@@TheNisms borrow one, borrow a bike with a power meter, go to a gym with smart turbo trainers, even you can go to shops where you can try out smart trainers for free. Just be creative. Strava does estimations .. but on the other hand, you don’t need a power meter. It’s handy while training, but a heart rate monitor will work too.

Never ever have I seen someone have to pull the brakes on that turn after the climb. Absolute madness. Pretty sure UCI is going to ban MVDP because it's just not fair anymore...

What impresses me the most is being able to do those absolute monstrous attacks at the tail end of doing 318 for five hours. He dropped WvA and Pogačar on Le Tolfe with 738w for a straight minute and then dropped Alaphilippe on the Santa Caterina with a 1,000w for 20 seconds, max of 1362w. That IS crazy, no matter how you look at it. But I can see how some might construe your comment as “Phil can do more watts”. When that’s certainly not true in any regard. MvdP would outshine Phil in anything concerning watts, max watts, watts per kilo on FTP, etc. I say this as a big Phil Gaimon fan, by the way. For what it’s worth.
Agree. 320 average isn’t interesting. These guys have 400+ FTP. To DR’s point he wasn’t even looking back before crossing the line. Probably could have kept this up for another lap or two. 🐐
Thanks for sharing the video. The most amazing thing I saw in Strada Bianche 2021 is that MVDP and Tom Pidcock rode the race WITHOUT gloves. I am pretty sure that they were asked to wear gloves but, man, these two boys were so confident about their bike-handling, even sliding on gravel and going 90+kmph downhill did not warrant any. Chapeau.

I don't think the handlebars snapping the other week was a fault of canyon I think they are going to need some extra support to hold his power. I think he is going to crank and his frame is going to snap in half.
I watched this for a 3rd time now. That rarely happens to me. Just excellent analysis of this race. I've not seen this level of commenting, even though afterwards, after decades of watching bike racing.

That’s nearly two horsepower! Amazing. It’s also interesting to note that when James Watt created the HP as a unit to measure his steam engines, he deliberately made a horsepower greater than the power of a British draft horse - in other words, way more power than a saddle horse can generate - so that his engines would would easily outperform horses in any contest.
77kg and this extraordinary power output reminds me abut Lance... He was also in the same weight category like Mvdp. So heavy weight of cycling. The thing is Mvdp seems to be even more explosive regardless of the race stage. This differentiates him from most of the riders - ability to turn on the throttle when needed.
One race between Van Aert and MVDP both at 100% Cyclo Cross /Classics ----- i would always back MVDP. Over the whole season and consistency, its Van Aert.

Big favourite for Sanremo ! I do not see Van Aert get stronger fast enough, he was not completely at his top. Alaphilippe ? I do not know, but I think so because he is second. MVDP lost some weight, and that makes quite some difference. Hopefully VA can follow the other 2 on the Poggio, a,d then sprint for it. Likely, they want VA at his best at the Tour of Flanders and ROUBAIx, and all others. I doubt if the Golden Race will be organised... And I want to see this MVDP in liege and for sure at the Mur of Huy. Question: will he still be as strong then as now ?
It was a great race, the only thing that would have made it better for me as an American is if Simmons hadn't gotten that flat so we could have seen how much he could hang with the big guns. Alas, that's racing.

It's proven that cycling with no gloves and long white socks adds 50-100w to normalized power.
Oh.. almost forgot... If you keep your mouth closed (as MVDP did in the final 400m take-off), you can add another 150w to that number.
