Custom Tear Drop Camper for Ham Radio? A Preview.
Teardrop trailers have been widely popular in the United States since the 1930's. Originally known as " The honeymoon house trailer ". With a Teardrop Trailer you have a comfortable bed and don't have to sleep on the ground. Our Teardrop Trailers have virtually little or no setup unlike tents, or pop-up's.
Bro...that is the perfect Ham Radio Camp Shack! Love it!
Yeah, hopefully the one I'm getting built is better.
KB9VBR has plenty of radio videos with his teardrop!
I'll check it out, Damian. I ordered one out of Tulsa. It should arrive by July.
I have a home built teardrop. For an antenna I mounted a small receiver hitch under the frame, and built a flag pole mount to go in the receiver. I have a harbor freight flag pole, that I currently run a j-pole antenna for 2 meter, on top of. For HF operation, I have a Wolf River Coils antenna that I set up.
In and around the trailer I have installed power poles for plugging in radios, and some pass-through connectors for coax.
Do you have some pictures?
DX Commander Expedition. Great audio entertainment, not forgetting the visuals from neighbours tripping over the radials. Add the three B's (Burger, Beer and Begali) and you've hit all of my trigger zones!
BBB Love it!
Excellent video. Love to camp and play radio at the same time. I have a 6x12 cargo trailer that I am converting into a camper. Set up for ham radio. Looking forward to your upcoming videos. Beautiful spot next to the water and what a sunset. I have the super antenna that I use. Have fun, stay safe and stay healthy!
Hey Beach Bum, love your YT name. I also own the super antenna. I'm thinking about a vertical whip with a coil for this weekend ham radio adventure.
Very nice unit! I use a PackTenna 9:1 endfed from a 31ft jackite pole attached to my RV’s ladder. Also use a wolf river or mfj big stick verticals if room allows. Enjoy...
Hey D&L I like the idea. I'm thinking some kind of permanent mount for telescoping pole.
I've become enamored with those campers. I've been a tent camper for 30+ years, but I'm getting too old and broken down to get up off the ground every morning. Appreciate the insight into this one! 73 de N9GSU
Thanks Rick... but I deciddd not to buy yet.
That is sharp. Didn't you have a video where you had a drive-on antenna mast holder ? Seems like it would be perfect for that.
30,000 and higher here in BC. On the trailer hitch area, I put some sort of pipe I could mount a fibreglass mast for HF etc. My friend VE7NV built one.
I was thinking about welding a pipe there like you said. Then get a very tall TV type mast.
For an antenna I would mount a tube on from or drive on to allow a base for a mast. A buddipole would work or a wire antenna.
Good call!
I have been missing your camping video’s. I think you like the HWEF antennas. Put a bracket to mount a push-up pole. Maybe something for 2 meter/ 440 on the camper. Waiting for your future video, stay safe
Great idea on the 2M. I will be shooting the video tonight
I have been looking at small teardrop campers for a long time. Like you Tom, at my age I do not care to sleep on the ground or set up and break down tents...lol! I live in an HOA that would not allow me to park an RV trailer in my driveway so, I would have to have one that I could store in my garage. This one looks like it would fit. Have fun and keep us posted...73!
Thanks, I decided not to purchase one at this time.... Financial decisions are getting weird nowadays.
@@hamradiocq - Yes, I totally understand.
Very nice brother, would love to have one of those. There sre so many options for antennas that I would probably have 2 or 3 with me with that set up including a 20/40 meter trapped dipole along with a vertical such as a DX Commander Expedition, or a Wolf River Silver Bullitt. Also so manty opportunities for wires that you already have so much practice with. Let the fun begin!
Thanks d. That's a good idea actually, have 2 or 3 options at least so I can vary it on the terrain. Especially if there are trees to hang it on.
Tom. We have those in South Africa. I would install a 108 inch whip antenna with a marine AH4 waterproof tuner just below the antenna. Very very tuff antenna.
Hey, I've never heard of the AH4, looks very interesting!
If you are towing with your SUV, I would go with an MFJ tri magnet mag mount and a Ham Stick on the SUV. Or, a Wolf River Coil. I prefer the Ham Sticks because you tune them and then they are always just ready to go. Very fast to go from parking to on the air. I did a POTA from Texas this weekend and worked Alaska, Maine and Puerto Rico on SSB. BTW, that was with an FTDX-10 go box.
Great tip Don, thank you 73
I would install a SO-239 on the side of the camper and put up a vertical on the ground. Ince camper.
Yeah, I'm thinking vertical telescoping of some kind.
@@hamradiocq 👍
Lot's of great suggestions. Where do you plan to store it? Outside or protected from weather?
I would probably put outside, with a nice cover on it is what I'm thinking. Storage is always an issue isn't it.
it works great WB5MZO...
Yeah unfortunately I went to camp there over Easter Saturday and all the sites were full. : (
Two months, whats happening at N9YO??
Lots of stress, a little burnout, summer too hot to go outside. I'm back
I run a Silver Bullet from Wolf River 80-6 on my scamp trailer. 73
Sounds awesome Bruce
Have you heard anything about the possibility of severe weather coming up this week? I heard something about the possibility of large hail.
Hey sorry for the late reply, I get 100's of comments and I can't get to them all. They come from all 550 of my videos.
Hi Tom, I've been watching you vids, great job especially the txt on screen with the Morse vids. You should take a look at VK2PRC vids, he has a great antenna set up. He also sells a 20/40m coupler . You should take a look at his antenna vids !!
Thanks for the tip! I'll look at it jolly
Fiberglass pole, at least 40 feet, and an inverted V antenna. They make a 60 foot version but it is HEAVY AND DIFFICULT TO RAISE ON YOUR OWN.
Yeah, I can weld some kind of stabilizer on the RV to hold the mast. Tnx fer comment Tommy
@@hamradiocq I got a 5 gallon bucket and about two feet of 3 inch plastic pipe, construction white variety. I can’t seem to recall at this moment what the name is, my age. I also purchased an end cap and a reducer that fits on the three inch pipe. I mixed some concrete in the and plunged the pipe into the concrete which was in the bucket. Fill the bucket about 1/3 with the concrete, adjust the top reducer and I then, after drying I added a sided pole. Portable and put it on the back or front of the camper.
@@hamradiocq I can send photo if you need of the finished product
Did you say 7K? Very cool little camper for the price. I'd use a Calemeon MPAS with a spike mount. This video makes me want to build a custom teardrop using my 5x10 utility trailer.
I don't have time to build a custom trailer. 7K isn't bad
@@hamradiocq Right, 7K is a deal for that sweet setup. My trailer alone was around $1,600. I like the one with kitchen as well. I don't have the time either, probably have someone do the work for me.
I would buy a scorpion hf antenna. Or use a park on mount for a dipole or small beam.
73,
John
I had to look that up. They look awesome.
@@hamradiocq They are fairly handy for occasional outings. I have been wanting to weld one together for years, but have not, as of present. Sure would be a good mig/stick welding project that has something to do with Amateur Radio i suppose.
73 es gud DX de kc5ngx
Buddipole, I'd also get a good end fed and anchor one end to the trailer. Options are endless
A Buddipole is probably a good option. I owned one back in 2005, but I bet they've improved on it.
I would mount a PVC pipe in the front to hold the spider Pole and just do an end fed dipole. And by the way cross your chains until they don't touch the ground. Never drag the chains. The only thing I couldn't figure out when I owned a teardrop camper was where to put my dirty shoes. Let me know what you would do. 73
I was wondering where to put the pipe to hold a telescopic pole.... great comment my friend. Dirty shoes need to stay somewhere outside. I can't say where yet.
how do we comment in the description? lol
watch a tutorial
Very nice de HL1KKC
