this was great! thank you I once had a player use Minor Illusion "you create an image of an object--such as a chair, muddy footprints, or a small chest--it must be no larger than a 5-foot cube. " She ran around a corner and cast it on her location to create a giant 4 foot thorny bush centered on her. They enemies completely passed her by. I was impressed. Another time she used it to create a fake 5 foot wall in a corridor-> AGAIN having enemies loose track of her.
I just spoke to my DM about creating an ice block to drop on an enemy. He researched it and found out that a 5x5 cube of of ice packed densely is = to 3.5 TONS. He said you could use 2 turns to move the block of water over and up to have it floating there then freeze it to make it drop on an enemy causing it to become a deadly trap 13dex saving roll and 4d10 dmg.
I'm curious how he did the math. Everytime I calculate it I get 5 cubed is 125 converted to gallons is 37.403 which makes roughly 312 lbs. Am I doing the math wrong?
You can still use frostwalker to cross a body of water you just have to also shape and move the water underneath the ice you're standing on to keep it lifted and balanced. Like the raft.
Too be fair a 5ft cube of water is gonna weigh a couple hundred pounds so it’d take a lot of weight to throw it off balance. I imagine one thing you could do is create a cone shaped ice block that is more stable
My favorite thing I did with water was, we were sneaking into an orc base. One of the guards was a sleep with a pale of water next to her. I used shape water to create a bubble of water around her head and drowned her.
A friend of mine sneaked into a party full of corrupt nobles, and when they gave a toast he used shape water to have a thin ice spike shoot through the back of the head from the wine glasses. Range is 30ft, and you can control 5ftx5ft cube worth of water you can see. Se he killed almost twenty people who failed the save that were not facing away from him. lol
This is one of your videos where I think: why didn't I do that?! You've done great work on promoting the clever use of cantrips in the past, and this video continues that tradition. It's so good for players and GM's to be able to think outside the descriptions in the book and go to real world applications: I loved breaking the lock with ice! Then the section where you go over various questions that players might have when trying to use the cantrip. Well done Fred!
Pull water from the moisture in the air or even out of the plants? Perhaps create a shield out of ice. And because it is a cantrip and the blocks of ice are frozen for 1 hour you could perhaps build a small shelter from multiple pieces that "remain frozen for 1 hour" then slowly begin to melt depending on where you are at in the world. Cheap air conditioning for a bit in a hot place. Great video. The freeze the lock seams so obvious when you think about it for half a second but otherwise is easy to over look.
-Freeze a person's mouth shut when they take a drink of water, freezing the waterskin to their mouth. Or perhaps freeze their saliva when they open their mouth to speak. -Freeze the water covering someone's eyeballs to freeze their eyes open. -Shape, then freeze some water into long spikes that are aimed at pursuers or someone you want to interrogate. -Shape, then freeze some water into a huge skull as intimidation. -Piss in beautiful patterns. -Block a 5 foot wide passageway with a block of pitch black ice to stop/hinder people that follow you. EditL OH I FORGOT MY FAVORITE! Freeze some water at the end of your arrow, aim it at a torch and shoot. Then dismiss the spell right before it hits the torch, allowing you to take out torches from afar. Garrett the Thief says hi!
You may not be able to freeze someone's eyes, but you can adjust the opacity of water, and since eyes are mostly water, you can make their eyes opaque and effectively blind them.
I once used it to create a slide to get us off the top floor of a 5 story building while being chased by killer ghost animals and their master lol worked out amazingly
DM use: your shop keeper, you know the one who sells magic items, keeps all his items frozen on the shelf in a solid block of crystal clear ice. 5x5x10 feet of ice weighs several tons, and water has a very high thermal capacity, melting the ice is no easy task.
I had a BLAST on your world building/domain building video round table on AJ's channel. Wrote about 4 pages in 4 hours, detailing the Aranea & their allies & foes. I had to leave for an hour, so it ended up being 2 comments. I'd really like to have your feedback on my Magicalgascar races along with their interactions. Twas really merely an exercise for me. Since my local (45 minutes away) gaming store closed 2 years ago. However, it was exciting to be able to "create" rather than just write adventures. I didn't bother too much with Flumph (except that their farts were Laughing Gas for Trog's, keeping in the theme of narcyfruits & narcotic roots). Always felt that laughing gas is under represented in drug lore. Didn't bother at all with the mushroom people, anyone, DM or reader, can do their own mind games with mushrooms. Did this channel used to be hosted by a young boy? I liked him, learning 1st ed. I learned on 1st ed. when I was 8. "Machtig the Hobbit" with a great sword, a long sword, a dozen daggers, a bow, numerous 18 stat scores when my brother wasn't watching me roll. I probably had one or more of every weapon, wearing 3 different kinds of armor (gambeson under plate with a large shield), 6 weeks of iron rations...all the fun! Taught me math it did. Wow, sometimes it's hard to believe that was 43 years ago. Cherish is the new love, Be Well.
Most of these work really well with the four elements monk’s “shape of the flowing river” ability. Although that’s a niche feature in an unpopular subclass.
comment: If you cast this spell multiple times, you can have no more than two of its non-instantaneous effects active at a time... That said that would be a larger area and making it stable.... ref: 5:15 in the video
given time, you should be able to completely compromise a structure by repeatedly pushing water into a crack and freezing it to expand the crack. this is what happens to roads where i live. :D
So... Can you use shape water to animate thin layer of water to circle fast enough for it to act as a circular saw? You cannot move it to cause damage, but what about animaing it inside 5 ft cube?
I did a live stream video on the topic of Shape Water. This is an edited video on Shape Water based on the live stream with less detail and a shorter run time. Someone people don't see the benefits of longer video formats and prefer a quick overview.
Reckon you can't freeze a water elemental of any size because the spell says you can't freeze water if there are creatures in it, and the water in an elemental is entirely creature? Great video.
I was thinking about using this spell with the spell with the create water spell to create water in a creature's mouth and then use shape water to freeze now they're suffocating for 1 hour
Yo hear me out minor illusion is an instantaneous cast with no concentration and lasts up to 1 minute ie one whole battle. So let's say you're a rogue who's gained access to shape water and you just have it up all the time swirling water balls around you. This is because shape water has no concentration and also your conjunction affects the chosen water for a whole hour and since is a cantrip you can just spam it when it runs out. Now your character is just out and about when all of a sudden the party enters a combat. Well the first thing they do is cast Minor illusion over their water/ or optionally ice of you're going with a knock off chill touch but wet or cold it'd be pretty spooky if you felt something gross touching your shoulder. I could see this used for getting sneak attacks pulling Naruto shadow clones or intimidating your enemy with an illusory ally. Let me know what you guys think
Also so long as you just state that you keep recasting it idk why you wouldn't be allowed to just swirl it around until you need it. That or just keep it in a jug.
Great video Fred!
Thank you Scott.
Freezing doors shut behind you as you run away is an underrated use case

very interesting! My ranger used the combination of water shape and gust (a little tickled/homebrew) to wash her wolf, animal companion
