting his falsetto to fit into the songs Another step in their journey. Blasting off with Anthem. They were blending smooth choruses into their heavy Prog, gave a few of these songs a radio friendly tilt: Best I Can, Fly by Night, Making Memories and ln the End. But of course Bytor and the Snow Dog their original epic, still my 3rd fave. Alex mastering the axe both heavy and with great finesse. What a jam! The version on All the World's a Stage is great! Just shows how great they were live and playing their complex studio tunes with super skills. And last but not least, when it's snoozy time, the gentle Rivendell has great atmospheric guitar, washing over the Tolkien poetry. I love the Rolly Trinity!
#2 Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti All month long this has been sitting as my #1. But at the last moment I pulled a switch for the top spot. I mean everybody raves about this Led Zeppelin record…and deservingly so. But it’s basically a greatest hits album for lack of a better phrase. The songs are leftovers from several albums assembled with new tunes. And it’s truly incredible !! Three stone cold classics are “The Rover”(my favorite tune here), “Bron-Yr-Aur” (about the place where they wrote some songs…is it acoustic or electric?…I’m not sure but it makes me flash my own memories). & “The Wanton Song”(the keyboard and guitar interplay is just stunning !!). Other great tunes are “Kashmir”, “Night Flight”(would be a hit for any other band), “In My Time of Dying”, “Houses of the Holy”(how did this not make the album of the same name?) & “Sick Again”. Special mention are songs that I never used to listen to; but now I find to be great …”Trampled Under Foot”(weirdly compelling), “Down By the Seaside” & the remarkable “Ten Years Gone”. And “Custard Pie” (I still am not crazy about). The other songs are very forgettable for me. So it’s not a perfect album, but most bands would go to the ends of the Earth to have it in their catalogs. It’s bemusing to me, but why would a fan of Rock music spend time on growling heaviness when you have magnificent gems like Physical Graffiti to listen to ?
My number 2: Kansas, Song for America Well, it had to be Kansas right? Song for America is my favorite Kansas album so far, but with competition from several other albums, including their 2016 come-back album, The Prelude Implicit, which I like a lot.
Pick #2 - Queen - A Night at The Opera. It's not necessarily my favorite Queen album, but the Prophet Song is still killer. And it took some time, but Bohemian Rhapsody ultimately became one of the most influential rock songs ever made.
Hi Pete & everyone. Dave here. I hope things ease up for you in the coming days. My pick today is A NIGHT AT THE OPERA by QUEEN. My favourite album by the band, and while we may take this outstanding collection of songs for granted these days, it was so exciting and amazing when it came out in 75. Add to this the fact the songs were written and sung by various members of the band, in a whole range of musical genres. And then there's the musical ambition - Freddie harmonising with himself on the The Prophet's Song; Brian's guitar jazz band on Good Company; and just about everything on Bohemian Rhapsody. I could go on... OK, I won't. That's my number two.
Camel - The Snow Goose. One of the best instrumental Prog Rock albums of the 70's a delight from start to finish, Latimer, Bardens, Ward and Ferguson are at the top of their game here on my favourite Camel album. Check out their performance on the O.G.W.T from '75 a great performance.
Day30-Pink Floyd-Wish You Were Here. The 1975 album by pretty much everybody’s favorite progressive rock band Pink Floyd. This album sits in the middle between two incredible albums Dark Side and Animals. Songs like the title track,Have a cigar and the epic Shine on you Crazy Diamond. This is in my top 3 albums. This is my number 30 pick.
Hi Pete, I see you've cued up early again so I'm guessing things are still hectic over there. Thanks for trying to keep SoT going when you've got so much on your plate, we really appreciate it. Thinking of you, and hope you turn a corner soon. All the best from the UK
# 2 for me - Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here. This is one of those albums that I heard for the 1st time in my college suite, hanging out with my college buds.

I see this has been cued early today which I hope doesn't mean things are too bad. My best wishes to you Pete, and reiterate very grateful thanks for keeping the entertainment on the channel going. At difficult times though you have to put yourself and your family first. Okay my no. 2 choice is perhaps my most personally important gateway album into the world of Classic Rock. It was the first real hard rock album I bought and the one that began my obsession with this music and began my serious album buying and collecting, STRAIGHT SHOOTER by BAD COMPANY. Now I should state I don't necessarily think this is the second greatest album released this year, but is it my 2nd favourite? Hell yeah. Possibly my 2nd favourite of all time, partly because of its significance in my life and beaten only into 1st place by tomorrow's choice. I will say that STRAIGHT SHOOTER contains my personal favourite collection of vocal performances gathered on any album. Paul Rodgers was at the peak of his powers here sounding immense, whether belting out a raw, unfettered bluesy heavy riff rocker or crooning a soulful emotional ballad. This is an album of greater sonic extremes than the debut, never is that shown up better than on the albums 2 most celebrated tracks, Feel Like Makin' Love and Shooting Star which blend soft acoustic verses with crushing heavy powerchord laden choruses. Rockers like Good Lovin' Gone Bad, Deal With The Preacher and Wild Fire Woman all rock harder than anything on the first album, giving this a greater sense of sonic dynamics. Mick Ralphs' riffs and tone is positively lethal here. Elsewhere there's the marvellous rnb soaked pop rock of Weep No More with its string interjections, the yearning ballad Anna and the lilting closing Call On Me with its rippling piano motif. The band are on fire here, the songwriting consistently strong and you have those wonderful vocals. Why wouldn't this be an irresistible gateway to an impressionable teenager?
2. Jethro Tull - Minstrel in the Gallery 3. Roxy Music - Siren 4. Van der Graaf Generator - Godbluff 5. Nektar - Recycled 6. Kiss - Dressed to Kill 7. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here 8. # 2 Pink Floyd: Wish You Were Here Yes, it is an obvious choice and many have already mentioned it this month. But, at least for me, “Wish You Were Here” is the quintessential prog record and the best introduction to this music genre. I shall never get tired of listening to this album until the day I shall have left the building. # 3 Mike Oldfield: Ommadawn # 4 Fleetwood Mac: Fleetwood Mac # 5 Kansas: Masque # 6 Led Zeppelin: Physical Graffiti # 7 Steve Hackett: Voyage of the Acolyte # 8 Camel: The Snow Goose # 9 Gentle Giant: Free Hand # 10 UFO: Force it # 11 Triumvirat: Spartacus # 12 Neu!: Neu! ‘75 # 13 Neil Young & Crazy Horse: Zuma # 14 Hawkwind: Warrior on the Edge of Time # 15 Van der Graaf Generator: Godbluff # 16 Renaissance: Scheherazade & Other Stories # 17 Patti Smith: Horses # 18 Queen: A Night at the Opera # 19 Chris Squire: Fish Out of Water # 20 Steely Dan: Katy Lied # 21 Manfred Mann’s Earth Band: Nightingales and Bombers # 22 Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention: One Size Fits All # 23 Neil Young: Tonight’s the Night # 24 Peter Hammill: Nadir’s Big Chance # 25 Be-Bop Deluxe: Futurama # 26 Tangerine Dream: Rubycon # 27 10cc: The Original Soundtrack # 28 Joni Mitchell: The Hissing of Summer Lawns # 29 Jeff Beck: Blow by Blow # 30 Ted Nugent: Ted Nugent # 31 Supertramp: Crisis? #2 Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti This masterpiece should be my favorite album of 1975 but… It has powerful hard rock ("Custard Pie", "The Rover", "The Wanton Song", "Sick Again" and "Houses of the Holy"), funk ("Trampled Under Foot"), acoustic songs ("Down by the Seaside"), blues reinvented (In My Time of Dying"). songs that were left out of previous albums and new compositions. It's an album that I never tire of listening to. 1975. Lep Zep was at the heights like never before and never since. Fleetwood mac white album. 1st album with buckingham and nicks. Excellent stuff. Monday morning is a classic. World turning is great. Rhiannon is all time classic. My fav is Im so afraid. But i love the longer live version off their live album .
Great choice there, my favourite track also is I'm So Afraid and has been since I first bought the album all those years ago. Yes and the live version is great too!
Hello Pete and everyone. Today’s choice will probably be the single most popular selection by everyone in the SoT community this month (including Pete on day 1): 2. Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti There is nothing I can add to what has already been said, except to pick out my favourite songs. Hello Bryan, l knew this album was going to be on your list. I also knew that my choice today wasn't 😊 I've got a feeling that tomorrow though we could have a match. It's a thing with me that on most albums l prefer the shorter songs, and it's the case with Physical Graffiti. Even Kashmir which is a favourite could be a little bit shorter for me. And on that bombshell I'll say goodbye! Cheers Bryan and take care.

Day 30's pick is Toys In The Attic by Aerosmith. They were on their way to becoming huge in The US but they meant very little elsewhere in the world. The chart positions verify that. Number 7 in France and Canada, number 79 in Australia and number 11 in The US. That's all. It would be years before they became more than just a 'strictly for connoisseurs' cult band in The UK. The fact they didn't tour outside of North America probably didn't help their cause. As far as I can recall and I may be wrong, their only UK appearance during the 1970's was a "special guest' slot of the 1977 Reading Festival, on the Saturday night bill under Thin Lizzy. The album kicks off with the title track. A frantic 3 minutes of rock n roll riffage. Uncle Salty up next and the vocal melody on this seems to have been stolen by Shania Twain for one of her hits (can't remember which one, sorry), because whenever I hear it, I start think of La Twain sashaying about. Maybe the country-ish swing inspired her (or whoever wrote her songs). Some tasty slide guitar from Joe Perry introduces Adam's Apple. A mid tempo rocker with some excellent ensemble playing by the whole band. Joey Kramer showing what an under rated drummer he is. Walk This Way is up next and I shouldn't really have to say anything about this. You'll have heard it a billion times. This original version motors along at a fair old pace. You can see why it was such a huge hit when Run DMC got their hands on it. It's got a funky feel to it, even with the guitars playing such a prominent role. Big Ten Inch Record closes out side 1 with a swing. Apart from Steven Tyler's Finbarr Saunders-esque double entendres, this could've been an old 1950's song. A horn section providing the base for Perry to add some sweet guitar licks. Side 2 opens with an Aerosmith classic. Sweet Emotion is haunting with a talk box adding an atmosphere before the famous riff takes over. No More No More is a hidden gem. melodic but with a hard edge. Understated piano giving it a rock n roll feel. Round And Round is a rare Brad Whitford co-write. Round And Round is heavy. A Sabbath-esque opening riff with Tyler going full on Robert Plant. Whitford gets his time in the spotlight, taking the lead guitar solo instead of Joe Perry. Another hidden gem. Final track is the big ballad. You See Me Crying. Am I the only one to hear hints of November Rain in this one? A string section? An overblown guitar solo? They're all there. Joe Perry shines throughout this album, it must be said. Three of the songs turn up on the coke addled Live Bootleg 3 years later. One of the Aerosmith albums that set the legend in motion.

I really hope that everything is working out for you and your family. My pick for day 30 is Pink Floyd : Wish You Were Here. I´m not a huge jazz fusion fan and I haven´t listened to Return To Forever.
Today's pick is Uriah Heep-Return To Fantasy. The next to last album featuring the great David Byron, Return To Fantasy is a solid record. Lots of cool cuts including "Shady Lady". While a definite drop off from the mighty Wonderworld album, Return To Fantasy is an enjoyable listen. Every David Byron album is worth treasuring.
The second last day of January, and time to decide which of my two favourite albums would make it to the top… it has been not an easy decision. Anyway, my pick today goes to 2. QUEEN, A Night At The Opera. Without any doubt, this album has not only the top single hit of the year on it… I even would go so far to assert this is the top single of the decade, maybe the most important and relevant one of all time since the 50s. Of course, it’s about Freddie Mercury’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”, the epic piece everybody knows nowadays. Freddie had big arguing with the record company, because the song was with 6 minutes at double length compared to average single tracks, but he decided to take the risk, and as we now know, he was damn right. This epic song was a world wide hit… and deservedly so. Of course, it should not be only about that song, but about the album in general. And the rest also is great. Each member of the band wrote at least one song on his own. Drummer Roger Taylor wrote “I’m In Love With My Car”, also took the lead vocal on it, and performed the song live a lot of times later. Bassist John Deacon composed “You’re My Best Friend”, which became a second single hit. Guitar hero Brian May wrote and sang lead on songs like “’39” and “Good Company”, and his composition “The Prophet’s Song” became the big second epic piece, beside the Rhapsody from Freddie. Freddie himself also absolutely shines on his piano driven ballad “Love Of My Life”. What a great album. It’s three precursors haven’t been shabby either, but it was this one which has put them on the map world-wide. I guess 29 didn't stick. So here are two: Tommy Bolin - Teaser Lots of styles are covered. Fusion, a little reggae, and plenty of aggressive hard rock. Tommy shows he can sing as well as being a first rate guitarist. Rush - Caress Of Steel Love the dark tone of this record. "The Necromancer" flat out rules, my favorite Rush song. The epic side two paves the way for more prog metal magic next year with 2112. //The Dictators Go Girl Crazy! //Moxy - Moxy //Kansas - Masque //Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here //Black Sabbath - Sabotage //Mahogany Rush - Strange Universe //UFO - Force It //Rory Gallagher - Against The Grain //Patti Smith - Horses //Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Zuma //Artful Dodger - Artful Dodger //Robin Trower - For Earth Below //Alphonse Mouzon - Mind Transplant //Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti //Nazareth - Hair Of The Dog //Willie Nelson - Red Headed Stranger //Steely Dan - Katy Lied //Aerosmith - Toys In The Attic //Scorpions - In Trance //Rush - Fly By Night //Budgie - Bandolier //Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow //Styx - Equinox //MTB - Searchin' For A Rainbow //Lynyrd Skynyrd - Nuthin' Fancy //Deep Purple - Come Taste The Band //Steve Hillage - Fish Rising //ZZ Top - Fandango! Pick #2: Black Sabbath's Sabotage. So originally this was actually going to be my #1 pick but after some thinking I ended up swapping my #1 and #2 choices kind of at the last minute. Still, Sabotage at some points has been my favorite Sabbath album, partially because it truly feels like the most angry Black Sabbath had ever sounded. The whole album is pretty consistent to me, but at this point, Hole In The Sky, Megalomania and The Writ are my three favorites. #31: Bad Company's Straight Shooter #30: Steve Hackett's Voyage of the Acolyte #29: Kiss' Alive #28: ZZ Top's Fandango! #27: Scorpions' In Trance #26: Hawkwind's Warrior On the Edge of Time #25: Nazareth's Hair of the Dog #24: Eloy's Power and the Passion #23: Renaissance's Scheherazade and Other Stories #22: Doobie Brothers' Stampede #21: Jethro Tull's Minstrel in the Gallery #20: Jeff Beck's Blow by Blow #19: Thin Lizzy's Fighting #18: Gentle Giant's Free Hand #17: Supertramp's Crisis? Pick number 30, Queen - A Night at the Opera. Ex-YU pop/rock album: Buldožer - Pljuni istini u oči, released on label Alta, produced and distributed by label PGP RTB.
my album pick today is elton john "captain fantastic and the brown dirt cowboys" fav track is curtains and it is my fav elton song 4 tracks from this album are all in my top 8 or so elton songs "curtains, gotta get a meal ticket, someone saved my life tonite, captain fantastic and the brown dirt cowboy"
Day 30 / Pick # 2 = LED ZEPPELIN - Physical Grafitti. When it's good, it's very good; excellent in fact. But to my mind, there are a few filler tracks which could have been left off of this album to make it more cohesive. As a music consumer in this digital age, it's easy to create an edited playlist for one's devices, however back in about 1976 when I first acquired this behemoth, it was on 8-Track cartridge. It wasn't advisable to use the Fast Forward function too often on those machines, lest ye end up with tape spaghetti. So, to get to the good songs, one had to endure the filler tracks. In that vein, much like The Beatles' White Album; had Physical Grafitti's longer tracks been edited somewhat, and a few of the lesser tracks cut from it, it would have made a very fine single album - a masterpiece in fact. But then, maybe that's just me, I'm only a casual Led Zeppelin fan. Highlights: The Wanton Song; Ten Years Gone; The Rover; and Kashmir.
You have a good point, in terms of a perfect album. however due to their majesty and lack of album output everything we can get from Zep is cool one way or another! We wanted 20 albums!
Day 30. Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run. 😃👍. Released in August 1975. For me, this is the premier American rock album from 1975. This landmark album never gets old. With a rousing Phil Spector-style ‘wall of sound’ treatment, with brass instruments creating muscle and subtle beauty, with big American myths and American working class desperation themes, this album provides the listener with an unforgettable journey of broken dreams and the chance for redemption. Bruce Springsteen created a grand epic masterpiece with the superb work of the E Street Band playing lights out. 🔥. Just put it on and press play! Rock Always! - Heather
My pick today will be Elton John ‘Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy’. It was a toss up between this and tomorrow’s pick all month for my #1. First album I ever bought. Lots of my favorite Elton songs on this one.
Hi Pete sorry things are still difficult for you and I really appreciate your SoT dedication and the fact that you have not just left us all hanging. Hope things sort themselves soon.
Good morning (afternoon, evening or night) or whatever time it may be for you, Pete. Hope this finds your world on a return to a smoother orbit. Outstanding SoT selection today. Personal pick today [with another reminder these are in no particular order]? Heading once again out of the usual SoT fields, the eighteenth studio album by this American country music 'outlaw' singer released on the Columbia label in May 1975 - Red Headed Stranger by Willie Nelson. A concept album about a murderer on the run from the law after killing his wife and her lover. It charted #1 on the US Country albums chart and #28 on the US Billboard 200. It has been certified as multi-platinum in the U.S. and is one of the albums that made Willie such a "recognized artist". Didn't buy this on release since was not interested at the time but 'back-bought' this after coming to Willie's Stardust album in the later 70s/early 80s. The singles? The well-known "Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain" and "Remember Me." An album that earned some more of my musical respect for Willie and was one of the reasons went to see him in concert. Seeing him live was great. This is one of the albums pulled for regular listening and deserves a spot in the list this month as something a little different. Thanks, Pete. Looking forward to see your final choice and if it is another jazz-fusion album.
My last 2 picks are gonna be obvious choices. But they are classics for a reason right? Going with my favorite album from this band and I always put it like this: what's better than a single album by Led Zeppelin? A DOUBLE album by Led Zeppelin! Of course I'm talking Physical Graffiti. An album chock full of awesome songs and there is 0 filler to be had on this great record. Some standout tracks for me are The Rover In My Time of Dyin Ten Years Gone and Kashmir but the whole album is all killer
My Day 30 Pick (and my genuine #2/Runner-Up): Alice Cooper - Welcome to My Nightmare Mr. Cooper's solo debut, after the breakup of the original Alice Cooper band. It kicks off with the epic title track and closes with the mid-tempo rocker "Escape." I also absolutely dig the one-two punch of "Devils Food" and "Black Widow" - two songs bridged by a monologue from the legendary horror icon Vincent Price. Yup, Alice had him before Michael Jackson. The vaudevillian "Some Folks" and ballad "Only Women Bleed" are also personal highlights for me. And "Cold Ethyl" is probably my favorite on the latter half.
Hey Pete! I hope your family situation improves soon. Thanks for keeping the SOT videos coming, in spite of all you have going on. Also, I really enjoyed the videos that Jamie, Ken and Simon have done recently in your absence. Best wishes to you and your family!

Patti Smith ... Horses Honorable Mentions: KISS ... Alive! Berserkley Chartbusters Vol 1 (Various Artists) Mahavishnu Orchestra ... Visions of the Emerald Beyond Why don't people talk about Patti Smith's Horses album as a first American punk album? Her past association with Blue Oyster Cult as a lyricist disqualifies her? The Berserkley Record label collect their first singles by Jonathan Richman, Earth Quake, and others for an early album.

Hi Wayne. I did not have the money to buy the album back then, but bought the beautiful "Sailing" single, and still love the song. So much memories from the time back then. I still consider to get the album at my now quite advanced age ;) Greetings from Germany!
Another awesome choice for today with Chick Corea and his album No Mystery with the jazz fusion hand Return to Forever with an all star lineup have a good Thursday today thanks Pete.🎶🎵📻🎵🎶

Physical Graffiti is the sixth album by the English rock band Led Zeppelin. Released as a double album on 24 February 1975 Kashmir is my fave Zeppelin song off the album!,but the entire album is amazing
Day 30 Elton John - Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. Pete everybody here would agree that music is important but not as important as family. Anyway this album l think was the most eagerly awaited of Elton's releases. I couldn't wait to listen to it for the first time. For many perhaps the last of a phenomenal run of early 70's records. It certainly is a great achievement in its musical account of his and Bernie Taupin's early days of their partnership in creating those wonderful songs. Favourite tracks are Tower of Babel, Tell Me When the Whistle Blows, the title track and the moving Someone Saved My Life Tonight.

@ I believe it’s possible I might see a Mexican Blackbird and Hear it on The X with some Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings. Then go down to the Balinese in my Thunderbird listening to Jailhouse Rock with my Blue Jeans and have a Backdoor Love Affair 😁
@@Starman2112ofKings Great choice, Starman. That’s one of 15 picks that have also made my list. There might have been more if I didn’t limit myself to one album per artist.

2. ABBA - Abba - my favorite ABBA album along with Arrival. SOS is a pop masterpiece, but Mamma Mia and Bang-a-Boomerang are timeless as well. I always had a special place in my heart for So Long, and Intermezzo no. 1 is insane. This album is more even than the first two, without any low-points, as the song-writing had matured. 31. Scorpions - In Trance 30. Nazareth - Hair of the Dog 29. Willie Nelson - Red Headed Stranger 28. Elton John - Rock of the Westies 27. Heart - Dreamboat Annie 26. Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic 25. David Bowie - Young Americans 24. Wings - Venus and Mars 23. The Who - The Who by Numbers 22. Parliament - Mothership Connection 21. Styx - Equinox 20. Foghat - Fool for the City 19. ELO - Face the Music 5. Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti 4. Pink Floyd - Wish you were here 3. Queen - Night at the Opera 2. ABBA - Abba 1. Renaissance - Scheherazade and other Stories
Day 30 Curved Air - Live One of the great unsung prog bands of the 70's shows that they were a dynamic live act. Darryl Way's violin and electronics, along with Francis Monkman's Guitar and keys work make for some interesting textures to their songs. Albums that are 50 years old 1. Miles Davis - Agharta 2. The Dictators - Go Girl Crazy! 3. Larry Coryell and 11th House - Level One 4. Elf - Trying To Burn The Sun 5. Jim Hall - Concierto 6. Grateful Dead - Blues for Allah 7. Rahsaan Roland Kirk - The Case of the 3 Sided Dream in Audio Color 8. Waylon Jennings - Dreaming My Dreams 9. Clifton Chenier - Bogalusa Boogie 10. The Meters - Fire On The Bayou 11. Average White Band - Cut the Cake 12. Merle Haggard - Keep Movin' On 13. Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow 14. ZZ Top - Fandango! 15. Outlaws - S/T 16. Barefoot Jerry - You Can't Get Off with Your Shoes On 17. Ted Nugent - S/T 18. Man - Maximum Darkness 19. Magma - Magma Live Spirit - 20. Son of Spirit 21. Edgar Winter - Jasmine Nightdreams 22. Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks 23. Jefferson Starship - Red Octopus 24. Black Oak Arkansas - Ain’t Life Grand 25. Back Street Crawler - The Band Plays On 26. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Nuthin' Fancy 27. Hawkwind - Warrior on the Edge of Time 28. Caravan - Cunning Stunts 29. Dr. Feelgood - Malpractice 30. Curved Air - Live
Caravan - Cunning Stunts, their 6th studio album, and the first with bass guitarist/ vocalist Mike Wedgwood. It's not their best album by any means, but still has some great highlights, the majestic opener The Show of Our Lives and Pye Hastings' whimsical No Backstage Pass amongst them. But the obvious highlight is the brilliant 18 minute epic The Dabsong Conshirtoe.
My penultimate pick goes to Supertramp, with 'Crisis? What Crisis?' Scarcely a weak track on this album - in my opinion! 1. Ambrosia - Ambrosia 2. Barclay James Harvest - Time Honoured Ghosts 3. Be-Bop Deluxe - Futurama 4. Camel - The Snow Goose 5. Caravan - Cunning Stunts 6. Clannad - Clannad 2 7. The Doobie Brothers - Stampede 8. Eagles - One of These Nights 9. Electric Light Orchestra - Face the Music 10. Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac 11. Focus - Mother Focus 12. Gryphon - Raindance 13. Justin Hayward and John Lodge - Blue Jays 14. Al Stewart - Modern Times 29. Styx - Equinox 30. Supertramp - Crisis? What Crisis?
My pick for today is Burning Spear - Marcus Garvey. Named after the political activist who had a huge impact on the rastafari culture. This album contains spiritual songs that deal with oppression and injustice. It´s a fine reggae classic bursting with highlights. To name a few: ´The Title Track´ ´Slavery Days´ ´Old Marcus Garvey´ ´Jordan River´ and ´Tradition´. My knowledge of Reggae is quite limited, I need to delve more into this genre.
Great pick! If you like reading about music, Lloyd Bradley’s Bass Culture is a great intro into the vast history. Burning Spear was one of my picks, along with these: Max Romeo & the Upsetters - Revelation Time The Mystic Revelation Of Rastafari - Tales Of Mozambique Jacob Miller - Who Say Jah No Dread 1976 would be the peak year for reggae!
Day 30: Keith Jarrett - The Koln Concert Day 29: Rush - Caress Of Steel Day 28: Kraftwerk - Radio-Activity Day 27: Richie Blackmore's Rainbow Day 26: The New Tony Williams Lifetime - Believe It Day 25: Thin Lizzy - Fighting Day 24: Deep Purple - Come Taste The Band Day 23: Alice Cooper - Welcome To My Nightmare Day 22: Black Sabbath - Sabotage Day 21: Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti Day 20: Roxy Music - Siren Day 19: Vangelis - Heaven And Hell Day 18: Focus - Mother Focus Day 17: Tangerine Dream - Rubycon Day 16: Mike Oldfield - Ommadawn Day 15: Stanley Clarke - Journey To Love Day 14: Heart - Dreamboat Annie Day 13: Rick Wakeman - The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table Day 12: The Brecker Bros Day 11: Billy Cobham - Shabazz Day 10: Chris Squire - Fish Out Of Water Day 9: Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here Day 8: Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow Day 7: Weather Report - Tale Spinnin' Day 6: Soft Machine - Bundles Day 5: Steve Hackett - Voyage Of The Acolyte Day 4: King Crimson - USA Day 3: Return To Forever - No Mystery Day 2: Mahavishnu Orchestra - Visions Of The Emerald Beyond Day 1: Rush - Fly By Night

Day 30 - #2. Anyone who looks at my rankings, and who I tend to tout, will not be surprised that the forthcoming names were lurking. I am talking about Justin Hayward and John Lodge and their BLUE JAYS project. The Moody Blues went on a hiatus in March of 74, igniting several solo projects from the band members, of which included Ray Thomas FROM MIGHTY OAKS which cracked this list on day #1. BLUE JAYS was to include Mike Pinder, but he opted out. With the great Tony Clarke - the sixth Moody - brought in to produce, the record had a DAYS feel to it. Standout tracks: THIS MORNING; YOU; SAVED BY THE MUSIC; I DREAMED LAST NIGHT, and WHEN YOU WAKE UP. Later in the year the song BLUE GUITAR after release of the album was included. THIS MORNING and I DREAMED LAST NIGHT were FM radio plays. THIS MORNING and BLUE GUITAR feature the guitar tone of Hayward that has set him on my MT RUSHMORE of guitarists, and made him my first guitar hero...Absolutely gorgeous stuff! 3. Joni Mitchell: The Hissing of Summer Lawns 4. Gordon Lightfoot - Cold on the Shoulder 5. Jeff Beck - Blow by Blow 6. Chris Squire - Fish Out of Water 7. Al Stewart - Modern Times 8. Chicago - VIII 9. Jean Luc Ponty - Upon the Wings of Music 10. Emmylou Harris - Elite Hotel 11. Emmylou Harris - Pieces of the Sky 12. Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti 13. War - Can’t We Be Friends 14. Elton John - Captain Fantastic 15. Mac - White Album 16. Stanley Clarke - Journey to Love 17. Herbie Hancock - Man Child 18. UFO-Force It 19. Tull - Minstrel 20. Roxy - Siren 21. Grover Washington Jr. - Mister Magic 22.Frampton - Self-titled 23. Bowie - Young Americans 24. Focus - Mother Focus 25. Steeleye Span - All Around My Hat 26. Doobie Brothers - Stampede 27. EJ -Westies 28. Allman Brothers - Win, Lose, or Draw 29. Oldfield-Ommadawn 30. Trower - For Earth Below 31. Ray Thomas - From Mighty Oaks
"Way of the Acolyte" was released by Steve Hackett (while still a member of Genesis) on the Chrysalis Records label in October '75. Based quite loosely on the Tarot, the opener, "Ace of Wands" is powerful rocker with Steve's guitars and Rutherford's bass backed by Phil Collins's drums with others filling out the sound that does indeed sound like Genesis at times. A standout track that I cannot communicate with words how utterly beautiful it truly is - "Hands of the Priestess II" is the penultimate song on side one. This prog-rock album, Hackett's first studio LP, reached #26 U.K., but only 191 in the U.S. Tarot was not so ubiquitous in America yet.

30) Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run
There was no album released in 1975 that I anticipated with so much excitement as I did Born To Run.

Great pick a magical album. 👍
Hi Christopher! Yes! Awesome article! My pick today too! 😃👍. - Heather
Hi Chris. Awesome pick and article.
hey christopher great pick, i picked it earlier

2: RUSH- Fly By Night
I started with the debut album in '79.
Fine album, Ziggy
Great choice Ziggy!
great Album
Nice pick Ziggy!
Ah yes, we gotta get that second Rush album in there.
#2 Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
All month long this has been sitting as my #1.

My number 2:
Kansas, Song for America
Well, it had to be Kansas right?

Awesome pick Jerry! Paul Rodgers is such a great singer!

This masterpiece should be my favorite album of 1975 but…
It has powerful hard rock ("Custard Pie", "The Rover", "The Wanton Song", "Sick Again" and "Houses of the Holy"), funk ("Trampled Under Foot"), acoustic songs ("Down by the Seaside"), blues reinvented (In My Time of Dying").
songs that were left out of previous albums and new compositions. It's an album that I never tire of listening to. 1975. Lep Zep was at the heights like never before and never since.

Great history lesson for the UK connection! HR. The album launched them!

Today I'm going with Force It by UFO.
The second last day of January, and time to decide which of my two favourite albums would make it to the top… it has been not an easy decision. Anyway, my pick today goes to
My personal albums from 1975, in alphabetical order:

- Heather

Great write-up. Thanks!

An album chock full of awesome songs and there is 0 filler to be had on this great record. Some standout tracks for me are The Rover In My Time of Dyin Ten Years Gone and Kashmir but the whole album is all killer

My Day 30 Pick (and my genuine #2/Runner-Up):
Alice Cooper - Welcome to My Nightmare
Mr.

Horses
Honorable Mentions:
KISS ... Alive!
Berserkley Chartbusters Vol 1 (Various Artists)
Mahavishnu Orchestra ... Visions of the Emerald Beyond
Why don't people talk about Patti Smith's Horses album as a first American punk album? Her past association with Blue Oyster Cult as a lyricist disqualifies her?
The Berserkley Record label collect their first singles by Jonathan Richman, Earth Quake, and others for an early album.

@@keithjones6023 Good choice, Keith. You’re clearly not alone in ranking this album so highly.
I like Someone Saved My Life Tonight.

@@Starman2112ofKings Great choice, Starman. That’s one of 15 picks that have also made my list. There might have been more if I didn’t limit myself to one album per artist.

@@theomoor8513LOL Danke, Theo! This is the best Yes album not by Yes.
31. Scorpions - In Trance

@@erorufurakku6378 Same choice today excellent pick.
Great CD! Was lucky to see RTF's tour of this No Mystery album back in 1975. Great and Memorable show!
Day 30 Kansas-Song For America.
Day 30 Curved Air - Live One of the great unsung prog bands of the 70's shows that they were a dynamic live act. Darryl Way's violin and electronics, along with Francis Monkman's Guitar and keys work make for some interesting textures to their songs.
Albums that are 50 years old
1. Miles Davis - Agharta
2. The Dictators - Go Girl Crazy!
3. Larry Coryell and 11th House - Level One
4. Elf - Trying To Burn The Sun

26. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Nuthin' Fancy
27. Hawkwind - Warrior on the Edge of Time
28. Caravan - Cunning Stunts
29. Dr. Feelgood - Malpractice
I think it's a highly under-rated Caravan album - but maybe that's because it's actually the first one I heard! Great choice.
My penultimate pick goes to Supertramp, with 'Crisis? What Crisis?' Scarcely a weak track on this album - in my opinion!
1. Ambrosia - Ambrosia
2. Barclay James Harvest - Time Honoured Ghosts

25. Rush - Fly by Night / Caress of Steel
26. Bob Seger - Beautiful Loser
27. Steely Dan - Katy Lied
28. Al Stewart - Modern Times
29. Styx - Equinox
Burning Spear was one of my picks, along with these:
Max Romeo & the Upsetters - Revelation Time
The Mystic Revelation Of Rastafari - Tales Of Mozambique
Jacob Miller - Who Say Jah No Dread
1976 would be the peak year for reggae!
@Fastnbulbous1969 Thanks for the info, I will definitely use it.
Super pick Danny. Tosh and Marley are my only reggae dudes. My son is a Rastafarian now
@ziggyzagzi8017 Thanks Ziggy. I love this album a lot, I need to investigate more into reggae and also dub. I think your son is cool.

Great pick, David.
3. Joni Mitchell: The Hissing of Summer Lawns
4. Gordon Lightfoot - Cold on the Shoulder

Excellent choice, Daniel.
@weirddebbiem1619 Thank you Weirddebbiem.👍
OH YEAH PETE !!! GOOD ONE..
Another underrated band love Return To Forever my pick f o today is Elton John Rock Of The Westies favorite sone island girl
My secone favourite album of 1975: Nazareth - Hair Of The Dog
