  • The Vietnamese EV brand VinFast is an unknown name from a country with a tiny auto industry. But the company has already opened six stores in California and has plans for many more. It also is building a $2 billion factory in North Carolina and is planning an IPO, though timing is uncertain. It has partnerships with leading industry firms, such as LG Chem, Gotion, Pininfarina, ZF. And it has recruited alumni from some of the world’s top automakers, including Ford, General Motors, Toyota, Hyundai, Porsche, Jaguar-Land Rover, Volkswagen, and others.

    There’s 0 chance in hell that I’d ever pay over 40k for a car and then have to pay for a battery on a separate bill monthly and for a brand no one has ever heard of. This is doomed to fail in this country. This is not Vietnam, the US is massive and 310 miles is something that would be used up in less than a week, but they want it to be a 1 month allowance. What happens if the car is stolen or totaled in an accident, who pays for the battery?

      They have to start somewhere. From what I've heard they are getting pointers and directions from some pretty big companies. Namely Porsche for one. The bar is high for sure. But they have the deep pockets to make the changes necessary to stay alive in our market and with everyone going ev this couldn't be a more perfect time to jump in. Time will tell. I won't buy one until there has been a minimum of 4-5 generations. We shall see.

    I have to admit Pininfarina did a great job giving Vinfast VFs a unique, elegant and beautiful design. Most of modern vehicle brands are recognized by their small logos, which cannot tell them apart from a distance, especially at night. However, if you look at a Vinfast's front, back or sides, particularly VF9, you know it's Vinfast with letter Vs and the unique V-shaped led lines from a distance or at night.

    I think the battery lease program is not going to go over well in the USA. Because no one wants to pay $450 to 750 for a EV and still have to fork over another$110 a month along with insurance payments.
    I think Vinfast cars are beautiful but I think they should have started out with the VF 6 or VF7 they are the 2 best looking vehicles. And should be cheaper than VF8 or 9.
    The average American spends about $22K to S28k for gas cars so spending $40k plus for unknown plus paying for battery on top of that each month is a little too much for most Americans. They need the Vf5,vf6 and vf7 to be in the $30k range.

      This is kind of the confusing part, with the battery lease. I think their intention is good, where they’re not passing the risk of owning the battery to customers. Because if you lease to own, the car price would be higher, cost of repair and maintenance, and cost of disposal is yours to pay.
      The tricky and challenging part for Vinfast is customers will think this additional costs and not incentives.

    The car looks great. I really like the idea of leasing battery. Unfortunately not alot of consumers aware how fast a lithium battery degrade. They still think battery will last 10 years if they look after it lol. No! It degrades everytime you drive and charge. If you leave your car outdoor, it will degrade even faster. Lithium battery technology hasn't progressed far and will not be for a long time. Also, when battery gets below a certain capacity, the battery is very volatile meaning it could explode. This is why owning your battery is not a good idea! You rather not pay up front, and always be guaranteed to have a battery working at 100% capacity all the time. Also, alot of people think only market is the end consumers. There are car rental markets where they would want insurance on the battery. Most car insurance do not cover wear and tear. This is why I think VinFast will have an edge over other makers. Having said that, I'd like to see VinFast to provide customisable battery subscription so it will fit with budget at all levels.

    People keep talking about the Battery leasing program and make it a key point of failure. Let's be clear that, now almost car manufacturers provide a warranty for their cars at 10 years/150000 miles. It sounds like VinFast is doing something wrong with the battery leasing when everybody else has already done that without the leasing, right? No, Tesla will not replace your battery if it still takes in the charge even if the remaining capacity dropped below 70% and you have to stay with that until it completely dies. The Resell value of an EV is mostly based on the remaining capacity of the vehicle itself. More importantly, when you buy an EV with a battery included, you lose the chance to get a new battery with the new technology. For example, the new Tesla Model 3 gets a new battery pack with better quality and anyone who had the earlier Model 3 will be stuck with their battery forever. with the battery leasing program, VINFAST ensures that old cars can be updated to with new techs, especially, battery tech.

    The battery leasing model was tried by Nissan and Renault (as an option) in Europe years ago. It didn't go so well as the economics were not great on the buy side. Also, since then car batteries have proved to be more resilient than originally though, even the first gen Leaf battery had performed better people expected. Now different battery chemistry make the batteries more resilient and the replacement cost will likely be even cheaper down the line. With reuse as energy storage or recycling as ore, people replacing batteries on old vehicles could get money back much like how car owners can get money for selling catalytic converters.
    The biggest depreciation in the value of the cars. Whether the battery has 70% capacity or 90% wont be the biggest factor in car value and new buyers of EVs now would probably want to change vehicles for the latest model/ tech before reduced range really impacts them anyway.
    Personally I contract lease my EV (in the UK the lease prices seem to be be more reasonable than some other part of the world). I would not like to have both the downsides of leasing and buying but none of the upsides. I think Vinfast would be better off changing their model, it may work short term but not long term as businesses and consumers realise they are paying a premium for a battery that isn't actually degrading much.
    I think one thing the leasing model can do is provide Vinfast revenue during economic downturns, though consumers who are used to buying vehicles may find they don't like to be tied to a contact and not go for the same approach again, as with Nissan and Renault.

    • @AssassinCreep2552
      @AssassinCreep2552 Год назад +4

      I agree.ost EV battery's don't degrade to 70% for 8 to 10 years.
      By then consumers have moved on and bought newer EV's with better tech and battery life. I really feel that VinFast cars like the VF6 and VF7 are not only beautiful but that they should be cheaper than the VF 8 or 9. Right now America is on the edge of a recession , food and other stuff is too high. People are trying to save where they can and protect the environment too and going electric is important. But if you live in s state like Florida where there's just hundred of miles of emptiness between major cities all vinfast vehicles need to have a minimum range of 300 miles. I wish vinfast good fortune. Hope they will bring out the VF6 And VF7 sooner.

    • @YoushaAhmad
      @YoushaAhmad Год назад +3

      @@AssassinCreep2552 I agree with your comments. I didn't mention that 15 year old plus cars in Europe often get a second life in Africa. There they may be even more accepting of a third hand car with even around 60% range at a much depreciated costs compared to buying a cheap new car. Wealthy counties have rapid consumer trends that cause rapid depreciation of old tech. As you mention, the batteries themselves don't degrade much.
      I would say as far is range is concerned, more CCS rapid chargers can help negate the need for 300 miles EVs. Having said that, I am probably looking at things from a UK/ Europe perspective and I know in the US people drive long distances more regularly.
      Also, yes I think a big recession is coming (worse than '08 and 2000) and I think this will impact EV companies a lot. I also, wish VinFast well but the timing with the IPO doesn't look good. Though, funnily enough, the high battery ease costs could provide some cash flow during down time (albeit from people who probably won't get a battery lease EV again).
      As a side note, I think the interiors of VinFast cars look like they need to be improved in build quality for the money, big screens aren't enough.

    • @proud4373
      @proud4373 Год назад +5

      Now the question is why you have to buy insurances for your car even though you know it's going to depreciate in few years or even you are done with all the payments. Let's talk about Vinfast battery leasing program. EV batteries make up a large chunk of the cost in many EVs. Vinfast selling its batteries separately offers many benefits. It lowers the initial purchase prices, and customers don't have to pay additional taxes on the batteries. This leads to much lower monthly payments. Also, Vinfast will replace the battery pack for free whenever the battery capacity dips below 70% as it actually happens after years of use, like the case of the Finnish man who finally blew up his Tesla 2013 Model S because the Tesla battery price was almost the same of the value of the car itself. Why bothering to fix it! I was also told that a Nissan Leaf owner was stuck with his car after over 8 years due to the battery falling below 70%. The Leaf owner could not even sell or drive it because the bill for a full battery replacement was about the same as the value of the car itself. In addition, an LA couple-husband and wife had been stuck with their about $50K bills to replace the 2 batteries for their Tesla's. Did you see all the battery problems there? Hadn't they all wished that they would have had Vinfast battery leasing program, so they could drive or sell their EVs without any problems. Most surprisingly, Vinfast battery leasing program won't cost you an arm and a leg. The leasing program costs you as low as about 1 buck daily and you can drive or re-sell your EVs whenever you want without worrying about the large sum of money to foot the surprising battery replacement bill.

    • @YoushaAhmad
      @YoushaAhmad Год назад

      @@proud4373 You bring up some interesting points with used car owners. I have heard that here in Europe, replacing a gen one leaf battery is reasonable in cost, though many owners would probably rather use that money towards a newer electric car, even a used 2018 Leaf.
      As for the leasing, at almost 200USD/ month for the VF9, the leasing cost is a lot on a car already charging a premium given what some have said about its build quality. After round eight years (though I think the batteries should be fine longer for most long term or used buyer), you are looking at around an eye watering 20K USD cost in battery leasing. That is far above the current cost to produce the batteries (around 150USD per KW capacity), even with the high prices of lithium.
      If a long term owner or used car buyer decided to replace the battery they could recoup some costs from selling the battery, not the case with a lease. Also with time, I expect there to be more OEM battery replacement options for old cars reducing the costs. For someone worrying about range depleting, they may as well buy a similarly priced electric car and self insure by putting some money away (less than 200USD/ months) in a portfolio of dividend stocks.
      I think from a business perspective, it looks like VinFast is trying to generate easy long term cashflow by locking people into the leasing programme. That is their choice but I think it will be terrible for their reputation. We will have to see down the line.
      Though, I think they may either pivot soon or get wrecked with the recession. Many buyers may now be turned off by the locked in monthly costs.
      As a pro free market, globalist I want VinFast and other manufactures from emerging markets to do well. I just think their business model is unsustainable and their cars are a bad deal for consumers who may as well wait for a Kia EV9 (vs the VF9) or take one of the many other options for the VF8. I hope they change by at least providing more options.

    • @YoushaAhmad
      @YoushaAhmad Год назад +1

      @Con Sáu Mập ở Bình Dương Apologies, the 200 a month figure was CAD, I didn't realise. Regardless it doesn't change that fact that it is still grossly overpriced, just a little less. In fact, it seems that the standard monthly costs will come in at the excess charge for additional miles on my leased car (9 pence per mile over 8K/yr on an Ioniq 5). For my leased car I get to hand the keys back to that in four years and get a new one. VinFast will change the leased battery once it finally gets to 70% however long that takes. 70% may be fine for many but it is a large threshold before the lease is even used. This is interesting as the lease is targeting those who are battery/ range conscious.
      I understand that at present the VF9 is unique in its position as a three row SUV but for a long term it is worth waiting for products from other manufacturers to provide more choice, such as the Kia EV9 which will likely continue with the brand's warranty.
      As for the replacement costs, I believe these will come down significantly in time. Though regardless, the leasing costs themselves may be more that the car is worth (based on regular depreciation) when the battery is changed. I won't be surprised to see used VinFast cars to actually depreciate more long term as used car buyers weigh up the costs of an additional financial commitment. Used cars may be cheaper but battery leasing costs don't fall with used car prices, even if the battery is at 75%.
      Perhaps an easier option for long term owners happy with their car, would be to sell their car for a lower milage one and pay the difference, which will likely be less than eight years leasing. Though, in wealthier countries like the US, new car buyers likley won't won't to keep a car for eight plus years as they will want the new tech. Especially with all of the changes happening such as improved automation.

      If you want to sell a car to the United States, you must first win the trust of your home country, Vietnam. But, VinFast is rarely sold in Vietnam, and foreign cars such as Toyota Hyundai Kia Mazda are much more popular. Among Vinfast cars, a small car called the Fadil is popular, but this car is actually a Chevrolet Spark. Vingroup was producing smartphone and TV, but it abruptly went out of business and suddenly announced that it would no longer produce cars with internal combustion engines. It is unknown when Vingroup will again stop producing electric vehicles. Gaining the trust of the Vietnamese people is VinFast's top priority. After that, it is right to challenge the American automotive market.

    • @Infinityand1
      @Infinityand1 Год назад +17

      Yep. The moment I heard their plan is to lease the battery, I was just like, "NOPE!"
      As I see it, the problem stems from a lack of understanding of the average consumer’s motivations for purchasing an EV. By far the biggest draw of EVs is escaping the money-drain that is driving a gasoline-powered car. Recent inflation of gas prices has only served to solidify this priority in the mind of the consumer, so they will be looking for something that, outside of repairs and insurance, doesn’t have a high recurring cost associated with operation. They don’t want to replace the cost of gas-they want to eliminate it entirely. By utilizing what essentially amounts to a subscription model (especially with a base that is charged whether they are driving the car or not), the biggest benefit of owning an EV is completely negated. It doesn’t matter whether the money is going to fuel or a battery lease, the result on the consumer’s wallet is the same.
      The importance of this to the average Joe will only be further compounded by the coming economic downturn and, when money gets tight, the first thing people start looking to cut will be subscriptions. Since this company will be going to market in the middle of that downturn, car buyers will place extra priority on how the pricing is structured. This means a whole new monthly subscription is going to be a hard sell to people who are already trying to cut expenses on gas and other unnecessary expenses, especially when most other EV companies (especially major car companies that will have completed their EV pivot by this point) won’t be charging a subscription at all due to better understanding of the American consumer's psychological profile. People here are very accustomed to a certain ownership model for cars: once you own it, you own the whole thing; if you need to repair it, you can choose to bring it in and get it fixed, but you don’t have to because it’s completely your car. People won't want to cede complete ownership of their cars, especially in the midst of a recession. Seeing as most people will view battery replacement as a "repair" that that they have to subscribe to just to operate the car, they will be far more aware of the fact that they are being charged a subscription for what would usually be a one-time cost if they had bought from any other company and that they do not completely own their car regardless of whether it is paid off in full. It seems like many newer players in the EV space are approaching the vehicle market from a SAAS mindset without considering that, by the time they actually start selling cars, the consumer they will be faced will have very different priorities from that of today. I simply don’t think customers will be willing to take on an additional, inflexible subscription when there are other, non-subscription EVs available.

    Generally, an EV is totally different from an ICE car. The internal combustion engine (ICE) has many moving parts - an average 4-cylinder engine has at least 40. Imagine how many moving parts for a 6- or 8-cylinder engine (V6 or V8)! It needs oil and fuel filters changed regularly, timing chain or belt is vital and needs maintenance, poly-v belts run every auxiliary component - as you know from experience, this list goes on and on. By contrast, the electric motor mostly needs no maintenance and has only two moving parts. You don't have to pay for any smoke check, oil - filter change, timing belt change and more. Use part of this ICE maintenance money to pay for the battery leasing program like that of Vinfast because nobody or company wants to buy an EV with a battery of 5 - 6 years or older unless that EV comes with a battery leasing program, which will guarantee them a new battery replacement for free. Surprisingly, Vinfast battery leasing program offers the leasing price as low as roughly 1 buck/day (up to 3,100 miles/month) or about 3 bucks/day with unlimited miles.

Also, most of the fossil fuels we used today take roughly 150 million years to form, and we know all the natural resources won't last forever. If we use up all the resources, do we need to wait for another 150 million years? The point of using EVs is to help not only improve the environment but also reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. This is why EVs are more appealing, and Vinfast is working hard to bring its commitment to sustainability to life since Vinfast EVs are great for the environment and its affordable prices do good for our wallets.

    Rumours spread like wildfire on Vietnam’s social media channels in July 2022 that Pham Nhat Vuong, Vietnam’s richest man and chairman of Vingroup - Vietnam’s largest private conglomerate - had been subject to overseas travel restrictions. This fuelled speculation that he would soon fall victim to the Vietnamese government’s anti-corruption campaign. In recent months, authorities have prosecuted some prominent business people, including Trinh Van Quyet, founder and chairman of FLC Group, and Do Anh Dung, chairman of Tan Hoang Minh Group.These rumours seem to have led to a selloff of Vingroup shares on the stock market. On 6 July 2022, Vingroup’s share price tumbled 6.64 per cent to hit its lowest point in three years. In subsequent days, its shares were traded in the red most of the time.This is not the first time that rumours about Vuong’s legal troubles have abounded. In 2018-2019, there were similar rumours that Vuong’s passport was withheld and that he was prevented from travelling abroad. Then, the rumours seemed to arise from the investigations into Vuong’s younger brother, Pham Nhat Vu, for his involvement in a grand corruption case related to the state-owned mobile carrier Mobifone’s fraudulent acquisition of AVG, a media company of which Vu was chairman. The rumours worried investors and prompted some to seek verification. However, Vuong was not implicated in that scandal.

    You can now have a choice of buying a VinFast in a total or with a monthly subscription for the battery. Also, according to Reuters this week, VinFast has struck a dealt with the US car subscription service Autonomy to supply more than 2.500 units of VF8 and VF9. It's VinFast's largest order to date and also solidifies its foothold in the EV market. Did you know the VF8 has 11 airbags, while Tesla Model Y made in China has only 7 airbags? In addition to having the best in the business for its designs by the famous ItalDesign, VinFast is BMW based and at affordable prices with many high tech features including HUD, voice activation, face recognition, cam 360 and safety and driver assist technology such as virtual assistant, drive assist, lane-keeping assist, collision mitigation, and driver monitoring. That's not it, folks! Heated and cooled seats in cars are luxury at its finest. Yep! Affordable VF8 and VF9 Plus Models have them all.

      The US market seems saturated at first, but if you look at Europe and Australia for example, they’re smaller markets than the US but have way more variety than the US. For instance, both markets get Renault, Peugeot, Citroen, Suzuki, and Isuzu, while the US has none of those brands. In my opinion at least, those markets are way more saturated than the US, but I agree that the US auto market is still tough to get into. It would definitely apply to the European and Australian markets too.

Since then, none of them have attempted to reenter the US market, although Peugeot was coming back here but due to the Stellantis merger it was unfortunately cancelled. These brands are making much better cars than they used to, so it's crazy how they haven’t returned to the US. Speaking of brands, there are some that never had a presence in the US like Seat/Cupra and Ssangyong.

What a country to live in, where their youths are more busy worrying about politics becoming a divided nation while underperforming in school/university. I don't know guys, what I mean is if you driving along vinfast could predetermine where you are going and show you offers, which the company would get a fee from, plus if the (vindast) company offer is accepted they get a cut from POS.
      If a person gets a morning coffee, top 5 drive through coffee shops pay for advertising, then if an offer is accepted vinfast gets a cut from the offer that is accepted. Great revenue opportunities. This is why Tesla is on the ball, when and if they release a mobile phone, it will be a full circle for the 'car' company; equivalent to the items when you go to buy your groceries 'impulse goods'.
      You are in your car and it offers you the things you need from other competitors that you usually buy from at cheaper rates, or buying dinner at a discount to actually making it because it's on the way (convenience).
      The craziest thing will happen where companies will want this info and will buy out these other companies. This is where vinfast will have a huge revenue push and could offer their car services cheaper.
      America is the king of convenience, they will literally pay to do less even if it cost them more, which is great for investors.
