  • If you bought a computer or a phone in the last 5 years, you know what a dongle is. Apple, Belkin and other accessory companies have created a huge market for these dongles, which is estimated by Facts and Factors to bring in more than $25 billion by 2027. But with wireless tech constantly on the heals of adapters like these, companies that once made most of their money on dongles are investing in the future of device connections.

I bought a dell xps 15 back in 2018 and I realized how much they sacrificed for it to be thinner. If I was worried about size I would've gone for a 13 inch or smaller laptop. The biggest problem is overheating. When they make them really thin, the cooling system sucks and it'll get hot doing anything. So I learned how to build a pc and Ive never been more happy just having a good pc and only use my laptop when I'm not home but anything intensive I save for my desktop.

I also have the m1 macbook air and I will say I've made my setup work pretty well. I have a dongle, but I dont always use it. My mouse is bluetooth and the two ports are used for charging and my 4k external display. Then my speakers are plugged into the headphone jack. I really only have to use the dongle if I want to transfer files from an SD card to my external hdd which doesn't happen very often. Overall, I like having the versatility and thin laptop.

    • @plentyofpaper
      @plentyofpaper 3 года назад

@@MisterFakeGinger It's possible to have a setup that does not frequently require a dongle. And honestly, this isn't even too bad if you're coming into the world of computers from a fresh start, although you're probably going to need to get more expensive stuff if you only get products that are USB-C compatible. I didn't even know there were USB-C monitors (but I'm glad to see they're becoming a thing.)
Without a dongle, I cannot use any of my monitors, any of my mice, any of my flash drives, my SD cards, printers, scanners, or any of my external hard drives. I can't use the vast majority of my video game controllers, or even the adapters that would allow me to use them. Heck, I couldn't even charge my iPhone without buying a new cable, but ironically, my new Android phone uses USB-C, and is one of the few devices I can connect directly. I could connect any of these things to my previous, low-end laptop without issue, and add internal components as well.
As an existing computer user purchasing a Macbook Air, I've got a choice to either fork over a bit of extra cash for a dumb looking dongle and keep it on hand most of the time, or buy all new hardware to replace all of these things. The dongle is the obvious choice, but it basically means the computer is $30 more expensive than the advertised price, and I've got an extra doodad to hang on to.
Also, you mentioned you like having the versatility, but that's precisely what modern Macbooks are missing. If you like it thin, great. I'm legitimately glad you like it. But from my perspective, I can't think of a single instance where the size difference between my previous 15" HP Pavillion and my 13" Macbook Air has worked out in the Macbook's favor. If anything, the larger screen was a benefit.

Apple does not make a lot of money selling dongles. That's mostly left to third parties like Belkin. Apple would prefer if the industry got with the program and started shipping USB-C cables. In many cases, it's literally just changing the cable the device uses. When the connector is built in, you just have to change the terminator on the cable. The electrical signals on USB-C are backwards compatible with USB-A. So this is really just inertia preventing us from moving to a dongle-less future.

Because the iPhone uses a proprietary port? All the other products use USB-C so it doesn't make much sense to make a blanket statement like that when most of their other products use standardized ports. Being able to use a USB-C to USB-C cable for everything is amazing. Everything I own uses USB-C except for my iPhone unfortunately. However, the only dongle I have is a USB-C to SD card reader for my desktop PC.

Hot take: Dongle's are a good thing on laptops.
Before dongles there was computer docks. They provided all the same functionality a dongle does. You go into work, plug your computer in and your mouse, keyboard, internet, and monitor are all synced up with one plug. However, docks are model specific so when you get a new computer you have to get a new dock. Docks were expensive too. You can buy one dongle and continue using it from computer to computer for decades, and dongles are way cheaper.
The average macbook pro user uses their computer for work, not for games or netflix or whatever. Being able to take their laptop in to work every morning and plug it in with one click instead of a bunch of cables is quite nice. Before dongles companies would often refuse to pay for docks due to the price point so you had to pay for it out of pocket. Today the company will pay for the dongles you need for you and it just makes life so much easier.

Being in the hardware design world. It is incredibly hard to design an interface which runs at 10Gb/s or greater, something like thunderbolt. Currently it can take a whole weekend to test a chip design, when i say the design I mean the Verilog/VHDL code which defines the chip. Now as a designer, I say why make two->N different chips (HDMI 2.0 , Ethernet are going to these speeds), when i can just make one and make it really good. Sure you will have to buy adaptors, but that is the problem in the short term. USB-C looks like it will be here for the coming future and if everything goes USB-C as the receptacle this will not be a problem, just keep you adaptors. System designers don't want to change everything at once, they prefer to make changes in increments. We are currently going through the change from numerous different receptacles, to only one receptacle. To me this change is a good change. On the topic of wireless, this will never replace a wired connection. This is one of the first things you tell people who are working from home, connect the Ethernet cable. You may have "good" signal, but all the data maybe corrupted, due to interferences. You can only tell if the data is corrupted when programmes start checking the data.

To summarize I still hate the fact that I forced to use dongle, yet I see value of them.

Dongles are cool if you own a cellphone and connect it to a tv. A dongle allows you to charge your phone and use a mouse and keyboard.

The reverse is also true... As you upgrade your laptop, your dongle or dock can stay the same for years into the future

u do know u can get a type C - mini usb kable. As long as its USB, u dont need to dongle, just a straigh cable with 2 different connectors, those are like 1 or 2 USD for short ones, its more difficult to cable analog devices

Laptops used to come with an expansion card slot to allow additional ports and features like adding usb ports or WiFi etc to a laptop. We didn't need to have dongles hanging off the side of the laptop.

And of course belkin is going to be in favor of fewer ports... they make money during the transition period so the more changes, updates and transitions we go through the more money they make!
