It's still sitting on the shelf... but I will come round to reading it! Persuasive presentation, Philip!
Thanks, Johan! LPQ is calling, and I predict you will enjoy this one once you get immersed in it.
My biggest takeaway from the thumbnail is that Philip would look great in scale armor.
Ha ha! I was born to wear scale armor (and tweed, of course). It's a bit uncomfortable to sleep in, though.
I'm so glad you loved this series! I constantly think about rereading it and it is so easy to spend hours and hours at a time thinking and discussing the series! It remains the only series I've done discussion videos on with Grace Dionne and there's a reason for it! 💚
This is indeed a series that is rich enough to reward a reread, and I suspect a rereader would catch a lot of foreshadowing since it’s a well planned series. Cheers, Ben!
Why I Will Read the Long Price Quartet; this video!
Thanks, Ibi! If you do pick it up, I hope you'll love it!
my hats off to you Philip on such a great review. you managed to summarize all the amazing pros of the series that I couldn't articulate in such a beautiful manner. i am currently reading the last book and am a bit scared to reach the crying part. no matter the ending the journey was such a thoughtful and intriguing one that i have thoroughly enjoyed. than you for such an awesome video
Thank you for the kind words, Avi! I'm happy that you've found LPQ so impactful as well. My best wishes to you for the finish!
Fantastic review that has made want to dive straight in! Sounds like a series that provokes a lot of thought, and definitely sounds unique. What a pitch! You have convinced me :).
Will
I think you and Ed would find a lot to love in this series, Will. Plus, Abraham can really write. Now, back to The Hunger of the Gods for me! 😀
An absolute masterpiece!!!
Amen to that, Andrew!
Beautifully said as usual!! I love this series so so much!! It's perfection!
It's an incredible series, Penny, and I'm so glad I read it!
So many books-so little time. Even though now is not a good time for me to be reading something that could make the stoic Dr Fantasy shed a tear, your review was so good that I’m oh so tempted.
I have a funny feeling this is a series that will work well for you, Terry. If you do give it a try, I'd love to hear your thoughts!
I’ve got a *few* books to read first, but we’ll see how it goes. Thanks Philip.
Philip because of your descriptive review. I will be picking up Abraham books. Can not wait to read his books. Thanks again for covering another well written author.
My pleasure, Tony, and I hope you'll enjoy Abraham's writing!
You know what? I might enjoy The Long Price Quartet.😁 Wonderful hearing your beautiful reading experience and Abraham’s masterful work on character relationships, culture, worldbuilding, and themes! I enjoyed Leviathan Wakes, and I’m kind of surprised this is the same author (one of them) because this sounds like a vastly different reading experience-in a good way! I don’t think anyone would complain if you did another updated Top 10 Fantasy video or just made it an annual thing!
Ha ha! Have I mentioned that I think you'll enjoy this series, Johanna? Top Ten videos get a lot of clicks, but they're a pain in the butt in some ways, beginning with deciding what to squeeze in there. Cheers!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy I have noticed top 10 videos getting tons of views on other people's channels! I haven't done one because I'm terrible at committing to an order and feeling the need to over-explain my reasoning. I love your two though, and I'm pretty hopeful LPQ will make my own list when I get to reading it!
Hi 👋 thank you for the review! I might check it out!! Happy reading to you!! 🌸🎥
If you do pick up LPQ, I hope you'll enjoy the series, Safina!
When you recommend books my TBR and book wishlist increases! I love it!
And I wish you much fulfillment from those reads, my friend!
Nicely done! Sounds like an excellent work of literature. I am strongly considering reading the series.
I hope you'll give it a try!
This series sounds incredible. I’m definitely going to try it based on your reviews of it. Thanks!
I really hope you'll enjoy it, Dave!
Another great video, Philip! Okay. You’ve convinced me. Yet another series to add to the TBR pile. 😅
I hope you’ll enjoy it, Branej!
I've been meaning to get to this series for a while, so thanks for making this video. I think it's time to take the plunge!
I hope you’ll love it, Jon!
I did start the first book of the series awhile ago but struggled with it. However, once again, hearing your view point, I’ll will definitely pick it up again. So thank you for this video👍🏼
It's definitely a slow burn, but it quietly gathers power as you read through the books. At least, I hope you'll find that to be the case, Ernst!
I am in the same boat. I’ve read the first 2 books and I’m still not sure I like it much.
Cheers, Philip! This sounds like something I’d definitely enjoy! Now, to reconfigure my tbr…
Part of the "fun" of having a TBR is reconfiguring it, right? My best to you, Joshua!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy it is a negotiation I always seem to lose! Take care, Philip!
That's awesome that this author delivers such good character work. I'm going to put this one on my radar.
If you do give it a try, I hope you'll love it!
I can’t wait to discuss the price of spring!
I'm very excited for our final LPQ chat! In the meantime, you've got even more exciting things going on!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy yes sir!!! Time table is moving up so next week is what it’s
Looking like :)
@@AndrewsWizardlyReads My very best wishes for it!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy Thank you!!!
I loved hearing your spoiler-free thoughts on this inredible series! I honestly don't have anything to add, you said it all perfectly. The characters and their complex relationships were definitely the thing that I loved most about this series. And of course the unique magic system, that was just so cool and intriguing to read about.
I have feeling that I will revisit this series regularly in the future, because it is just such a rich, deep and beautiful story. There's probably something new that you can take away from it on every read.
Really happy to hear that you enjoyed this series so much. And I can't wait for the spoiler discussion!! :)
Well said, Esmay -- this is indeed a series that will reward a reread, I strongly suspect. I'm glad to be in your excellent company when it comes to finding this series so enriching.
I’m convinced! I will be starting this in 2023 😃
Fantastic! 2023 will here before we know it, and I hope it will be an excellent reading year for you, Juan!
You sold me on this series. (And not just because you said he compares favorably to Robin Hobb!). Thanks for the video!
Excellent! A Hobb comparison is a high honor in my book, and I know in yours too!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy for sure! I always appreciate how you break down what makes these books "tick" (for lack of a better word), as for me as a reader, those elements are what make a book compelling or not: character, theme, prose, etc. Thanks as always for your analysis!
@@RedFuryBooks My pleasure, and thank you for watching!
Really enjoyed the video - thank you. I officially added it to my tbr
I hope you’ll get a lot out of LPQ when you read it, Scott. It’s a fabulous series, in my opinion, and different from anything else I’ve read.
Such a great review of the series! You had me interested back in the first review with Shadow in Summer, even with the forewarning of being a slow-burn. As a King fan (and same applies to other faves as well) I can hang with a slow, progressive opening to build in some great character work. I plan on getting into this series rather soon, and I would like to have read at least the first book by the time of your discussion in June
Excellent! I’d love to hear your thoughts on A Shadow in Summer when you get to it, Anthony!
Well you convinced me gonna give this one a shot thanks sir
Awesome! I hope you'll enjoy it, Chaz!
Wonderful review Phillip! His writing and character work are what interest me the most. I am very excited to read LPQ. If Daniel Abraham is close to Hobb then he definitely sounds like an author I will enjoy
Hello, Drew! If you give LPQ a shot, I hope you’ll get a lot out of it. It’s a series I’ll be thinking about for a long time.
I’m reading a series that I’m enjoying, but I’m feeling such a strong pull to LPQ that I’m starting it immediately and coming back to the one I’m reading after.
Sometimes u gotta go with ur gut
My best to you for your reading!
I was already sold, but now I'm even more sold.
I put the Hobb comparison in there for you, Jake! 😁
Approaching the end Price of Spring. I’ve read two of Abraham’s series. He is 2/2 for banger fantasy series!
I'll be reading more of his series someday too. Best wishes with the finale!
I finished this less than a minute ago. This series is incredible.
@@Cadam_ Ah, then, you know. What a powerful ending!
The last few pages of the epilogue made me tear up more than any other book.
@@Cadam_ Yep. That’s what got me too.
I'm currently trying out The Dragons Path by Daniel Abraham and it's great so far! I loved The Expanse series and I knew his own novels wouldn't be exactly like that. Yet, he delivers compelling characters and has a plot that has me wanting to know more. I hope to start Long Price Quartet in the summer.
I'll be trying Abraham's other series eventually, for sure. LPQ has deeply impressed me.
A slow, emotional story, with consistent characterization, intriguing themes and prose comparable to Hobb?? 😲 Sounds like my kinda book! Thanks Phillip, will def check these out. 😃
I predict you’ll enjoy LPQ, Crystal!
Wonderful review, Philip. I, too, have discovered in LPG a new favorite, a superb reading experience that I keep thinking on a few weeks later, because the themes and characters were so compelling. The Price of Spring is the perfect culmination of the entire series.
Now, I know you're considering to read it, so I have to warn you... Allen is already at two for (bloody fantastic) two, for me, since I just finished The Folding Knife, by K.J. Parker, and was floored by this one. What. A. Book. What a sensational character! So, prepare yourself, for I'm guessing Allen is slowly taking over with his astute recommendations, serving his plot to rise from Long Price Prophet to Booktube Overlord
If anyone would plot to become BookTube overlord, it would be Allen for sure. All that talk about revolution is just a façade. But I must admit he’s scarily right on target with his recommendations, making me think he’s been plotting this takeover for a long time.
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy He must have, yes. And now I wonder if he's not giving us a few hints about it : LPQ's superbly crafted foreshadowing, The Folding Knife's mastermind-like character... I wonder what clues I'll find in The Books of Babel, now that he got me highly interested in them.
Haha.
@@C.S.Brulevent We shall see since it’s inevitable that we’ll be reading those books and doing the overlord’s bidding!
If I can ever finish Dust of Dreams, my next read will be Betrayal in Winter. I really can't wait to read more in this series. I really enjoyed the first book. The thought of my favorite characters being 15 years older is a little strange but I'm sure I'll love it.
It's really amazing how Abraham captures a life in these four books. The way the characters age feels so natural and right as they go through the various life stages. My best to you for your reading, Camanda!
It's not like an awkward time jump in the middle of a book. In a way, you can think of it as more like major chapters in someone's life.
This is on my short list for sure! Currently I am reading The Folding Knife and The shadow of the Torturer. Both incredible! The Folding Knife may be my favorite book I've ever read (I have about 100 pages left). I think I'll be reading the prince of nothing or the long price quartet next. I haven't quite decided.
It sounds to me like you can’t lose, Dylan! The Folding Knife is by KJ Parker/Tom Holt, right? I’ll be trying Prince of Nothing this summer.
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy Yes, it's by KJ Parker. It is so incredibly crafted! The writing is intricate, but nonchalant at the same time. It's incredibly fascinating! The intrigue and political maneuvering is absolutely next level! Talking about starting wars to make money and winning wars by cutting off supply lines. All genius
@@Dylan13Collins Sounds awesome! Thanks!
I'm really glad you enjoyed these books as much as I have. I found them to be, what is the word? Unexpected? Thoroughly enjoyed how the author tied it all together at the end, big decisions and seemingly small decision that occur in one's life and how those all go into making the person decades down the road. How those decisions (big and small) affect different generations. You are correct, these characters turn into fully fleshed people to the reader and their decisions are typically very "reasonable" even as the reader doesn't agree with the that reason.
I am also a huge fan of Robin Hobb as well.
That's an excellent observation about the impact of decisions, small and large, down the road. Abraham does such an amazing job with that, making me believe he planned the series very well. I really do feel that LPQ will resonate with most Hobb fans.
A series unlike any other I've come across. So much naunce, emotionality, and rich character work done with a deft and mature hand. Its been the better part of a year since i finished the series and i still think of Otah and Maati quite often.
Beautifully said! There is indeed much nuance and emotion in this series, which has some of the most three-dimensional characters I've come across in fantasy.
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy I know he's found great success alongside Ty Franc under the penname James S.A Corey with The Expanse series which is wonderful but it saddens me he is so continuously overlooked as a Fantasy author.
He's also written Urban Fantasy under the penname M.L.N Hanover which I greatly look forward to reading.
@@thatsci-firogue I didn’t know about the urban fantasy. What an accomplished author!
I always try to recommend this any chance I get. Its very unconventional so I can see why it wouldn't be for everyone, but as far as adult fantasy with little to no action, this is some of the best.
I’ve got to agree with you there, Jorden, and I too will be recommending LPQ for the same reasons. Cheers!
This is a really good series, I re-read it a little while ago.
Definitely worthy of a reread!
Reshma can make some very fierce thumbnails. Very, very scary!
Yes! That’s an extremely intimidating figure there, isn’t it?
Should one start with long price quartet or dagger and the coin when diving into Abraham's works? Will most likely read both anyways though.
Having read only LPQ, I don’t feel qualified to give an informed answer, but because they’re entirely separate series, I don’t think you’d go wrong either way. You could ask Allen at The Library of Allenxandria since he’s read more of Abraham’s books. I hope you’ll enjoy whichever you decide to pick up!
This series officially going on my TBR. Any similarity with SOIAF?
I would not compare it to Martin’s writing, which is far more action filled. I know that Martin has been a mentor of sorts for Abraham, but The Long Price Quartet has a very different tone. There are some politics, though, and both feature strong character work (but in different ways). Definitely worth reading!
This series sounds simply incredible! I've still yet to pick up a Daniel Abraham book, but you (and Allen, naturally) have me convinced that this series is the way to go.
Allen is The Long Price Prophet, and I am but a humble disciple, but I bet you'll enjoy LPQ!
You'll love this Ryan!! Christy is reading it and loving it now!
@@Thecatladybooknook_PennyD I can't wait!!! I'm really hoping to get to this series by the second half of this year!
Daniel Abraham/James Corey is a beast so I probably should have already read this
I haven’t read Abraham’s other books, so I can’t compare them to LPQ, but I loved this series, and I hope you will too if you give it a try.
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy The Dagger and Coin series is so good that I have to assume it’s definitely better than Long Price Quarter. I think it’s my number 3 behind Malazan and first law
@@snarfbomber298 That’s a major endorsement! I’ll have to check it out. Abraham certainly earned my trust as an author with LPQ.
Oh my, great characters, magic surrounding poetry, and Asian based stuff? *adds series to TBR*
It’s a beautiful series, Marco, and one I hope you’ll enjoy!
What is your trilogy called.
Hello, Tiffiny. It's not published yet, so the title might change, but I'll be sure to announce it when it's official!
This series was sooooo good.
I agree!
