So now I'm going to sound like a fan boy. All I wanted originally was a basic amplifier (at the time a fancy term) to make audio...well...louder! That was all... didn't ask to be launched on an epic learning curve analogous to "The Hero's Journey". So it turns out that first question, "Can something make this louder?", was a 'call to adventure'. That was months ago! Tempted by interesting sounding and fancy looking gadgets called USB-DACs I followed the breadcrumbs and found myself neck deep with not much to grasp on to until I found Z Reviews, like a mythic Helper who shows up at the right time (i.e. neck deep and not a moment sooner) with supernatural aid. The USB-DAC comparison video is probably still the most helpful comparison review you can find. However at first I still tried to do my own thing. Got a Sony DAC. After only a month or so it stopped working at which point I realised how much these gadgets I knew nothing about a few months ago have come to mean to me. So I did what I should have done in the first place and got the Oppo (aka "my precious"). I got a pair of MDR-1As along with the initial Sony purchase thanks to Z. But perhaps most valuable of all, I started using Foobar. So now I've got the basics I need to carry on learning and listening. Thanks Zeos! You've made me a totally anti-social audiophile for a few months and I've loved it!
Lol I got into this in a similar way. I just wanted a pair of decent headphones because before that I had fucking beats (and they were the old beats from before apple bought the company that were way worse than they are now). I watched a bunch of reviews of headphones and ended up buying hd598’s, and I was happy. But then I found zeos, and his personality made me want to keep watching, and I started learning more and getting way more interested in audio, and now I have 4 pairs of headphones (maybe soon to be 5) and of course, I use foobar with a modified version of zeos’s configuration.
You say people are obsessive with the album art, you're exactly that with the background. Can't blame you, or them. We like to see images, paired with music.
I tried the Wasabi add-on and some other configuration I found on the internet and I was mind blown with the results. My hd650 came to life literally. I was living on a crazy lie for years. I don't know how I could believe I was living the audiophile life without this setup.
@@snowycc no problem! I remember watching an intro to Windows 7 video years ago and that was a new feature. It's been in every version since and I've never seen anyone mention it!

And also fuck yes for re:zero. Fuck. Yes. Also tightening chair-to-stand screws helped my squeaking and it's just my hunch that you might not have done that for a while.
Actually, random is more random than shuffle tracks. Random can randomly play the same track again (or several times), or randomly play some tracks in order. It's like rolling dice. Shuffle simply shuffles the songs without any random repeats, or random normal order of sequence.

Hey Z, I hope you see this message, you have to try to power your DAC and amp through a pure sine wave power inverter, connected to a 12v battery (car battery). It is revolutionary on sound quality improvement... I think to myself the only reason its not commercial is because its not consider so safe to charge a car battery in the hause, i have done for a long time, and i know your experimental enough to try new things, but i promise you, i will only say i told you so. TRY!! it.
Just a quick FYI: fb2k-component files are actually ZIP archives. So basically you rename any downloaded foobar component from .zip to .fb2k-component, and have an easy installation. Also, I still don't get it why people insist on using WASAPI. Its only practical purpose is to gain exclusive access to a device so that no other program can play audio on said device. However, I fail to see how this is useful in everyday use. In some rare and specific situations sure but in general? It just seems like a hassle with no real benefit to anything.
In older operating systems your music would be run through the windows mixer and it did degrade the output since it was altered from the true waveform. Now modern OS do an OK job but really if you are ready to listen to music on a huge system off of your PC do you really want a random DING or web ad or Chat alert slamming across the best part of Freebird?
The Windows mixer isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be, especially on Vista and above. Granted, Vista and 7 did have the bug with lower quality resampling but that was patched with an update. As far as I am aware, the Windows mixer in Vista and above handles everything (volume, mixing, resampling, etc.) in 32-bit floating point. foobar2000 does everything internally also in 32-bit floating point. So, foobar2000 is actually handing a native signal to Windows' mixer which would then convert it to 24- or 16-bit as per the settings in the audio panel. However, this conversion is more than good enough to be completely transparent to any human being on the planet and even, if I'm not mistaken, (virtually) all audio equipment. If WASAPI is indeed used to prevent any accidental "dings", then I can accept that. :) Although I am a proponent of simply setting up all programs and disable any sound effects they play. I was just a bit worried that it might be because of some desire for "bit-perfect output" or "superior sound quality", which is utter nonsense.
Yep, people are still worried about the effects of software volume on bit depth, but with modern OS versions that's not a problem anymore. At worst it could be that a specific low-grade player app or web player has a badly implemented volume control, but that's not an issue with foobar.
Indeed. It's not an issue with any of the more popular players like Winamp, foobar2000, AIMP, JRiver, XMPlay, etc. I believe we are at a point when the biggest damage to music is being done by improper/incompetent mixing and mastering, a.k.a. the loudness war. Hardware has evolved enough so that, as long as it is decently designed, even inexpensive devices can sound just as good as expensive ones. Software/players are good enough so they are not even close to being bottlenecks for quality, and lossy codecs/formats are also perfectly capable of achieving transparency, even at low-to-medium bitrates. And this is not even mentioning lossless, for those who want to be completely certain they have the best file source.
AliveNoMore "lossy codecs/formats are also perfectly capable of achieving transparency, even at low-to-medium bitrates" Yyyeeaaah, I'd take issue with that. 128 kbps CBR MP3 is low-to-medium and it's laughably un-transparent. You really have to push MP3 bitrates all the way up to get real transparency. Maybe with AAC you could get away with using less than the maximum and still have most people unable to distinguish it from a FLAC, but MP3 is not quite that good, and that matters because it's still the most widespread format. You're really compromising on quality if you go below 192 VBR or 256 CBR with MP3s.
Would have been great if we could change tracks, pause or play from that little taskbar pop up, when you put cursor on the taskbar icon, like WMP...Now you have to click on it, get the whole player window back up on desktop to do that.
I have my foobar decked out tenfold compared to Z, I have hot keys for everything, even the crap I don't need hot keys for. So I can press a hot key to play or pause, play he next song or previous one, play a random song from the the current playlist or change what play order I'm in (random, linear or repeat track.). I can change my volume in increments of 3dB from -21 to -0dB and can change my audio output device for my sound card, audio interface, VAC, ASIO driver outs and modes like DS wave pull and push, KS, etc. foobar is pretty damn cool, I also have every installable component as well, so I have tons of functions, like sorting every song from a specific band from most to least popular through last.fm, or a lyrics panel which automatically gets lyrics from many sources and highlights and follows the current lyrics according to what point of the song you are at.
So with all these anime pics and stuff all over your reviews does that mean that you are Japanese perhaps or part ? or is it a childhood cartoon thing just wondering . Foobar has many Pro Setup features also good review of your preferences .
Okay, so I have Foobar2000 and a 5.1 setup (Edifier S760D). And I would like to set it so that when foobar is playing, it is playing in (double?) stereo and any other program in surround. I already tried setting the playback output (wasapi event and push) to a different setting which works for Foobar but it stops the rest of my audio (only foobar gives sound). Can anyone tell me how to achieve this?
I created a custom column called 'Sample Rate' = $if($stricmp(%codec%,DSD64), $insert($div(%samplerate%, 100),.,1), $left($div(%samplerate%, 100), $sub($len($div(%samplerate%, 100)),1)).$right($div(%samplerate%, 100), 1)) $if($stricmp(%codec%,DSD64),MHz,kHz) It's not really sortable but it's good to visually see resolution.
Excellent Video. Redid my foobar. One question though. Is it possible to control foobar from my mobile? Is it a good idea to get a chromecast for music listening?
I just separate bands in their own folder and then usually no sub folders. Just keep everything labled filename ARTIST - TRACK TITLE.flac Then keep the tags proper for album and track number.
open foobar then go to Library > Configure > Playback > Output then select one of the "DS" option for your preferred output device, and NOT any "WASAPI" options Z says it in the video
I've been using WACUP for the longest time. I like WACUP for some things but there's also foobar 2000 that I like for other reasons. They're both great audio players. I'm just not sure what one I want. 😭 WACUP just works well out of the box. But foobar takes a while to setup. Foobar is like the arch linux of music players while WACUP is like the windows of music players. foobar can play cue/bin files out the box which WACUP can't.
Thanks for this, i changed it to suit me. But Foobar2000 does sound better... not sure right word, maybe it sounds more more clear than what VLC was giving me.
Thanks a lot for the tutorials Z! It really helped me a lot, but what I don't get is I get question mark (?) on the all 3 replay gain columns, did i miss any plug in or component? Thanks again!
Can someone please help me? I did everything and it works fine. The i imported spotify. The program will play the songs, but waveform wont work. Any ideas?
Yes it does. I imported some flac files and it worked perfectly. But with Spotify (and i have premium) it doesn't. If i try a replaygain scan, it says "Object not found" if i try update tag it says "Could not update tags (Unsupported format or corrupted file) on: "spotify:user:gloatingcord:playlist:3opx8kJwMV74M2wOjJY1Wu" / index: 12" I used this to add spotify to foobar2000 cpancake.me/spotify-on-foobar2000.html "The easy way"
I unzipped and put the graphic EQ dll into the main foobar directory and restarted foobar. after reloading foobar, it never showed up in the available DSPs. :(
Hey Z can you show us how to use the crossover DSP. Specifically how to configure the outputs of your onboard analogue outputs from your soundcard. So you can use one of the three outputs for a sub out another with a certain high pass maybe for front L and R and then another for rear L and R if you want thanks in advance
I like to also use foobar to stream music to my Yamaha AVR from my home office P.C. & the play store app works great also. Can I hear more of those Elac's soon??
hey Zeos (or anyone who look at this video) idk if you already know this but newer windows 10 Update (April) they fix the transparency so now there's no white bar in the foobar
I put the replay gain info like you said but nothing shows up when I put music on it. I tried to fiddle around by scanning the songs to get it to show up but it wont work for me. I'm new to this sort of stuff so any info/help would be greatly appreciated!
Does anyone know why push works but event doesnt? Im running the smsl m2 dac. it seems to do fine as a direct source and a push on wasapi, but when i try wasapi event, it shows that its playing audio and doesnt actually play it... Also i cant here anything else if i close foobar.
you forgot to show how to add an image to the background of the app, or can you not do that and those images are just your desktop that's coming though since its transparent
there is no difference, both do the same thing. bit-perfect/unmodulated audio to the DAC by bypassing the windows internal audio rendering kernel engine/primary sound driver. wasapi is preconfigured, automatically detects the best streaming method asio is configurable, leaves you with manual control about latency and declipping of the audio DAC streaming method it entirely depends on how capable your dac is now, if you have a good dac which is capable, you can increase the latency and buffersize for lesser to no clipping but this only becomes in handy if you are using a digital audio workstation software and using lots of different sounds or superhigh bitrate music like DSD512
Oke I am going mad over these white bars though my foobar2000. I read here and there that people were able to fix it using "high contrast", but no matter how I set it up, it makes basically everything everywhere super ugly with boxes around everything. Any help on how to fix my foobar2000 would be MUCH appreciated!
Try flipping the space bar around. It may not be possible on those depending on how the space bar is mounted. But if you can it will hit your thumb in a much more natural way.

I just separate bands in their own folder and then usually no sub folders. Just keep everything labled filename ARTIST - TRACK TITLE.flac Then keep the tags proper for album and track number.
so no album files and if mp3 do .mp3? would rename work for this?
why does foobar break youtube when im watching a video and llistening to music at the same time? pls someone help
open foobar then go to Library > Configure > Playback > Output then select one of the "DS" option for your preferred output device, and NOT any "WASAPI" options
Z says it in the video

I've been using WACUP for the longest time. I like WACUP for some things but there's also foobar 2000 that I like for other reasons. They're both great audio players. I'm just not sure what one I want. 😭
WACUP just works well out of the box. But foobar takes a while to setup. Foobar is like the arch linux of music players while WACUP is like the windows of music players. foobar can play cue/bin files out the box which WACUP can't.
Do you know how to share screen or record screen... we can’t see lol...
i definitely was waiting for this!
Sorry this must be a stupid question but whats the difference between grove music player vs Foobar2000? i just play flacs and wavs
Thanks for this, i changed it to suit me. But Foobar2000 does sound better... not sure right word, maybe it sounds more more clear than what VLC was giving me.
Great video Z! Hey what's that mechanical keyboard you're using? It doesn't look like the Havit 366BL you reviewed a while back.
This desk has the Geezer GS3. Review soon
Which one do you prefer? Havit or Geezer?
why i cant double click to play songs from library???
Thanks a lot for the tutorials Z! It really helped me a lot, but what I don't get is I get question mark (?) on the all 3 replay gain columns, did i miss any plug in or component? Thanks again!
You have to scan the tracks. Select them all and right click and do scan as albums with tags. It will take a while but it will fill in all the data.
As yoda would say, "Awesome, it really is!" Now I know why Witcher 3 OST are one of the best sounding album...Thanks a lot man!
You should check out the facets plugin if you haven't already, way better than foobar's built in navigation system
Those ELAC Uni-Fi UB5's... WHEN?!
is there any codecs for this software .. i installed but sounds thiner than other players
When I scan for peaks and replay gain, the flac files go over 1.00... What am I doing wrong?
Uh oh, looks like a new bestest speaker since the JBL's are gone.
Can someone please help me? I did everything and it works fine. The i imported spotify. The program will play the songs, but waveform wont work. Any ideas?
does the waveform work with other local music?
Yes it does. I imported some flac files and it worked perfectly. But with Spotify (and i have premium) it doesn't. If i try a replaygain scan, it says "Object not found" if i try update tag it says "Could not update tags (Unsupported format or corrupted file) on:
"spotify:user:gloatingcord:playlist:3opx8kJwMV74M2wOjJY1Wu" / index: 12" I used this to add spotify to foobar2000 cpancake.me/spotify-on-foobar2000.html "The easy way"
I have the exact same problem as Panzertank (I used the same method as him). What method are you using to transfer your spotify music over?
I unzipped and put the graphic EQ dll into the main foobar directory and restarted foobar. after reloading foobar, it never showed up in the available DSPs. :(
where does everyone download their music from?
RUclips
lorem ipsum not very good quality though?
LOL
Hey Z can you show us how to use the crossover DSP. Specifically how to configure the outputs of your onboard analogue outputs from your soundcard. So you can use one of the three outputs for a sub out another with a certain high pass maybe for front L and R and then another for rear L and R if you want thanks in advance
My foobar causes a memory error to pop up whenever i run it after 30ish minutes, does anyone else have that issue on win10?
I like to also use foobar to stream music to my Yamaha AVR from my home office P.C. & the play store app works great also. Can I hear more of those Elac's soon??
I am just getting in to this type of stuff were should i music in flac format and such
hey Zeos (or anyone who look at this video) idk if you already know this but newer windows 10 Update (April) they fix the transparency so now there's no white bar in the foobar
there are still white bars in my foo bar
Can you elaborate a bit? I am trying to get rid of those stupid bars too!
I put the replay gain info like you said but nothing shows up when I put music on it. I tried to fiddle around by scanning the songs to get it to show up but it wont work for me. I'm new to this sort of stuff so any info/help would be greatly appreciated!
I'm on Windows 7 and I cant get the white bars to have the color of the rest of foobar2000. Any ideas why?
w10 same problem
What is the best way to get flac music?
buy cds, rip audio and sell them or keep them
pirate bay ?
Soulseek
Thanks a lot, bro. I was wondering if you still have Audeze iSINE10s/20s? If yes, do you eq them on Foobar or use Audeze's Reveal plugin?
Does anyone know why push works but event doesnt? Im running the smsl m2 dac. it seems to do fine as a direct source and a push on wasapi, but when i try wasapi event, it shows that its playing audio and doesnt actually play it... Also i cant here anything else if i close foobar.
where do people get music files
you forgot to show how to add an image to the background of the app, or can you not do that and those images are just your desktop that's coming though since its transparent
So you would rather use WASAPI than ASIO? I mean does one really sound better than the other?
wasapi is just less driver oriented. Ive had issues with ASIO on some things.
Z Reviews Oh okay. I thought there was like a sound difference.
there is no difference, both do the same thing. bit-perfect/unmodulated audio to the DAC by bypassing the windows internal audio rendering kernel engine/primary sound driver.
wasapi is preconfigured, automatically detects the best streaming method
asio is configurable, leaves you with manual control about latency and declipping of the audio DAC streaming method
it entirely depends on how capable your dac is now, if you have a good dac which is capable, you can increase the latency and buffersize for lesser to no clipping but this only becomes in handy if you are using a digital audio workstation software and using lots of different sounds or superhigh bitrate music like DSD512
Cuerex Awesome explanation. Thank you.
Cuerex Well I have a Modi 2 Uber...
How can we find your playlist dude? Every demo video you do about the speakers there is aways a bunch of songs...
Hi i wonder why my foobar cant play dsd file i used wasapi with dac support dsd
That's a very nice keyboard.
Looks like you finally upgraded to some mechanical keyboards. What switches did you go with?
These were sent to me. I don't believe they have name brand switches. This one is a GEEZER that runs a fake set of blue's.
Try flipping the space bar around. It may not be possible on those depending on how the space bar is mounted. But if you can it will hit your thumb in a much more natural way.
Hello, tried file operations move, to one kiss folder but now the album folders have playlists not the songs, help... need me kiss... Beth, I hear you calling
Did you combine the music into a single file? It has that option you just usually don't want to do that.
found them in a different folder, thank jeebuz
I have band folder then inside it albums in different folders with the songs but your saying meta tags will have album info so dont need to have a separate folder. I like that, your the man. thank you
