What Happens When Rimada Figs Revert? Col de Dame Rimada vs Blanc vs Noir

  • I purchased a Col de Dame Rimada fig tree early this spring, but it appears to have lost its variegation and reverted back to a Col de Dame Blanc. In this video, I compare my Col de Dame Rimada (reverted) fig to a Col de Dame Blanc AND a Col de Dame Noir fig. How do the flavors of each fig compare?
    Did you know that a Col de Dame Rimada fig is simply a mutated, variegated Col de Dame Blanc fig? Taste-wise, they're identical! Enjoy the video!

      @@christopherrizzo5421 how cold? Any frost/freeze will ruin the remaining fruit, but if all you care about is the tree getting injured, there is no reason to pull them in for temps above 23 degrees. Fig roots are hardy to the upper teens and the wood from anywhere from 0-15 degrees depending on variety. I say 23 degrees for container trees because I've witnessed forecast lows be off by 5-6 degrees.

    good comparison. i am getting amazing col de dame blancs in my cold climate right now. i bring this tree in on frost nights to ripen the last few figs. with the cold and wet you would think the quality of figs isnt good but they are. best part the swd arent around when this guy ripens. i have had cracks but no splitting. i am making copies of this one next year to abuse. i am going to see if i can get splitting or watery figs. i have had 1st year top growth die in the cold. other than not being cold hardy this fig takes my crap end of season weather. i dont mind having to drag this tree around to get an early start. this tree is worth the trouble. this is my favorite fig.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  5 лет назад

      MRgreen what I’m finding is the Col de Dame’s are not a sweet fig. You need heat to develop sugars (which is why you can grow lemons and limes in Zone 9 PWN but not oranges). I, too, am noticing my Col de Dame’s are handling the much cooler temps well because it is the flavor and texture that makes the Col de Dame, not the sweetness. I think these Col de Dame’s would be an excellent choice for a PWN grower that seems mild temps all year round since they don’t rely on sugars for their appeal like most syrupy sweet varieties do.

      @@666Necropsy maybe pH strips? It's tough to say. I can tell you the Col de Dame's have a similar flavor and texture. They are some of the least sweet figs I've ever tasted, but something about their flavor and texture is just harmonious. The Blanc is stronger than the Noir, but the Noir exhibits much better resistance to rain, splitting and pests, at least on these immature trees. Noir's productivity was outstanding, but Blanc yielded the best 2 figs I had all season (although not nearly as many). Sticking them in the fridge makes them even better due to the thick texture. It makes it like a pastry.

I just pulled all my tomatoes onto the ground to cover them in this cold. We'll see how it goes. It sounds like it is going to be downright frigid for this time of year. I hope this isn't indicative of how the entire winter will be. You should definitely go big and plant everything you can handle. That way, if things fail, you'll have backups that may do well. It's devastating when you only plant a few things and it doesn't work out. Hedge your bets, I say.

      My understanding is the variegation is a genetic anomaly and very unstable. Genes are a funny thing because just because you have genes for something doesn't mean you have to express them. (Example: you can be genetically susceptible to heart disease, but if you lived your life eating a healthy diet, exercising, getting plenty of sun and fresh air, not smoking, drinking and doing drugs, you may not express it!) I would assume sometimes the plants stop expressing the genes, which may be easy since it is clearly a recessive trait.

      randymack1234 no, I do not. My experiences with Brown Turkey aren’t positive. I don’t care for the figgy-melon figs. I think they’re bland, but that’s just my personal taste. Others love them because of their large size and fresh taste.
      A Col de Dame Blanc tastes nothing like a Brown Turkey. They’re almost nothing alike. For your location, I really recommend trialing varieties in buckets like I am to see what does well. However, the more humidity tolerant figs for my climate (my summers are very similar to yours) were I-258, Smith, Bordissot Blanca Negra, Olympian, Col de Dame Noir, Violette de Bordeaux and Martinenca Rimada. They all maintained closed eyes and were resistant to ants and pests. My best tasting fig of the year was Col de Dame Blanc, but I had issues with it splitting and attracting ants. It was so good I’m willing to deal with its problems. My best all-around fig was I-258.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  4 года назад

      "Rimada" simply means variegated. It is similar to albino - there are white stripes, as in albino striping. It is a rare genetic mutation that upon luck can overcome a random branch. If it happens to a branch, we call that a "sport" and if cuttings are taken exclusively from that branch, it can maintain the unstable genetics. Some trees revert. The mutation is often unstable, so you can have it for years and it can suddenly disappear.
