Tang Wei's character sings a classic Chinese folk song for Tony Leung's character in Ang Lee's "Lust Caution." The song is called 天涯歌女, which translates to "Wandering Songstress."
"They sing like they are crying. Like dogs howling for their dead masters." Just perfect. I recently saw the movie and it was an impeccable experience. Very good actors, very good plot, everything was so great.
This is an excellent performance by Tanq Wei and Tony. Even though she sang a bit offbeat and the editing is not with out glitches, the subtle emotion of both persons is very dynamic and touching. Tang Wei transpired a sense of understanding and compassion which Tony should have felt. Worth watching it over and over, and listen how a song can be that powerful. Compare to other singers who have music accompliment and beautiful graphic, Tang's song stands out , definitely.
Tanq Wei performs a role of a talented amateur singer. And we are supposed to feel and to understand that. And that is exactly why this beautiful singing with a deliberately made audible of "out of tune" makes the episode so charmingly touching, and that is finally what filles Tony's and my eyes with tears.
Absolutely agree this is a beautiful scene in the movie! I hope that more movies like this are made. As there is so much period atmosphere captured in this movie. Just wonderful! And that with out being a Hollywood action orgy!

I just LOVE how this movie- and this very scene- makes a HUGE contrast between sly and intelligent Chinese women, and the docile, subservient Japanese women! It really helps non-Asians tell Asians apart! I wonder if Ang Lee even deliberately did this. :D
@@lylertat2135 stupid aren’t you listening and analyzing the scene?. They are in a Japanese tea house, “ochaya” and a Geisha is singing of course in Japanese 😒 after, the Chinese girl of course is singing in Chinese and of course the movie is Chinese!!!!! Daaa stupid you don’t analyze the scene!.
If you mean the song sung by the leading actress, it’s a very famous Chinese song, popular in the 1930’s, called 天涯歌女 (may be translated as Wandering Songstress).

one of the greatest movies of the last years !!
A sentimental scene. A history of sorrow and tears for all Chinese in the Pacific War.

I come here after watching Tony Leung as Xu Wenwu in Shang Chi move.
He is a very great actor.
Yes tony leung is greatest actor in Chinese region.
This scene always gives me goosebumps.
wow! nice one. this is one of my favorite chinese movies. thank you very much for uploading this on youtube =)
The English translation is actually really good.
Reminds me of a scene in Peaky Blinders when Grace said she d sing for Tommy Shelby
Bây giờ cô ấy quay lại đóng phim rồi, thương cô ấy của 12 năm trước quá

Why is he crying?
Tradução??
tang wei's singing is still not comparable to zhou xuan's.
Wat kinda subtitles is that!!??? all wrong!!!
Not agree
How one speaks Chinese another speaks Japanese yet they communicate so well, against logic!
They both speak chinese and are chinese inside and outside the movie.
@@baobao-r6i I obviously mean the conversation between Wang jiazhi and the Japanese hostess
