This is my favourite song of all time! I was sitting here working on a dungeons and dragons game with a pirate theme, i have even named the ship "The Mountain Thyme", and i thought to myself: I wonder if there's a version of this song with a friendly pirate feel. Lo and behold, here you are! Thank you John :D
This is lovely - very nicely done - great sound from your mando. This song always takes me back to the mid 1960s when I was a regular floor singer in my local folk club - on nights with no guest it was the tradition for all the local singers to crowd together upfront at the end and bellow this one out - seems a very long time ago now!
Nicely played. A tune that brings back glad memories of the 70's. You were lucky to pick up he mandolin on embay. Orders from Fylde give a lead time of about six months. I have one and it was worth waiting for
Thanks, Chris…one of the songs that stands the test of time. I agree that I struck lucky getting the Fylde mandolin on eBay…beautifully crafted instrument…glad to hear you are pleased with yours.
Those Touchstones have just the most lovely tone... congratulations on the new member of the fold. Bet you'll rarely set it down from this point onwards.
Beautifully played! can anyone tell me what the backing chords are as I can now play the mandolin part but know nothing of music theory, can anyone help? Thanks!
Thanks for your kind comments…glad you enjoyed the tune/playing. I’ll look back over stuff during the next couple of days and see if I can give you some info re the chords I used for the guitar accompaniment (I currently have a splint on my middle finger left hand to help heal a snapped tendon at the end of my finger…so very restricted mandolin and guitar playing at the moment, which will delay me a little!).
Do you find that drinking lots of coffee helps with the tremolo John? I knew that the McPeake Family had played this song, but had always assumed it was an old folk song.
It depends on the time of day I’m playing/recording 😃. Coffee may help mid morning…red wine, in operation, can assist in the evening. Thanks for listening and commenting.
@phjimy.....it's an auld scots sang(braes o balquidder by robert tanahill) . mcpeake himself said he was in scotland and heard the braes o balquidder and took it back to ireland and adapted it in the 50s. look up.....the braes o balquidder by the kells on you tube.......an argentinian band which does a grand version of the braes o balquidder.....even singing it in a scots accent. many scots sangs made their way to ireland(especially in the 60s).

The Picato are the strings the luthier puts on the mando when made… I have since had, and currently have, a set of D’Addario mando strings on, the EJ74, which seem to produce as good a sound/tone… www.stringsdirect.co.uk/strings-c1/string-sets-c865/mandolin-c41/daddario-ej74-mandolin-strings-phosphor-bronze-wound-loop-end-11-40-medium-p3735?currency=GBP&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIzvnv_N75-wIVmpntCh3TUwbbEAQYASABEgIWdvD_BwE#fo_c=1949&fo_k=1214fb49a6032a90ca1f270c8ce8559e&fo_s=gplauk&

Hi, I can’t recall exactly what I referred to at the time I learned the tune. However, the tabs provided at the bottom of the list of those on thesession - thesession.org/tunes/10655 - may be of use.
