    it's a normal first attack hose. We get the water running within 20 to 30 seconds, and if we then need more water than we carry on board, then we set up the full size hose

    @Buzzby00 10 лет назад +8

    Well done chaps, BA preferable but not really required if outside in clear air.
    Mike donelly, hose reel is always default position on job like this WHILST setting in a line. Cant take the time to wait etc.
    Good attendance time, wont be any longer as Boris has closed our stations : (
    Regards all.

    This is Lower Thames St, within the City of London's prosperous financial district, only a few minutes walk front The Tower of London. The foreign people being commented on are not locals, they are tourists and stepped off the stationary tourist coach seen, which is unable to move past the burning car.

    They would have worn BA but they would rather just put the damn thing out. Besides, wind was blowing down the road and car was next to building, little risk of smoke inhalation

    Most fire services in Europe and Australia use the high pressure reel on car fires, no point bowling out 2 lengths of 38mm if it can be knocked down with the reels. I agree on the BA point though, with the risk of cancer being as high as it is in firefighters, i'd rather wear BA to a nothing job, then not wear it at a going job.

    How come they don't use foam on a fuel fire?

    • @ikarlhd1
      @ikarlhd1 10 лет назад

      Unsure.
      In NI not all tenders have foam capability, they would only have it from a fire extinguisher or an actual foam tender.
      Sometimes its not 100% needed, other times for large scale fueling fires (such as at airports) it is

    • @BobbyMulqueen
      @BobbyMulqueen 9 лет назад +2

      If there was a Petrol or Oil leak then we'd use foam, as water would just spread the fuel everywhere. Most of what is burning here is just material from the car (paint, rubber, plastic and fabrics.) In this case using only water would be adequate. Foam takes a little delay in setting up, and then the environmental agency has to be notified. Plus water is free, whereas foam concentrate costs money. It's much easier and less time consuming to douse it with water rather than mess about with foam; Although in some cases, it's necessary.

    • @hvymtal8566
      @hvymtal8566 9 лет назад

      Bobby Mulqueen
      In that case you could use a CO2 extinguisher in combination with the line, saves the trouble and cheaper than foam since CO2 extinguishers are everywhere.

    • @BobbyMulqueen
      @BobbyMulqueen 9 лет назад +3

      I suppose you could, but extinguishers aren't designed for fighting fires in that sense. It's more of a means of protection, whilst you escape a fire, or in the very early stages of preventing a fire.
      If there is nobody in the car, and you can use water from a safe distance, then that's the sensible option.
      You don't know what's inside the car, it could have cylinders in the boot, or other hazards. Why risk getting up close with an extinguisher when it's more effective and safer to wash it down the road?
      It also saves you having to restock extinguishers. If you're out on a job and you use unnessessary equipment, then you get a second shout where you need that specific gear, then you're no good to anybody.
      It's down to the assessment you make at the scene. To me, having one of your crew risk his life over a car that's already lost is bad leadership.

    • @traineespark
      @traineespark 7 лет назад

      various reasons
      foam very expensive
      doesn't remove heat
      causes an environmental hazard
      longer make-down
      doesnt be a tidy job
      foam is used for large truck bus etc on fire though

    Sorry no excuse not wearing BA, only takes a minuet to get it on and under air, what if the building had become involved and someone was trapped. Not good place to park the appliance either, what if a back tyre exploded and threw petrol into the appliance, not much use if it's on fire. Pre planning required on the OIC's part.
