    Man, there's nothing more satisfying than seeing someone's shop that's been well settled into over time. Every part tells a story, and likely reminds us of our parent's or grandparent's shops when we were growing up. Thanks for sharing that with us!

    Great video John! Me and my son in law have been debating different storage methods in our shop. This video gave us lots to do! You’ve answered some questions we didn’t even know how to ask! Thanks for the great videos and the lessons on blacksmithing that don’t talk down to those of us that finally realized our dream of having a forge and anvil. But like a dog chasing a car, we really didn’t know what to do now that we got them…

    John... Give this a read. THANK YOU for all of your teachings, lessons, encouragement, safety education expressed, forging ideas, business insights, and banjo stummins.
    I am closing shop after something like 4-5 years. Everything has been packed away and I am finding it just so difficult to make myself do the final move of things into storage. It feels like a death to me really, but it just has to be done to better provide for my son and I, and to accommodate the necessity of time and dedication thereof for a boy barely over one years old of whom does not have a mom.
    I wanted to tack on my insights for tool storage though. My most common hardy tools and punches and chisels are on my anvil in pipes and a "veranda" style tray around my anvil stand; just as your's.
    For my other hardy tools, i notched the furthest point of the shanks to resemble a gut hook from a skinning knife. And i hang them way above my head but just barely in reach on a thin braided steel cable attached from Wall to wall.
    My tongs and spring swages have always been on an old, multi-tier newspaper rack that I reinforced with some small round stock under the rails. It was a great find, very sturdy... Its like the ones you'd find in a library where they have articles archived from long ago. I found it in the basement of a building I remodeled years back as a charity job converting it to a battered women's and children's shelter.
    Punches and drifts and chisels i have hung on the wall in the slots of the base portion of one of those shelf systems that are connected by vertical pipes. The cheapo ones. The one i have is 4' x 2.5' and has 13 rows of 8 holes measuring 1.25" x 1.75" + smaller gap holes between those basically over 140 holes in rigid plastic to wedge hand tools of all kinds.
    My hammers hang under my gas forge I built myself upon a rack i made for hammers and it spans 3 sides.
    God bless you all, have a blast with the art, I love you all and wish you the best.

    I have ADHD, so honestly the 5-gallon bucket is a great system for me (actually several buckets). When I'm done with a tool I can toss it in the general direction of the bucket and it's put away, otherwise I'll never find it (I once spent 10 minutes looking for a pair of tongs that I was actually holding at the time so this is important for me). If I can't find a thing, it's easy to dump the bucket, find the tool, and then refill the bucket. If I have to put a tool in a specific place then the only thing that I can guarantee is that I'll never actually put that tool in that place. It took me the better part of a decade to realize this about myself, but if you have ADHD then efficiency trumps literally everything else and this system works for me so I use it.

    John, You have some great ideas for tool storage. Another great video. In my shop, I have a concrete floor and the moisture wicks up through it. I noticed that you have sledge hammers set on your floor with the heads down. That is how I used to keep mine as well. The problem I ran into is that the moisture wicking up from the floor causes the wood in the eye of the hammer head to slowly dry rot and one day as you are using the sledge, the head flies off. I have a portable post vise that is mounted on an old flywheel, so now I set the hammers on their heads on the flywheel base to keep them off the floor. Maybe in Colorado the floor moisture is not as big of a problem.

    • @HoeDizzleFoShizzle
      @HoeDizzleFoShizzle 2 года назад +3

      Sounds like there's no waterproof barrier installed underneath your concrete floor or it has failed. You could seal the whole floor in an epoxy resin sealer or tanking slurry which should solve your issues with rising damp if it's really bothering you that much.

    • @bobvines00
      @bobvines00 2 года назад

      @@HoeDizzleFoShizzle How long do those sealers/slurries last? I have the same problem that Paul has, but in my garage. (My Blacksmith "shop" is in the backyard, mostly under a roof that is over an old, huge BBQ that the previous owners built. There is no concrete under my "shop," just dirt, so all tooling stays inside my "workshop.")

    During my naval days I used a Peli mobile tool chest whose price today is an eye-watering price! I bought mine 20 years ago for about £600 + VAT to store my surgical instruments. Waterproof, dust-proof and virtually unbreakable, years later it's used to hold all our hand forged tools we use for gold prospecting. John, thank you for this excellent video. ~Wendi 🌻

    John, my dad did some wheelwrighting in the 50's on the farm but our working place was outside, under a tree. I often helped him, joining outer rims for oxwagon wheels, him leading with a 2 pound hammer, showing me where to hit with the 12 pounder. We however only had a 10th of the tools you have! No electricity, so everthing was done with handtools. Brings back great memories!

    Every time I can't find a tool I tell myself this is unacceptable & then eventually I find it or a substitute & do the job & things get more & more mixed till I have to stop & attempt organisation & this ugly business repeats & slowly I build wooden boxes about 12x18x4 inches or bigger if needed & put tools for a particular job within & this has helped me cope with jobs that in my case often happen in different places so that things have to be portable. The joy that comes from wanting something & finding it in a box where I expected it to be is almost overwhelming set against the misery that comes when I have forgotten to put a tool back. Strange how I let tool finding take me on such an emotional roller coaster, but I am slowly getting better & that encourages me to keep working at it. Thanks for sharing!
