He's not snarky enough. If there's one thing I remember about Dimitri, he's got sarcasm and "con-man charm" for days, even if I didn't know it was sarcasm when I binge watched Anastasia as a kid.

though Anastasia was a Granddutchess because of russian translation of king,queen,prince,princess etc. so when you filter it back to english it was just better to say grandduchess (which is why we have russian titles like tzar, tzarina which mean king and queen but also have granddukes and duchesses) so basically anastasia is a princess so if she were to claim the crown (which: spoiler alert she doesn't) he would technically be a prince.
