This video is about the day I was transferred from county jail to state prison at Lowell Correctional Institution in 2005. There are certain details I don't remember, but if YOUR first day in prison was at Lowell CI and you have experiences to share, please do so!

Im 61 years old and i never fit in socially. Im very fortunate that i just dealt with my anxiety and awkwardness without turning to substance.
I was a maint man at GCF for 5 yrs and had 4 different girls on my work crew at any one time. I taught them a lot (elect plumbing ect) and we had lots of fun (nothing inappropriate). I watched all officers and the way they acted. I told "my girls" many times that I have more respect for yall than I have for a few of the officers there.
I am a retired State corrections officer. I spent 24 years in active service. I dealt with thousands of male inmates. They ranged from hilarious to complete psycho paths. Every inmate was different in some way. I think that about 80% just wanted to serve their time and leave. Those individuals never got noticed because they simply didn’t stand out.
I have no idea what you’re talking about with me “ inmates are garbage “ but I didn’t work in Florida. There would be many reasons not to do that. Some inmates are habitual liars and others never lie. If the first inmate came to you and said “ My mother died , I need to call home”. It’s not his day to use the phone, what would you do ? I don’t want him to suffer but he has lied before. This actually happened to me and I called a supervisor to confirm about weather his mother had died. She was very much alive and he lied... again. He missed the phone for the rest of the week for that stupidity. I had several inmates threaten suicide. I don’t think most knew what that meant. He was going to a cell by himself with absolutely nothing in that cell( I really mean NOTHING) with someone staring at him 24/7. That would be for a minimum of 48 hours until the psychiatrist cleared him.
It’s really easy to get burned out working in a place like that. I did a really good job of not letting problem child inmates or sometimes even worse my co workers get to me. I heard of a few cases of ‘ unnecessary uses of force’ being used but that defeats the purpose. I always would just remember individuals. When that person asked me a for something special; I’d start thinking about him and if he is the the one who always goes to where he is supposed to be when he is supposed to there without a problem then I’m much more open to discussing it. I was the same way with co workers. I had many co workers who really pissed me off and then years later needed help and I’m not there for them.
I’m a much different person now than when I started. Inmates have a lot to do with it but aren’t completely responsible.
Different jurisdictions have different training and apparently from what you said Florida is significantly different from my state. I’m not saying that my state is paradise because prison is a horror that never ends but if a CO starts to have mental health issues usually seem to go somewhere else a bit less stressful or a different prison. These sound like the CO’s that you’re talking about. Someone like that would be talking with a professional and they probably will be real soon.
I was accused several times of violating inmates rights but none of these accusations ever held for a reason. I didn’t do anything wrong. I was even accused one time by a female co worker of looking at her with ‘lustful eyes’ ( yes I’m serious).. That was ludicrous. She thought that she was hot but she wasn’t. She thought that everyone wanted her. I didn’t even think about her.
I’m given many reasons of why someone can develop a negative attitude and I hope you understand that everyone is human. Some of us behave like humans and others are behave like children who really need a pacifier and that doesn’t matter which uniform that person is wearing.
Having just found your channel and this video seeing you were in Lowell I have a pen pal inside Lowell doing life who's told me sooooo many stories about her first getting in there and how things are inside during this lockdown. I'm always in shock at what she tells me. I'm glad you got out and are happy and can enjoy free life!!

Your total honesty at not remembering all the details regarding your incarceration and past due to drugs, trauma etc is refreshing. So many you tubers and podcasts don't have give that sense of realism when telling their story.

Hey to answer your question, as a correctional officer who has gone through all the training, we are always told to be firm, fair and consistent. That we are not the inmates friends nor are they are friends. Consistency is the key. I have done intake many times. And I do tend to be hard on the new inmates mainly cause I don't want them to like it and I don't want them to want to come back. With that said, I would never degrade an inmate. I always treat them with respect. With strip searches, it was very uncomfortable for me to at first, but I got used to it but I always know that it can be a very stressful situation and there is no need for the officers to make it worse. But that is me. I know there are officers out there that want to dehumanize the inmates or want to bully them and I think thats wrong. We are all not like that. I will admit that I am a hardass. Most inmates will not like me but they do respect me cause I'm consistent and fair and they know that my main goal is to secure them yes but to keep them safe. I hope that can sort of answer your question from an officers perspective. Feel free to ask me anything you'd like!

Officer Trouble I’m so glad you chimed in here! In my experience there’s definitely a difference between dehumanizing and correcting. It sounds like (especially from what you’ve shared before!) that you don’t go out of your way to make them feel like garbage, even if you are hard on them. That stands out, for sure! ❤️

I was a corrections officer in a big city jail that housed male non felons in one wing and all females in there for anything in another wing. These were separated by by the booking area, the property room, and medical area. I usually worked the property room which opened directly into the female booking area. So when a fight broke out and it often did, I was one of the first on the scene. And let tell you breaking up a fight between 2 or more girls is not for the faint of heart. You probably will get injured in some way. I did 9 years there.
I’m headed to Tallahassee FCI next month and I suffer a lot of what u mentioned & im terrified I’ve been in a mental prison for 3 years already waiting trial😢😢

Came here from Yuri or Christinas channel. And feel the same watching this. The differences in UK & US is so different. Always knew US was harsher prison/sentences. But nvr had 2 deal with sum of that. That's tot screwed up. One example is strip searches, done here, are in a private room. But everythin from transport 2 officers is different, has a more military feel listening 2 this & we experience. I know 4 sure if I'd done in the states wot I'd done here, yrs ago. My ass would def still be sitting in prison. Crazy thinkin that way.

I worked as a CO in a level 5 male institution for almost six years after leaving the mitary. I left it behind because of the politics and the inconsistencies involved with that job. I had gone from gang banger hell hole dorm to confinement over a five year span. A lucky break got me three shifts in medical. I loved it. The medical staff were great co workers who only annoyed me a little with constant compliments. I never knew what was going to walk in during the shift. I was back to confinement after that. The assistant warden the captain pulled me aside after a week and informed me that all of the medical staff requested that I be assigned there. Supposedly I was the only one who didn't hide in the office, watch movies on the computer, or take naps through the shift. I had it for a few months and really enjoyed the job. Of course a 27 year POS threw a tantrum about me being given the post when he had seniority. I went back to confinement and he watched a movie in the office while one of our nurses got the crap beat out of her. As a result he kept the assignment permanently and most of our experienced nightshift medical staff resigned. If that entitled punk had been enlisted he would have faced a court marshal and time in a federal pen.
Were we trained in the academy to be hard on inmates? Not really. In most cases New officers are thrown into the worst dorms and left there all by themselves by supervisors who only see the inside of the dorm for count. The brand new officers are screamed at, threatened, and harassed seven ways from Sunday until they get mean enough to make it stop. By the time they go to the academy they already want to want to douse most of the inmates with gasoline and light them up. New graduates are highly likely to get banger hell holes or confinement. They'll average anywhere between 3 to 5 years in those assignments without a break. It definitely changes ones personality drastically.
Medical was a whole new world for me because it wasn't necessary to to be extra aggressive in that setting. Firm but fair worked 99.9% of the time.
Overall I think most officers treat the inmates similar to the way the inmates treat them.

I have heard that womens prisons are hell for male officers. Supposedly the female inmates are extra aggressive about establishing a relationship with male staff. I was told by female officers that the honest male staff who write them up for it get falsely accused of all kinds of horrific crimes until they quit. Based on everything I was told about womens prisons I glad I never worked in one.

Prison is bad enough and I know this might sound silly, but I would freak out even more if I had to use an ID badge all the time, idk, it's almost as if they do this on purpose to make you feel even more dehumanizing. I wouldn't be able to forget that I was wearing a gigant card and that metal holder brushing on my uniform/skin, yikes!
I remember getting to Chowchilla in CA and being on the bus and the huge gate opening and shutting behind us. Horrible experience.

Most of the rest of my time was spent in a minimum security prison. Same in some ways but also pretty different lol!
Was on the annex for 7 yrs and I don't believe in warehousing of human beings for the sake of politics
Well when i first got to Lowell Annex in intake the first thing they made me do was take my hair lose because we was not allowed to wear braided mohawks and i instantly thought i was being singled out. I stayed on the annex was placed in poppa dorm witch was the most ghetto dorm on that compound . I stay to myself but eventually made a couple friends.The rules was strict but basically if you mind your on business you stay out of trouble.
The Annex has AC though! All of us on the main were jealous 😂
What was solitary confinement like?
I’m going to the women’s reception holding unit on Friday supposedly I’m so nervous my first time going into prison been in county numbers of times though
They would say ladies when addressing us but other times Sgt. Vogen would wake us up saying good morning fuckers. And Tango dorm was the deathrow I mates or solitary confinement. Oh...I just remembered, when the guards would walk a deathrow inmate to another part of the jail and you were outside, it was mandatory that you had to turn ur back on them, it is literally a living death. You would see them in the window sometimes and it's so horrible the anguish and hopelessness in there eyes. There was a girl in that dorm that was in solitary confinement and she apparently had beef with Sqt. Q so he withheld her medication and her blankets etc and she wrote home saying that he was killing her n that she was going to die. She was found dead in her cell due to exposure not long after.
First day everyone is trying to figure out how much time they’re gonna end up doing. Work credit etc. Everyone thinks they’re a novice attorney. Girls that are new asking frequent fliers legal advice Is what the topic of most conversations
I just wonder why they think putting someone who is a harm to themselves in solitary confinement is effective.

Yes! But not every time. I don’t remember why or why not, but I remember having them at times and not at others.

With no dang AC!! I never understood why they had the pregnancy dorm on the main and not Annex! Ugh it made me so mad. P.S. I was 16 years old so I was in C dorm right next door and not pregnant so I can’t imagine what you went through but just know us ladies in C dorm prayed for y’all.

Crazy how different the UK & US systems are. I know ours is wayyyy less harsh lol. But wot really surprised me is that there seems 2b nothin given 4 withdrawal over there wen arrested. Over here (if on a prescription), u get ur prescription (usually), within 24 hrs. And u can get it if u get taken 2 prison, within a cpl of days & it's faxed thru. They'll try 2 bring u rite down, or give ppl the min if they've no prescription. But ya don't get left with nothin. There also seems 2b a lotttt more real bad Officers compared 2 here. They're not the great here, at times but nothin like I've seen on these vids. Yup the strip search is deffo leave ur dignity at the door. We don't have 2 do the cough part, but that's it. And lot more privacy as well will add, toilets / showers. 2 sum it up, there's so much that's similar, but loads that's different as well. The solitary over there, OMG I'd crack up! The only comparison I can think off is the police cells waiting 2 go 2 court 4 Sri 24 hrs - 4/5 days max. And death row that's sum crazy shit. Wot seems 2b universal theme is addiction /abuse that prison is 1, not gonna sort. And 2, cost way more wen it's a repetitive experience whether it's prison or just constant arrests/probation wot eva, is way more expensive than proper treatment 2 start with!

The more we hear about the US penal system, the more we are shocked by it's savagery. There seems to be a mission from the outset to dehumanise and degrade the wretched people it processes
The greatest criticism is that it simply doesn't work. It doesn't deter, and notable cases such as this excepted, it doesn't rehabilitate. The country with the highest number of inmates in the so called civilised world also has the highest crime.
its much worse in other countries. You don't want to get arrested in some places like Iran, Mexico or Russia.
FYI, yes during orientation they do have manipulation classes.
Re correctional officers. I can only comment on here in Australia. As an older youth offender myself many many years ago, my opinion .... I was very manipulative shit back then so I can see why they would focus the training on controlled emotional involvement and told to treat all offenders the same. Looking back with what I know now and how much I changed for the better. My thinking is most of the Police and CO I encountered were just doing their job, some kinder than others. Its a job for them like any other job I guess
I think what you described in your feelings is a direct reflection of what you put your victim(s) through. I’m sure a victim being robbed, physically controlled by a thug with a weapon, being seen as garbage by a perpetrator, etc makes the victim feel all the things you felt: dehumanized, afraid, humiliated etc. The victims of criminals were surely screamed at, bossed around, etc. SO, it was 100% appropriate to be served what you dished out to your victims. 🤷🏼♀️
I have never robbed anyone, held anyone up with a gun, been in a physical fight. I did, however, sell drugs. And that in itself is a form of dehumanizing. Not caring about the person enough to protect them. I understand that what I did was a crime, and that there were logical consequences for my action. And yet, I still fully believe my experience of being dehumanized and humiliated was not necessary of top of the natural consequence of prison that I was given. 💚
@@Theslowandsteadyhomestead I think you missed the point. Which is, you reap what you sow. Anyone who volunteers to do what is illegal has no right to complain when they experience the consequences of their choice. Three meals a day, a bed to sleep in, a free education. I had to pay for my education and I was a law abiding citizen. I hear a lot of complains from current and former inmates, when society should be hearing THANK YOU.
A lot of things in life are unnecessary, but they happen. I’m sure the parents of whoever you sold drugs to would have a different perspective.
Bottom line is this: “Everything happens for a reason. And that reason is usually something stupid you did.”
I hope you learned and grew from your experience, and that, like Christina Randall, you changed your ways.

I was top bunked with a jumpsuit way too large. The alarm went off for count.. I was startled awake in a jumpsuit 3 times larger than I and I was tangled up. I used the sleeves as pillows and all... I reiterate this as I was 90 lbs in a 3x... I got tangled up. I fell. My head hit the cement. It happened so fast I wasn't able to throw my hands out to catch myself.. Fellow inmates said my head hitting the cement sounded like a large text book slamming to the ground. I was unconscious for a while. I had a skull fracture, multiple hematomas, a sprained neck.. a severely bruised kneecap. This was literally 30 days in. I was so new... As I healed, my neck turned green from bruising ALL THE WAY TO MY KNEE?!?!?!? I was taken out the block in a wheelchair. I came back with a neck brace and all... At the hospital they cuffed me to a bed.... Back in the block I was given medication. Tramadol for pain. Thank God it wasn't worse.
Sometimes my head still hurts in the spot I cracked it on.

I never personally experienced or saw that, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it still happens! A lot of “animal” treatment happens in prisons.

Is it true you can get in trouble for masturbating. We know its a natural normal and healthy thing to do. Everybody does it even though none of us can ever dare ourselves to be honest enough to admit it. Anyways, if so, why would you get in trouble if its just you not bothering anybody. I would think masturbating is as private as using your own toilet in your cell.
