This movie is genius in the way it shows how much fun being a mobster is in the first half, then in the second half it shows how ugly and bloody the life can be. By seeing both the romance and disillusionment through Henry's eyes, we understand both why someone would let themselves fall into such a violent life, and why it is a horrible decision to.
One of Scorsese's best movies. It is a classic. "Casino" is another Scorsese gangster movie that starred both Pesci and De Niro. You put those two together in a movie with Scorsese directing and it is going to be great. The scene where he takes his girlfriend (soon to be wife) to the club to see Henny Youngman perform and they enter through the kitchen is a very famous scene because it was done in one long take with the camera following them. Martin Scorsese is one of the few directors who could pull that off flawlessly.
So the mob hierarchy is the boss, then the underboss, the consigliere (advisor) then down to the captains who each run a crew of soldiers. These are the official members, the "made men." Then there are the unofficial members or associates who work with them. Only associates who are of fully Sicilian or Italian heritage can get made. Paulie (real name Paul Vario) was a captain. Henry was half Irish and Jimmy was fully Irish (as far as he knew, he never knew who his father was). Tommy was fully Italian so he was the only one of the trio eligible to be made. Normally a captain wouldn't be as close to an associate like Henry as Paulie was but Henry's mother was from the same part of Sicily as Paulie's ancestors so he took a special interest in him. Paulie knew exactly what his guys were doing in the restaurants raising hell and running up huge tabs. He sent them in there on purpose to get the owners to come to him so he could bleed them dry.
PPS I never noticed it until you pointed it out, but in the sex scene with no dialogue, she's describing how she became seduced into accepting his lifestyle while she's being literally seduced.
It's interesting that you talk about how terrifying Paulie's stare is. The actor, Paul Sorvino (Mira's dad, by the way), said that he almost quit the movie right before they started shooting because he couldn't get a feel for the character. But one day he "got it" - the feel of what it would be like being a stone cold gangster who can casually order other people's murders - and then he looked at himself in the mirror...and he actually scared himself.
PS: I love it when reactors watch a movie that THEY want to see. Both of you had wanted to see this one. The guy who made the cameo as Fat Andy (at 4:11) was a retired NYPD detective named Louis Eppolito. He was convicted of multiple murders and died in prison.
7:06 I'm pretty sure that Pauli was above Tommy. Above Pauli would've been the Boss and Underboss of family he was in, which I think was the Lucchese family. Pauli said there wasn't anything he could do about it, but I think he was just blowing the guy off since Pauli wasn't going to stop Tommy. That's why the guy had to get Pauli as a partner because then Pauli would've wanted to ensure Tommy stayed in line.
17:54 It was normal for a guy in the mob to have a girlfriend as well as a wife. They just didn't talk about it with the wife ... or the girlfriend although the later usually knew about the wife.
Asking somebody like Paulie for a favor only triggers his instinct for hustling the most he can out of the transaction. In this case, a restaurant business to pillage. Otherwise, Paulie's only pretending to not be able to control Tommy. Technically, Paulie or any other "made guy" could put a lid on an associate like Tommy if it's worth their trouble and Tommy would only be signing his own death warrant if he openly defied their orders or instructions.

Not so fun fact about this movie, Fat Andy (Louis Eppolito) in the scene where they're introducing everyone was an NYPD detective. He and his partner Steve Caracappa did hits for the mob. They were caught years later when Eppolito wrote a book about his life called Mafia Cop and the mother of Jimmy Hydell one of his victims picked it up, read it, and took it to the police. Also, Anthony Casso underboss of the Lucchese Family did a news interview from jail and named both of them as cops on their payroll.

Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), Tommy DeSimone (Joe Pesci), and Jimmy Burke (Robert De Niro) were all "Associates" in gangland parlance. They were associated with a Cosa Nostra gang, but were not full fledged members. They paid tribute to a specific crew (note the cut of the Air France job that they kicked up to Paulie, even though he had nothing to do with the job), meaning that any criminal activity conducted by them, the "made guys" above them got a cut, especially if the caper was conducted on turf controlled by that crew. Paulie's turf included the airport, so he got a cut of any criminal activity conducted there. In return, they received a certain limited level of protection from other "made" wise guys, and had access to any political or judicial leverage (juice) that the gang controlled (i.e. crooked cops, fixed judges, and politicians on the take). While the made guys mostly used Tommy as muscle, breaking the occasional head, Henry and Jimmy were "earners", meaning that they mostly got involved in activities that brought money into the organization, a portion of which they kicked up to the head of the crew with whom they were associated (i.e. Paulie). Jimmy and Henry could never be "made" into full fledged members of a crew because they were not fully Italian, both were half Irish. BUT, no matter how much money an associate might make, they ALWAYS ranked below even the lowest of the "made" members. In a beef between an associate and a made wise guy, the made guy was always right, no matter the facts of the case. And, of course, an associate even so much as laying hands on a made guy, or even looking wrongly at his wife or girlfriend, was an offense punishable by death, no appeal possible.
Watching this video I learned two things about young Canadians. 1) They demonstrate a lot of common sense and 2) an equal degree of naivete about organized crime in the U.S. "Goodfellas" is a good primer for learning the "code" and understanding "the life", i.e., it's all it's cracked up to be! Fun, adventure, horror, prison, and death before being dropped off at the end of the line to the gates of Hell. Wait time: Approximately 5,000-25,000 years ... and it begins ... 🥶🔱😈
Italians are largely catholic so Peter, Paul, Maria are from the bible . Two apostles one of them the first pope (Peter) and Maria/Mary the mother of Christ.
The real-life Tommy DeSimone (Joe Pesci's character) was certainly a loose cannon. He was nicknamed 'Two Gun Tommy' and he would use random passersby for target practice. In real life, he was a 6' 2" monster who was incredibly violent. He didn't even live to be 30 and came to a really bad end, if the stories are to be believed.
On your wondering about all the Mafia guys being named Peter or Paul and all their wives being named Marie, Italians, no less Sicilians, are predominantly and rather staunchly Catholic and those names and their derivatives, Maria, come straight from that tradition. Apparently the ceremony to ‘make’ a guy, to officially elevate him as much as anything is ‘official’ in the underworld, involves the person holding a, sort of, baseball card with the image of a saint on it that have been printed and put out by the Catholic Church for centuries. The gangster invited to become ‘made,’ according to reports, sets the card on fire and, while holding it as it burns, swears to uphold the code of ‘Omertà,’ meaning ‘silence,’ that the Robert De Niro character mentions when the young Henry Hill is released after getting ‘pinched:’ “Don’t rat on your friends, keep your mouth shut.”

One of the names mentioned during that sweep through the club was Mikey Franzese. If you like mob/mafia stuff, check out his youtube channel. Michael Franzese. He tells all about his time in the "life" and when HE got made, and he even rates the realism in various gangster movies, including this one.
"Never rat on your friends, and always keep your mouth shut." Then spends the rest of his life repeating his life story for anyone who would pay to hear it.
I imagine the last 30 years of his life he was wishing he would've slept with the fishes long ago. Nicholas Pileggi did a great job on the book "Wiseguys" which is what this movie was adapted from. The gangster invited to become ‘made,’ according to reports, sets the card on fire and, while holding it as it burns, swears to uphold the code of ‘Omertà,’ meaning ‘silence,’ that the Robert De Niro character mentions when the young Henry Hill is released after getting ‘pinched:’ “Don’t rat on your friends, keep your mouth shut.”
found a new fun channel to follow thanks!
Paulie is the boss, no one higher in his crew.
hi, I recommend watching Copland. great movie big cast.
I like they skipped the tipping parts
Made guy = actual Mafia
Hello beautiful people... The Crow(1994)... Another good option to react to...
I like how one of your Patron's name is Ben Cuckface lol.
I love this movie
Tommy's mother is martin scorcese's mother.
My mother when she died.."God Rest Her Soul"...left them knives with us...and I went on a killing spree but thats another story...lol..anyway....Hispanics have large knives to cook...just so you know..and maybe to cut a throat or two :P...
MAIN GUY MEANS THERE PART OF THE FAMILY AND THEY CANT BE TOUCH
I'd love to see your reaction to "Married to the Mob". It's a dark comedy, of sorts, starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Alec Baldwin.
Course you know this is the true story of Henry Hill.
He actually had a good father figure at home he dudnt get best for nothin .. and how can u compete with wiseguys that give him everything whithout doing anything
2:28 that describes about 80% of us Italian men lol
No. Paulie was the boss. It wasn't that he couldn't do anything but Tommy was useful but unfortunately he was a loose cannon. Paulie wasn't gonna whack a guy that made him lots of money
herney was not close to paul vario he was closed to jimmy burke .... paul vario was one of the bosses
I was going to stop watching after the ridiculousness of "Why does that old lady have such a big knife", but I came to far in the video to stop. Plus I wanted to see if he says anything as stop of the knife thing.
dont you have Italians in Canada ? you dont seem to no much about Italian culture.
Paulie is a capo he’s a boss not the same rank as Joe pesce not even close I’m not sure how you missed that from the beginning of the movie
George, lets be mobsters lol
You insulted him a little bit…..a little bit.
Feds. Federal Agents.
One of the names mentioned during that sweep through the club was Mikey Franzese. If you like mob/mafia stuff, check out his youtube channel. Michael Franzese. He tells all about his time in the "life" and when HE got made, and he even rates the realism in various gangster movies, including this one.
1:12 the real story o that was simone (joe pesci) just stabbed him like 30-40 times
Did another book called gangsters and Goodfellas which was great as well. I have no props for Henry Hill
There is no honour in protecting killers
@@TheJoshestWhite bullshit, he is free while the other died in prison. Why the fuck he need to care about them? Lol, no honor among thief.
Point?
"...nar issz therr honour inn protecchtinh mohels."
The beauty of the " how am i funny" scene is in Britain they did one of those 100 scariest scenes and 100 funniest scenes tv programmes, it's a format that was rampant worldwide in the early 00's as a good way of getting nostalgia viewers but the only scene that actually made both programmes was this scene. A unique accomplishment
If you were from an Italian Catholic family, it would be common to have a name after a saint such as Paul, Peter, Marie/Maria, etc.
Actual mob members made cameo appearances in the movie, like when Henry is talking about some guys while walking through the club.
"Why does an old lady have such a big knife?" Bro, have you SEEN an Asian mother? I feel like you might have one. Mine used hers to attack fish heads in Slavic squat.
Simone made me laugh after the Jimmy Two Times line, she says "I'm gonna start doing that, start doing that" :D Fantastic reaction and fantastic edit (and I'm SO sorry, George, that this movie is a pain to edit.....but my gosh, this reaction is well worth it!) ; this is the second reaction where I'm going to watch TWICE, so you get two views from me! With a movie like this, I want to see both of your reactions so rather than rewind every scene twice, I just watch the reaction twice and focus on one of you, then the other! LOVE your channel, and I LOVE this reaction! I also love Simone's Floyd shirt! :D This movie is a masterpiece, ain't it? You get a full meal on this one! I came out of the theater after seeing it for the first time and I said "Now THAT'S a movie!" :D See you on Part 2!!!!!
One of the best movie soundtracks ever!
Lmao "That's only when you fail at the Job"
Great reaction so far. Love this movie! Would love to see you guys do Donnie Brasco also. Al Pacino, Johnny Depp, great gangster movie that NO ONE has reacted to!
Henry actually tried more than 2 times to escape from the mob but after that Billy Bats case he knew if he tried again he'd be dead..and Paulie was sleeping with Henry's wife also at around 4:19 he mentions a name Michael Franzese that guy is a real life Mobster and now has a successful RUclips channel lol.
Not jimmy it was Henry.
@@lendawgs4167 thanks :)
15:01 "Okay, okay... just some fisticuffs."
CineBinge React didn't expect the "De Niro Shuffle."
