Exploring Al Capones Former 16.5 Million Dollar Mansion Built In 1898

- The 45-room manor was built in the style of Italian High Renaissance. The unique interior features, such as the ornately carved wood and gilded molding, marble columns and accents, frescoed ceilings, gargoyles and the like, were crafted in Europe and shipped to the United States, where they were assembled on site. The interior was designed by renowned French interior decor experts Allard et Fils, which accounts for the distinctly French feel in some of the rooms. The home is anchored on either side by a large library and drawing-room. Between these are two wings, one containing a breakfast room and dining room and the other a billiard room and den, with a separate wing leading to a large gallery. These wings all lead to a grand staircase in the center of the house. The second floor has nine bedrooms, three dressing rooms, and seven baths. The third floor and raised basement are servant quarters. With the mansion, Trumbauer also designed the wrought-iron gates at the entrance to the estate along with a small gatehouse, a powerhouse, and an eight-car garage.

The fact is that this is actually the Elkins Estate located in Elkins Park, PA. The estate originally contains seven buildings, and this one is the Elstowe Manor. The properties were built for William L. Elkins, a railroad tycoon, and his family, and designed by Horace Trumbauer . Elstowe Manor was sold in 1932 by Elkin's grandson to the Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine d'Ricci as a religious retreat. Thus, the dorm-like rooms of Gregory Hall, as noted by the key holder in this video. The retreat house was sold in 2006 due to economic challenges to the Land Conservancy of Elkins Park, PA. After years of defaulted payments to the Sisters and years of legal battles, the property was ultimately sold to Landmark Developers in August 2019. Al Capone has no relation to this manor and I believe people would find this more interesting with it's true history in your walk about.
He doesn't know anything, Capone is in the title, just to get clicks.
thank you so much for your details👍
And he was a terrible tour guide ..
@@dakotabarron2105 Yes, he made it quick because they didn't want to get caught trespassing.
@@bradleyharting6038 He didn't show the rooms well and he went in no order as to get the layout ...
One summer I got to meet some of the Capone Children and we had play dates it was one of the finest times of my life! My Father arranged the play dates my father was a Retired Military Cheif Master Sargeant and A Sheriff where we lived in the County! I Love The Capone Family they are such wonderful people this was in the 1970s I cried when they had to leave they were visiting on summer vacation!
That’s so cool! What a story!
I’ve been a home builder for 25 years. They don’t make home like that anymore! Absolutely stunning!! I would love to own and live in that home.
Is it just me or does it look like they are turning it into a jail or dormitory-hospital type of establishment?
And what would it cost today. Just a question?
@@garybrown4449 I know, I'm curious about the square footage; then you'd have to consider what it would take to restore it. The marble looks okay, but you'd need major plaster work and plumbing. I wonder about the electrical and foundation. :)
I'd love to get into that, how do I go about it?
It's actually not that amazing that it's still standing after 120 yrs. Have you been to Europe??? 1000 year old places.
This Mansion was built by William Elkins in 1898. ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!!
Yeah, this place has nothing to do with Capone. What it DOES have is one of the most beautiful, sensuous, staircases ever designed. Its undulating shape, the brilliant way it is lit by skylights and windows, and it's central location are all designed to make ascending / descending the stairs an experience. Brilliant. These places could never be duplicated today and the cost of maintaining them has become prohibitive. Wages were low back then and you could maintain an army of servants to upkeep these places. Additionally, most were NOT lived in full time and a few months at various times of the year were all they were occupied. Such extravagance is long gone.
If you find a tour of John Gotti’s home you will find the same staircase. Only thing is, it was added to the house after it was built. It was a disaster trying to get it to fit. The stairs are very steep and narrow
yeah i have found this channel is a bunch of click bait to try and make money. The gotti house was never even owned let alone even set foot in by Gotti... it was his daughter who bought it and the played it off like it was Johns.
Growing up I had a huge obsession with Al Capone & The Prohibition era.
I remember dreaming about going to visit Alcatraz. True American Gangster😅
I am amazed at the pristine condition of the ceilings. There do not appear to be any cracks or water damage. The previous owners must have been diligent about keeping the roof in good condition. It's a magnificent mansion.
This over 100 year old home looks in great shape, better then some of the newer homes you tour. The way they made homes back in in day, they were built to last!
Real craftsmanship. They dont build like this anymore. Such beauty. Good video
Glad to see that it is under construction rather then that of a wrecking ball. I believe it was designed by Horace Trumbaugher who also designed Lynnwood Hall.
Is this the one in Florida? It doesn’t match the price or the year built. Plus it’s not showing the same as the one in florida
I agree
@@mjoinga no....it's in Pennsylvania.. Elkins Park just adjacent to Philadelphia.
I was about to say it looks very similar to Lynwood.
@@creativo4ever564 too bad it’s in a fentanyl state .
For being built in 1898 the house is in great shape
The Massive Size and opulence is so overwhelming,,,,and to think this over a 100 plus years,,it gives you a reality of his vision and Wealth....My God.
If only these walls could talk. Just imagine the stories. What beauty indeed!!! Such detail like no other. Can you imagine how much it would cost to recreate such beauty
This is Elkins Estate. I couldn’t find any connection to Al Capone🤷♂️. Beautiful though!
This house is absolutely stunning!!!
Why were homes made with such detail and now they’re thrown up in a few days with no character? Something just doesn’t seem to add up. Thank you for sharing
$
You get what you pay for
Expense. To have such intricate details, materials costs a fortune. To be quite honest right now with inflation & covid it's taking a lot longer & a lot more money to put up a house now. Things are on back order, lumber is costly.
Facts! Even cheaper homes look different from all the other houses on the block. Now all homes look alike.
@@Ganiscol not quite. Houses now are nearing $700k and they’re built cheap and crammed in with your neighbours. I know this mansion is worth millions but us peasants can’t afford that. We should still get houses that are strong. Yay capitalism!
That is really gorgeous. I'm really surprised that no one ever bought it like I said it is really gorgeous
It is in excellent condition considering its age.
This is the Elstowe Manor on the Elkins Estates. I wonder why after so many comments have pointed out that this manor had absolutely no connection to Al Capone that they don't edit the inaccurate title.
It’s a legitimate shame this is just sitting there neglected. One of the most detailed and unbelievably stunning homes I’ve seen.
It's not neglected it's owned, they use it for weddings, it's called the Elkins Estate, in Elkins Park PA....it has nothing to do with Capone. This kid is an idiot.
I live there now
Beautiful!!
Looked up this mansion on Wikipedia. There is absolutely no mention of Al Capone having any connection to this mansion.
Right, because he one home in Chicago and in Florida
@@barbara60626 i think Capone had a home at Eastern shore MD. He owned. It was said Al.was a sweet and kind man to all people. He was good to the poor .
So Beautiful.
This is STUNNING. I’ve never seen such detailed craftsmanship. It looks Timeless. 🙆🏻♀️
folks in the late 1890's knew how to build a home.
Yeah until these shitty developers decided to demolish and destroy them forever. Think Vanderbilt mansions in NYC on fifth avenue. I wanna know the location of this mansion.
This basement was the servants quarters. ThisGrecianand Italian Architect was very reknown.
A great way to create a ton of skilled labor positions for people deciding not to attend college, normalize custom woodworking and attention to detail again
So true
It looks like the Palace of Versailles
WC stands for Water Closet also known as "the toilet". It's pretty common in europe but I guess not as much in the US.
I was going to say the same thing. That and all of those smaller rooms were similar to mansions in Europe. Bedrooms to put all the invited guests/entertainment/employees/ect., in after the party or event was over. Which might be days or longer.
I found the tour guide very impressive for knowing what "WC" meant! "Kudos to you guy 😉!"
This is a gorgeous estate places like this need to be redone for history and never torn down
This is beautiful, they should turn it into a hotel to remember him
Can you imagine all of the secret tunnels and everything underneath that house and all of the secret rooms
Now that's a thought for sure! You've definitely got my curiosities in a spin; I'd like to know about any possible architecture in the basement??
It was never owned by Al Capone. Just a gigantic fancy mansion and the OP used Capone’s name to get views.
@@AustinHunter8
Absolutely
Click bait!
Not Al Capones house
Absolutely exquisite. The homes back then were masterpieces and crafted to perfection with much attention to detail. I love homes like this!
There was an old house I used to go to for a family and working. They found old shoes and a note from early 1800’s. So interesting and touching
So many, many hallways, and dark...I'd be lost and no one would ever see me again!
This mansion looks like the show. The gilded age. Beautiful
This was not ever owned or occupied by Al Capone. Beautiful house but kind of annoyed with being mislead by title.
Love this Mansion, if I had the money I would definitely buy it
It’s sad that the gift and talents of craftsmanship is no longer something people aspire to. Very sad indeed
This place is spectacular...I can imagine living there walking those long beautiful halls at night..just gorgeous even in disarray at places
This mansion is absolutely stunning...I wonder if its on a protected status being unvandalized and all...I'm absolutely thinking someone owns this home 100%...power still on and everything
It belongs to a bank, and is not listed.
How are people able to roam around in this house without the owners permission?
@@wendylederer367 I'm quite sure they were granted permission by the owners and probably had to sign certain waivers for insurance purposes.
@@CS-ru4xd probably right

The chandelier is so beautiful the walls the interior the pain everything is so gorgeous wow...🤗💓🌍
It's obviously not abandoned. Under construction. It's cool that they let you in to film it.
I just looked up his mansions...Not seeing this one as Al Capone...Where is this please
I never heard of al Capone ever living there
There will never be homes like this. Amazing
Oh my God that Mansion is absolutely gorgeous. ❤️❤️👍👍
What a shame that such a beautiful home is sitting there not being used. This could easily be turned into a small college. I love the Titanic staircase!! Great video. Thanks !! :o)
I'm sure there is a plan in place for it's use. Some of those framed rooms look pretty recent. I would be willing to bet that the process will take a while especially if it's going to be for public use. Bringing structures up to code and adhering to safety requirements can be costly AND time consuming. Sometimes renovations are done in spurts due to supply needs and/or available funding or both.
I worked with a woman who introduced me to her father and her family.her Dad was befriended to Capone as a young boy. They were poor and every Christmas Al played Santa Clause. He saw a different side of Al. In every house that Al lived in there were secret passageway to the garage and a hidden room like a vault for him to hide in. Before Al died he bought this family a small farm and a restaurant/cafe for them. I’m taking up for Al because he had people killed, but this family was shown a special friendship with Al. He left them money too.
Sure
I wonder what Al Capone would think of Chicago now?
@@ssherrierable haha people say anything don’t they
This was superb why did Al need such a big house walk who sitting all these rooms that's amazing I like to know the history of this and what are they use it for afterwards did he know that many criminals that could stay in their place at one time this is very interesting I need to find out it's amazing beautiful thank you so much
@@ssherrierable
Agreed.
Wow beautiful place
What oppulance! Incredibly beautiful. This must have taken years to build. The rooms just go on and on. This would make a great posh hotel for the very rich.
I like that there’s no vandalism
I know this isn't Al Capone's mansion but it really does seem like the epitome of what a real mega mob boss's mansion would look like, big rooms everywhere.👌🏽
Capitalism is essentially organized crime anyway: the rich using their wealth to make it legal to systematically steal from the poor. So, in that sense, most of the people who owned mansions like these, may as well have been mob bosses.
I wished that I had a place like this and all my problems would be solved
Except the electric bill
Top floor was designed for the housekeeping staff, the many small rooms were bedrooms.
Don’t think Al ever lived here
I wish I could have seen this place back in the day, when he lived there, wonder all kinds of things about this estate! Thank you
Do more like this!
@ Steven Rice Don’t idolize the son of a bitch.
Too bad we were misinformed; and possibly the person posting this was too... 🙄
Oh well, we live and we learn, then on to something new! Cheers!
Capone NEVER owned it!!!
Capone never owned this….look it up folks
Ok, Ok I got it I did my research after I wrote the comment. I do thank you all for letting me know I made a mistake! Trust me it won’t happen again 🤪🤪
obviously the palace was sold and started to renew. so beautiful building.
Craftsmanship is amazing im fascinated
What a beautiful home. Great design. Thank You for sharing.
So beautiful, thank you for sharing your adventure with us!
Beautiful home
Awesome tour 👍😁👍
Tremendous potential and built solid as a rock..I hope someone restores it.
What a magnificent home!! Hope that it gets restored!!
I saw a documentary on Al Capone and this was not his mansion his was on palm island in Florida keys a seven bed house. It's the only mansion he owned, I do love this house. Thank you for showing us this.
They built them to last back then. Beautiful mansion.
This was never Al Capone's mansion. Beautiful and fascinating nonetheless.
I agree. Not certain. But just dosent add up
It’s called “click bait”. Just to get one’s interest piqued. Nice place non the less
@@traceyaffleck1706 Most clickbait is at least partially accurate/exaggerated. Straight up lies are lame as hell
Who’s is it ? And where is it ?
Beautiful home.
There was nothing to dislike about the work you put into the video. I enjoyed it and you deserve all the thumbs up there is! Love from Melbourne Australia
Regardless it wasn't Al Capone's home, I agree with you Alexandria Radio. He still had chosen a beautiful place to tour with some interesting history; and then generously shared it with his viewers. "I definitely enjoyed the beautiful architecture!" ❤️😉🇺🇸
Only the lie about Al Capone.
Beautiful home 😎👍
Beautiful... awesome home, thanks for taking the time to share🙂
Beautiful explore. Thank you for taking us along.
Yes indeed, thank you for your generosity for sharing with us, it was quite interesting to take this tour along with you! 😉
Wow what an amazing beautiful place. Loved this video, you did amazing job filming it. Thank you for this explore..
WOW, Just WOW................. Great house, Thank you.
Outstanding! 👍
Beautiful mansion!!!
Superb workmanship! Alas, they don't built them like this anymore. Everything is mass produced nowadays, nothing is handcrafted by artisans. I do hope this splendid home is preserved and restored. So many of these magnificent mansions have been demolished to make way for cookie cutter housing projects or cell-block apartments. Study the sad history of the splendid Schwab mansion in New York City.
Breathtakingly beautiful! The fireplace, flooring, built-ins, ceilings, paintings etc. Capone had great style and taste😮
House is amazing
This is a guilded age mansion, they were Amazing. LYNNEWOOD HALL in P.A. is another one. The large room was an Art Gallery, they collected high end art. Those smaller, common looking rooms would have been for a Crew of Servants to keep that place up. Absolutely Beautiful !! Looks like it might have been a Private School at one time, those look like Dorm Rooms upstairs near the end of your video. Well Done, you just got another Subscriber ! Very Respectfully done vlog !
Omg this is amazing an beautiful, love the stairs an architecture, thanks for sharing
This is a perfect example of when people were real craftsmen! Granted with the kind of money invested, you could get the finest craftsmen! Beautiful home, hope it is saved for future generations to view!
Very interesting and very large mansion.
Absolutely amazing. I hope it's being restored to be a hotel and every room is utilized; otherwise, it's wasted space. You could fit 7 families 👪
If those walls could talk
This breathtaking ,georgeous!! Thank you this amazing video.Think its about time to bring back this kind of beauty in homes that they did in 1898.
Family and friends who came from Italy untill they could be settled in and family members along with the staff... or people wanting to stay for holiday its easy if you think about it! Elegant Home!
I'm pretty excited for this one. Wow!!
Thank you, thank you for this and all videos. At a time we don't go to far from home it's like travel😁. God bless you and we enjoy your work 💝
Wow! Super tremendous mansion! Amazing! Thanks for the tour!👍😊
Amazing place, great exploration.🔥🔥🔥
I would think all of those rooms on 3rd floor were for live in staff.
The doors and molding belong to the rooms being remodeled with the metal framing.
Looks like maybe making a hotel or something like that out of it...I know I would.
You could hold Weddings in there.
The rooms were for the sisters who lived there. Seeing that retreats were held there, some of the rooms were used for the retreatants.
What a Grand House! With such attention to detail. Loved it!
It does resemble Lynwood hall… you can tell the same person built it!
This was so awesome to few, I wish I was there to see more of the ornate details.
You did a great job... it’s very Newport Rhode Island in many rooms... architecturally like marble house!
Can you imagine, heating this home, just, fucking, imagine lol. I live in Nova Scotia, I couldn’t even fathom it
Absolutely Gorgeous the details of the entire place is historical... You could almost turn this place into apartments or Luxury Hotel. I hope whomever is remodeling it keeps restoring to it's original design! Thank you for sharing you don't see homes like this anymore❤️
I wish they made houses like these today, every house back then seemed to be like a canvas for art and rly anything and it always turned out amazing in every room, just imagine all the time spent in each and every room and how many people back then worked and how long it would of taken but in the end a stunning house hopefully it stays that beautiful
Houses like this are still built. In addition it’s a custom house so obviously it’s going to have a lot of intricate details.
Whoever has this originally built ((has nothing to do with Al Capone)) probably paid a lot of money by their standards in those days.
You too could very easily have a house like this built…. If you are rich and can afford the costs like the person who had this made obviously was and could.
What a gorgeous house look at the getting ready to fix it up
This is the most beautiful elegant mention that I have ever seen a Bandan al really had taste
Absolutely beautiful
Its really random to use Al Capone has the owner. He never owned or lived here. Kind of random.
