But with you Tom, I’ve gotta say that you truly appreciate us Pinoys, you appreciate our language and how many dialects that we speak and you actually CARE about us. For that, I truly appreciate you for all the work that you’ve done. Bravo!!!🎉👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Being multilingual can also have its pitfalls especially as you get older. Anyone can learn any language if they start at a very young age provided they don’t have any learning disabilities. As you get older, your brain doesn’t retain information as well. I’m a very good example of that. When I was younger (Aklanon from the Philippines), I learned and retained other languages/dialects very quickly and with practice, could master the language in a few months. My native tongue is Aklanon but I also speak Tagalog and English and a bit of Spanish and Japanese. I learned and spoke two more Visayan dialects then and although I can still understand them, I can barely speak them fluently now because I have no one to talk to. My husband is from Luzon and we speak Taglish at home, stationed at present in Okinawa, Japan. Three years or four years ago, I took a class in Hiragana, the simplest form of all Japanese characters. Although I was able to memorize them at that time to pass the class and get an A, now I only know half of what I learned. The key is to speak that other language frequently. In my case, no one really speaks to me in Japanese because although we live in the economy, we work on base surrounded by Americans and the Japanese speakers in school also speak to me in English. My brain has a hard time retaining what I’ve learned long term anymore. It may just be me (we’re both in our 60s) but I could be wrong. The bad thing is, because I am multilingual, Japanese is very easy for me to pronounce (the phonetics is very similar to Pilipino except for the letter U) and can fool any Japanese when I do speak some of the Japanese phrases I know. When I start speaking my little bit of Japanese phrase, they all think I speak the language so they start talking to me like I understand them. They all get bewildered when I answer them with “Gomenasai. Nihonggo wakarimasen” (I’m sorry. I don’t understand. (informal sentence)) because I can pass for Okinawan as well😳. To alleviate this problem, I don’t speak Japanese at all except when I thank them. So my advice, learn another language while you’re still young and practice, practice, practice!

Fun fact: The Philipines doesn’t have 2 languages and 172 dialects, but all 174 of them are technically languages since a dialect is basically just the main language but with and twist and a language is completely different so technically not one Filipino “Dialect” is considered as a dialect instead all of them are technically languages

This is amazing Tom. Next vlog try to speak in Tagalog 😅☺🤗 That's your challenge 😉
