They definitely seem to know. Every time I ask my IR something like "You my handsome boy?" he replies "mhuh" Idk if he simply knows when it's a question looking for a reply by an upward inflexion in that scenario. When he was a baby; he saw snow falling, ran along his perch & said "WOW!" (not a word I'd taught) & when I pointed at a magpie he saw it, turned to me & said "Oh, good boy!" 😍
@@bari2883 They’re so smart! Domesticated birds that are well taken care of love their cages. They have their loved ones around, and the cages are their little homes.
From what I have heard, the reason why they are illegal is because a lot of people used to buy these birds before contemplating what big of a responsibility you gotta have to take care of them. As a result, a whole lot of them get released out there, which is bad because they only thrive in tropical environments. New Jersey has all the seasons all year round, so it can be really bad for the birds. So I'm guessing that's why. I actually have one of these birds myself. Me and my family live in New York, so we believe that he may have been from Jersey. It was in the middle of February and the poor thing was freezing! The neighbors found him and decided not to keep him. We've been taking care of him ever since. It's a shame they're illegal because they make great pets. But at the same time I understand. I love Coty, and it breaks my heart remembering my little feather ball freezing like that...

Indian ringnecks are one of the most adorable, loving & talkative birds. It's so nice when you can actually understand what your bird is saying to you. 💙🙏🏻💜
The Birb Mama and Papa are already so happy and cute It adds a whole new dynamic to the adorableness of their little baby I CAN'T TAKE THIS AMOUNT OF WHOLESOME BIRBNESS, FAAAAM
people love my cockatoo and sometimes talk about wanting one. I always say NO ! its a toddler for life and few can make that kind of commitment. I keep telling them to try an Indian Ringneck. They seem to have sweet personalities and not so much work I hope someone gets one . would love to see that
elizabeth barrett Agree on the toddler comment. I saw a meme that said owning a bird is like having a bipolar toddler. I think it's pretty accurate. Cockatoos are lovey dovey (I have an umbrella) but they are very vocal and with those huge beaks they destroy anything they can get their beaks on. Actually almost every bird gets vocal and temperamental and they need lots of attention. But a fluffy bird who is getting his head scratched is THE greatest stress reliever for me.
Large cockatoos are indeed the most needy, hyper, ears-destroying and agressive when jealous parrot there are. Their bite also does alot of damage and they do bite. The cost of monthly toys, food, vet visits, etc, will rise quickly. They are all nice and cuddly untill puberty, then most turn into feathered devils and end-up alone in a basement or a bird shelter after the owner or a visitor got bit or terrorized by the INSANELY LOUD SCREAMING one time too many. Unexperienced people looking for a parrot should look into cockatiels ( possibly the least noisy, most easy to tame, bite less, less damage on bite ), lovebirds, conures ( watch out, some like the Sun conure scream insanely loud given their size ), galah, indian ringnecks (as in this video, they are a bit loud and can bite deep), Baraband's parrot ( the females are less social ), Senegal parrot, Hahn's macaw, etc. ( Quaker parrots are forbidden in many places as they easily become an invasive species. ) If you plan to get some experience before switching to larger parrots, adopt an older small parrot. When ready for a large parrot years later, after your first one dies, still avoid large cockatoos. Amazons, african greys, large macaws, eclectus parrots, etc, are worlds apart from large cockatoos in how easier they are to care for. ( I stress easiER, not easy. ) Frankly, untill selective breeding yields alot more tame, even-tempered and less loud adult large cockatoos, they will be unfit as pets for all but the most experienced and dedicated parrot enthousiasts. There are dozens of better-suited other large parrots to choose from. If people learned more about the parrot they plan to get before, they would know what to expect and be less likely to make mistakes and give-up. For the exceptional person still willing to get a large cockatoo : great! birds shelters are full of them! Contact one.
Just research, think about your lifestyle, bird needs, etc and then decide. Too many just buy one and then understand. I think that is true of almost any animal we want as a pet.
One thing I’ve always adored about birds, and parrots in particular, is the phenomenon of their pupils “pinning” when excited or interested in something. It’s just the cutest thing and it seems to be unique to birds.
Mammal pupils dilate when they are intrigued or interested in something. My dog's eyes dilate so much she looks drugged when I'm holding the ball about to throw it halfway through a fetch session. My cats' eyes are the same when they see movement and think it is prey. I guess in birds it is similar except their pupils and irises are more noticeable and the pupils dilate and constrict several times in a row in rapid succession. In birds it has become a feature they communicate with whereas in mammals it's just to let more light into the eye so they can better see what interests them.
@@giftofthewild6665 I honestly completely forgot about pupil dilation in mammals when they’re fascinated/excited. And I’m a major cat person! It is interesting to see the same phenomenon in reverse for birds. Wonder why that is?
